  • Happy Good Friday/Easter Weekend to everybody!!!
    "King Herod's Song (Try It and See)" off of the original Jesus Christ Superstar album which came out in 1970 and featured Alan Spenner on bass.
    Mike d'Abo talks about his involvement in JCS - / watchv=xxtqptow2k0
    I'm playing the MBJ Double-Bit that was built by Joe Kruse through a SansAmp Bass Driver Ver. 2. I've got the Tone-Styler tone pot turned back a few clicks to take some of the edge off my usual tone.

    So much fun hearing and seeing this video Troy! My senior year of High School, my Drama class performed "Jesus Christ Superstar" per movie and album. I scored the part of Caiaphas, The High Priest! WOO HOO🤣 We did a show for a school assembly and the Principal said it was so good that our class should think about doing a few shows for the public. We ended up doing 6 shows over a 12 day period. One of my buddies was Herod and he absolutely stole the show with his rendition of this tune. The music was performed by students in the music department. Really was a fantastic part of my Senior Year! I really appreciate you chatting with us too between playing! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio and Happy Easter To All The TROY-DITES 👋

    Great playing, Troy! I've been in the pit orchestra on bass for several productions of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and pretty much remember Alan Spenner's part note for note for the whole score. "Heaven On Their Minds" still is my favorite tune in the show, but "Herod's Song" was always a lot of fun. I've doubled on tuba for this tune every time I've done it.

      @@TJH3113 It's always a blast to play it. I haven't found it to be a particularly demanding show, partially because there really aren't any breaks for the orchestra and the time seems to fly by, and every tune in it has something fun to play. It's not something like "Fiddler on the Roof" or the older Irving Berlin shows where you sit around waiting forever for the next cue to start, and then when it does, you're fighting to stay awake because it's mostly just quarter notes on 2 and 4. "West Side Story" is another good one - if you haven't played it already, "Cool" in that show has a fair bit going on in the bass line and was a bit of a bear to count when I first sight-read it because of all the time changes.

    • @ebierke
      @ebierke 6 місяців тому +1

      @@stevepreskitt283 @TJH3113 As I recall, "Superstar" has no breaks for dialogue. It is billed as a "rock opera", and (not that I'm into opera) as far as I know, no dialogue is true for most operas. "1776" has a half hour break in it for dialogue. I haven't played the show, however some fellow pit musicians have. Their story is they would phone in orders at the Mexican restaraunt across the steet, then during the long dialogue break someone would run across the street, pick up the food and bring it back into the pit before the next song started! "West Side Story" is another one I have yet to do. I love the music from the show, and was hooked on the Stan Kenton / Johnny Richards version of the show 35 years ago. Such wonderful music.

    The vocal performances and the rhythm section(s) of the Brown recording are the best.
    The nuns in my catholic school dropped this on us in 7th grade.
    Mike D'Abo's rendering of this song is by far the best. I detest the campy, mincing delivery of nearly every other version.
    I know the brown album was Rice & Weber's demo to get funded for the stage production. The tempo is much faster than in the stage and movie productions.

      Yeah, I guess because this was the "comic relief" song on the album, they really ran with it in the Broadway and film productions. d'Abo really does have an incredible voice. I remember how disappointed I was when I saw that almost no one from the record was in the film... except for Barry Dennen. He was born to play Pilate. I actually saw Dennis DeYoung play Pilate in the 20th (or 25th?) Anniversary tour. He was really good.

Not sure if they did it for television, but the voices were much louder than the music. And, if I remember correctly, at some points, they didn't sing so much as talk-sing.
