the ordinary is not perfect, but we owe them so much. when i tried to get into skin care i had the choice between the drugstore and expensive brands youtubers recommended like kiehls or fresh. the ordinary bridged that price gap and for a lot of us shifted the focus from packaging and claims to ingredients and concentrations. brands like the inkey list would probably not be here if it wasnt for the ordinary and their success.
They have great customer service and ethics, i will probably always have 2 or 3 ordinary products in my routine and will always support and recommend them ❤️

I agree, we do owe TO. Not only is it creating demand for ingredient based, less gimmicky skincare but their competitors have to compete with their prices too. I love seeing products boast about their ingredients rather than overpromising with catchy taglines "anti-ageing, fortifying, hydrating etc" and underdelivering.

    • @hannahp2240

Most of their oils work really well for me, actually. I use the chia seed oil to remove makeup in the fall/winter as well, it keeps my skin so soft.

Your skin texture might be rough because your skin lacks moisture - before you try any serums or chemical exfoliators I would strongly recommend finding a cleanser, moisturizer, and an SPF (sunscreen) that work for you and start following a skincare routine with just those products for a few months. For some people, these are all the things they will ever need, but for others, that's when serums or chemical exfoliators come into place but you shouldn't be worried about those just yet.       usually pea size so fingertip for serums and moisturizers;
      not too much cleanser just that everything is coated;
spf just a lot lot theres no correct amount u could do one layer then one layer again ,
oh and important; moisturize on damp skin so theres no water evaporation loss (moisturizer with humectans like hyaluronic acid glycerin and emollients like capric glycerides)
humectans seek in lots of water/moisture in the skin and the emollients cover the skin to trap in the moisture
because of the damp skin u will have to use very less product than u would have to on dry skin
!! on damp skin the products will penetrate deeper, so be careful with actives if u have sensitive skin
so with serum with an active in it i usually use it after i moisturised and my skin become dry, or after i cleansed and dried my skin (this also with an exfoliant)

I do more for serums so like 6 drops total probably of the buffet serum and 4 for niaciminide. For the rose hip oil I do only 3 drops or its way to oily on my face and doesn't absorb. I'll do this one on my fingers and pat it into my face.

it depends on what products you're referring to? do you have any specific ones in mind? for the serums (niacinamide and hyaluronic acid) i only use two drops, for creams (like the azelaic acid) i just use a pea sized drop, for the aha/bha face mask (you have to be very careful about ones like these) you only need to put on a thin layer so one full "syringe" or "squeeze" of the dropper thing is sufficient i believe. im not sure it that helps but its what i do and i have been fine

Personally, for me, i absolutely adore Rosehip seed oil. I’ve gone through about 4 bottles so far and I want to talk about what I know about it (from a bit of research I did on oils affecting skin) Rosehip seed oil is high in linoleic acid, it also contains a small amount of oleic acid (and according to google has a bit of tretinoin which is a retinoid) linoleic acid is great for oily, acne prone and sensitive skin or skin with eczema while oleic is great for dehydrated (oily but feels dry) dry and combination skin. They work on the oils in your skin itself (which I won’t get into but a quick google search can help you out) so depending on if you have dry skin or if you have oily skin linoleic and oleic acid helps your skin in different ways ^-^
They’re present in oils (i would recommend liah yoo’s video on them myself but google would work just as well) so even if you have super greasy and super oily skin, an oil can do wonders if you pick it correctly. Rosehip seed oil has high levels of linoleic acid, along with its own benefits of retinol and anti oxidants and all that good stuff- basically, you can mix it with your moisturiser or put it on after moisturiser because it has a really good hydrating effect. It helps to repair your skin and helps with your ✨oiliness✨, your acne scars, eczema, and it has anti inflammatory properties :)
    On to concentration!~
you yourself have linoleic acid in your body and it’s main effect is on the oils coming out of your pores, people with oily skin and a lot of acne have a lower amount of linoleic acid in their skin which makes the oil (coming out of their pores- sorry i forgot its name lmao) thick and sludgy which blocks pores and makes acne :)
more linoleic acid = fixes that issue = helps with acne
oleic acid is a thicker and richer acid, ✨however✨ while it is great for dry skin you can’t really use 100% of it.
Concentration-wise, you should have both acids in your oil / skincare routine to help it balance out (unless 100% only works for you like he said ^-^)
use a balance of both, just have MORE linoleic than oleic if you have acne ridden faces and if you have dry skin use a balance of both but more toward the oleic side ~ also, they may be great moisturisers but put them on either before moisturiser or after moisturiser (or you can mix it with moisturiser too!)
No hate to hyram, i want to give out information on the topic since I really love oils 🥰

I’ve actually moved away from The Ordinary since I started using their products a year ago, because the brands products helped me figure out what to look for in other, more well-rounded ones. I think they can be good for people trying to isolate the ingredients that work best for their skin or to make sure that it doesn’t create irritation or a reaction. Like, when I started getting good results from the niacinamide 10%, I looked for other serums that built around that ingredient, but included a lot of other complimentary ingredients. While I know The Ordinary can be confusing, I do actually think it’s a good gateway into knowing what exactly works for you, because their formulations are so simple.

