    I am Canadian but have travelled the US quite extensively. Some states have really surprised me by how much I love or sometimes dislike them. I think you should travel with your trailer and see which areas resonate with you.
    I LOVE sourdough! Yours looks lovely and you are right, it's much easier than people think! I don't make it as often as I would like because I just eat too much of it and as a 50 year old woman, my weight is harder to manage than when I was younger.

    You should consider Texas! I’m from the Midwest and have loved the weather here! So much hiking and nature as well. It’s definitely getting more expensive (especially in the last 2 years) but there are still some affordable areas :) I live in austin for reference.

    Hmmm...your critera for west, warm, good soil and mountainous is tricky. Have you considered parts of Texas? I spent 25 years living in New York and 12 in Colorado. While we absolutely have long and cold winters here, it is a million times more preferable than NY winters (the humidity on the east coast makes the air feel SO much colder!) plus we have tons of sun year round and the evergreens make everything gorgeous in the winter. We don't get mud at all here. I'd think if you want all of those things you mentioned on a homestead you would really need a well. I'm not sure if it's hard to get wells in California, but I imagine it would be. And of course you know... the fires and evacuations are only getting worse. The smoke is terrible. I personally would never move there even though I love it too! Good luck on your travels finding your new site.

    • @SunshineFarm

      I think Texas would be more humid, buggier, and flatter than we would ideally like, but it’s not off the table! Property taxes are pretty steep there too, which is something that we’re hoping to get less of leaving NY since it makes debt free living harder

    South Carolina sounds almost like what your are looking for. It has mild winters but still freezes from time to time (which is good for the pests), yet no snow in sight or rarely any. There is beautiful rivers and forest as well. The growing season is long, with the potential to have a spring, a summer and a fall garden and have plenty of things still grow and thrive during the winter. And I'm no expert on Californian real estate prices, but my guess would be that South Carolina is more affordable. Near Lake Marion is a beautiful place, especially up north, not far from Manchester forest. I hope you and your family find what you need, blessings.

      We’re definitely interested in checking out the Carolinas! I am a bit worried about the summers and humidity though. I would love a dryer climate!

    • @ButcherBakerQuesoMaker
      @ButcherBakerQuesoMaker 2 роки тому

      The summer in the Carolinas aren’t great with the humidity but if you get up into the mountains the humidity is less, but you will get some snow. The taxes and governmental direction in California is why we could not stay. I am from California, we lived there in 2020 but it is so different from when I lived there before. California is going to go bankrupt, burn 🔥 and run out of water. Even up in the mountains, water is an issue because all the big coastal cities siphon it away from them. It’s our conundrum, we wanted somewhere beautiful, but needed lower taxes, and more choices in our food and how we school our children. We chose coastal Maine because it’s much milder than inland but it’s still cold. But I love snow. You might want to look at coastal Oregon/Washington because it is super temperate. Ultimately it’s your decision, not anyone here on UA-cam so don’t let too many of these comments get into your head. The airstream is an awesome way to see the country and see what is out there. Maybe look at the mountains of Tennessee, no income tax, beautiful and not too humid. Being close to family is nice but we have found we have a community here due to our church and we make our own family. We put our lives on hold for so long for family and finally decided to take the plunge and move for ourselves and our family. Good luck with your research. You may not find the perfect place but you might find somewhere that ticks the most boxes.

    Dont let the soil condition in arizona or other places intimidate you , you can do the no dig method where you add ton of compost with cardboard, my soil here in south Ga is just technically sand and i been doing great with that method.

    My ideal is the Pacific NW. Western Washington and Oregon. Here in Western Washington 8b
    we can grow year round. We freeze a little bit but NEVER gets below 15. 25 to us is pretty dang cold. Also these are night temps and generally only last a night and go away for a while. Dont wanna be that cold don't go outside that specific night in the middle of the night. It legit snows here just enough for you to enjoy it for a couple days then it's gone. The outdoors is literally a part of our blood here. You can't find people anywhere in Washington that don't hike or bike or kayak or go to the beach or park. So many mountians lakes beaches and a national forest. We have great soil and lots of land. It's not as cheap as some others but it's not that much compared to California. There are many places you can find cheaper land. Without compromising on political climate too much.
    I have a ton of family in socal and it's not a problem seeing them. My best friends family is the same way. It's a short plane ride or just drive it's not that long.
    We are not sunny all the time. But we always have grass so most places don't have mud problems.

    Yep, you’d do well in Northern California. Is your family in northern or Southern California? I’m curious about your budget because as you know property anywhere in Cali is expensive, but you should definitely zero in on the foothills here in Nor Cal, like Newcastle, Auburn, Placerville, Penryn, Cool, Greenwood, Shingle Springs, Diamond Springs, Cameron Park, Caloma, and El Dorado Hills. Just in the valley, Lincoln, Granite Bay, Loomis, Orangevale, Rocklin, Folsom, and Roseville are great, but you’d have to find a large property which is a little difficult because it’s mostly neighborhoods, but they’re out there. I’m in Citrus Heights and we’re looking at all these locations currently with the same criteria as you. I would LOVE to live in Nevada City or Grass Valley but it’s too far from my husband’s work. It does snow up there, but both towns are so lovely and family friendly. There are some towns around Sacramento that have larger lots like Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, and Carmichael - they’re busier towns though and come with busy town “problems,” but they’re are closer to a crazy variety of restaurants, shopping, and events. Depends on what you want and where you work. Davis is a super cool town, has lots of jobs at the college there, farmer’s markets, fun family events, it’s safe, neat restaurants and shopping, definitely good gardening there because it’s in the valley. I’ve often thought about moving here.
    I grew up in a tiny miner’s town called Georgetown. It’s over an hour’s drive to the heart of Sacramento but there’s lots of jobs that are a little bit closer, making it a 45 min to hour commute. It does snow in the winter but melts quickly, especially if your not living higher up in Georgetown, more closer to town or lower. There’s not much to do there but you can find a large, secluded property with a house for a good price. The town of Cool is a little less out there and has amazing properties for very good prices too.
    Whew! Too much info! Lol! I’m excited for your guys!

    • @SunshineFarm
      @SunshineFarm  2 роки тому +3

      Love all this info!! I don’t want to discuss our budget on here, but would be happy to chat privately! I think we could afford land and a house in some areas but not in the more expensive parts of California. My family is in southern so we’re also looking at the greater San Diego area. We’re excited to check out the foothills in March!! Definitely fits what we’re looking for.
      Chris and I both plan to have remote jobs, Chris actually just accepted a fully remote position so that’s exciting!!
      I think the foothills seem to be the most affordable for the places we are looking. We’re also considering buying land and building since we will have the airstream to live in during a build. Lots of things to consider!!

    • @ArmindaHeart
      @ArmindaHeart 2 роки тому +1

      @@SunshineFarm yikes! To build in California, there are a million hurdles to jump through plus you’ll be taxed to death and paying fees up the you know what before you even stick a shovel in the dirt. It would be more cost effective to either buy an existing home on land or buy land thats hooked up for amenities and put down a manufactured home. You’ll already be paying a buttload for insurance (especially if you’re living anywhere near nature that could go up in flames) and taxes as it is. Not to be a Debbie Downer. It’s all these things home buyers/builders moan about over here 😂 It was way easier to build about 20 years ago. Now it’s quite the feat and takes deep pockets and YEARS of patience 😬

    Are you using your own starter or do you use yeast in your bread. I assume it’s starter since you say it’s sourdough. I tried for months to get a strong starter and it was always so weak and I never could get my bread to really rise very much. North Carolina is beautiful it’s sunny even in the winter even when it occasionally snows. I would move there in a heartbeat the land is rich and fertile.

    • @SunshineFarm
      @SunshineFarm  2 роки тому +1

      I’m using a starter! It’s been going really well. I’ve even dehydrated it and sent it to family and friends so they can have some as well and it worked great.
      I did have one experience in the past where it did not work well, but this time has been much better.

      @@SunshineFarm well that does it. Now I’m determined to try again. I’ve got to get this darn starter stronger. I’m going to start with a fresh starter. One last question if you have the time. Hello! I live in Western North Carolina outside of Asheville. I actually moved here a few years ago after going to school in LA to be a plant-based homesteader! There's a lot we have that's on your list, with the exception of a couple things. We have mountains and tons of national forest/protected land to explore with many waterfalls and rivers. We certainly do have all 4 seasons, but the winters are mild with almost no days below freezing (only nights) and a few days/nights that we get a few inches of snow that melts fairly quickly. Being at higher elevation our summers don't get that hot, I don't think we got over 90 last year. Asheville has an incredible and growing permaculture community. We do however get a lot of rain, we are considered a temperate rainforest. So while we do get a lot more sun than the Pacific Northwest, we still have quite a few rainy cloudy days...this also means some mud in the winter :(. We are obviously quite far from California but we're not far from 2 major airports - Atlanta and Charlotte with direct flights. Oh and our property taxes are very low :)