I'd love to see a comparison between the ordinary and some of their sister brands like NIOD and Hylamide.
Also, I love the squalane cleanser! Definitely for dry and/or sensitive skin, but it was a saviour for my skin this winter. I had upped my retinol usage and was not prepared for how dry my skin would get when winter started, so having a cleanser that wouldn't strip my skin was a godsend. Personally, you need to take your time with it: get it melted, massage into the skin for a good 3-5mins, then emulsify it thoroughly before rinsing off.

Niod (by Deciem) actually focuses on products that are more well-rounded while The Ordinary was just supposed to be a brand like you said, for those who are experienced with skincare but would like to add in solutions to their routine, without paying a huge price for simple ingredients. Deciem actually didn't expect the ordinary to blow up because they had created 10 brands other brands and none of them made it big. Deciem likes to make these helpful ingredients easily accessible to a wide audience where everyone can afford it as well, but I think what would help is if they put instructions on the box or a little paper inside explaining what the product does, how and when to use it, and how much to use. If they don't already. Because even friends have asked me how to use the products. Niod focuses more on the ever changing technology of the skincare industry and formulates with that as the focus. Very interesting. 🤔

Ok honestly I LOVE that the ordinary has no sense of a “well rounded formulation” because I have extremely sensitive skin. I have been trying since childhood to figure out what my skin is sensitive to, but honestly, all I can figure out is what my skin is non reactive to, and it’s MUCH easier to do that with simple formulations. Does that mean my entire routine combined costs exactly as much as what I would’ve spent on a brand name, comprehensive product? Yes. Does it also mean I can specifically isolate what my skin is reacting to and change it day-by-day? Also yes. I would much rather have an abysmally long routine with 10 individual steps, than spend $50 each on 10 different “fancy” moisturizers because they all irritated my skin.

I've been struggling with severe acne since I was 10. Fast forward through several doctor and dermatologist visits, prescriptions both oral and topical, and over the counter treatments I never quite found anything that stopped the severe acne. I was 'that kid' in school. My last option was accutane, but I refused after watching my brother go through the rollercoaster ride of accutane. Now 22, I finally found something that works which was the oridinary. I was hesitant, feeling entirely certain that this wouldnt work either. I started using the products (ones that targeted the specific problems I was having). I read up on how to use them, when to use them, what I could and couldnt layer them with etc. Almost my entire routine is the ordinary. I used it for the 6 week period that they say will show whether or not the products work... and the results were less than amazing. I continued it anyway. I've now been using the ordinary for roughly 6 months and I've never seen my skin so happy. I am coated in scars, but my skin isnt actively breaking out like it had for the past 12 years. I still get some bad ones, but for the most part I'm just working on healing my scars. I am more than satisfied:)

He recommended in a video a while ago because of the ingredient list! I went through 2 jars to give it a fair shot and it was terrible. It’s not fragranced but smells like old plastic wood (if that even makes sense lol). I have normal skin and somehow it made my skin feel dry, dehydrated and dull. Definitely would NOT repurchase.

Simple, have a gentle routine and add a product or two that have something to do with your concerns
For example, I don't have any acne I just want to take care of my skin (I'm 20 yo) and I want to give it hydration and reduce oileness
I use the oil cleanser from iunik, la roche posay cleanser (very gentle) and either the cerave lotion or the iunik moisturizing gel on hot days because my skin is already oily I don't want to use any heavy creams (btw both moisturizers are very gentle especially the korean one) and I use a korean sunscreen because they are very light weight and don't have any white cast whatsoever
So due to my concerns, I can add some "supplements" that are high concentrated from the ordinary for example
I use the niacinimaide serum because it reduces my hyper pigmentations (I used to have acne when I was younger) and it reduces oileness
I used to use their lactic acid as an exfoliation (2x a week) which was great
Now I've updated to the Paula's Choice bha 2% (which I also use 2x a week) and we'll see how the results are :D
I'm planning on using either the buffet or the retinol soon but I don't know yet haha
So I'm not saying that you should have the exact same routine, absolutely not
But you should have an already existing gentle routine that suits your skin perfectly (a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer that suits your skin type and a good sunscreen) and then you can *add* a strong serum that also suits your skin concerns.. You could for example have textured skin, acne, hyper pigmentations, mature skin or alot of other concerns and you should find the right product and add it to a gentle routine
Not create a routine off of 10 very strong serums you know
I don't know if you have tiktok but there are alot of teenagers that are using the aha bha exfoliant from the ordinary (which they should use once a week for a maximum of 10min) everyday or leave it for an hour or so and then they would be like "oh my skin is burnt"
Well yes because this is a strong exfoliant of course our skin cannot handle it for more than 10min :/
Or I've seen some videos from people who had this exfoliant on and they used a dermaroller on it :o
I got so scaareeed omg I'm pretty sure their skin is destroyed
So I'm sorry if this was too long but I hope that you know what I mean :D
      Peace
