That’s literally damn hardest part of figuring out of all these things. No even kidding, like effing the practical application. Learning about all the watt hours and stuff is great but that doesn’t mean THAT much to me because I don’t know enough about it.
What actually is useful is what can to power and for how long?

it actually did NOT run your big fridge, it just doesn't have the wattage to handle a load from the larger compressor. You may hear the compressor making noise but its not running it. An average home refrigerator uses about 200 to 400 watts to run but requires 800 to 1200 for surge or starting watts. Just check inside your fridge or on the back by the model for exact usage and start watts you need. Therefore the little Jackery (GREAT PRODUCT) is not enough to run the large appliances. But be very careful running any form of generator that does not supply the full amount of start up load for your appliance or you risk the possibility of damaging your compressor in the long run and causing pre-mature failure. A larger generator would work but remember you will draw down quickly your battery source. A 300 watt generator is perfect for running small lights or charging phones, laptops or evening running a printer but can not handle larger appliances with cooling or heating elements. Thanks for the videos! Hope this helps.

What I don't think you mentioned is that this particular fridge seems to cool only the freezer, and then transfer that cooled space into the fridge side. The noise heard in the video was clearly the fan that blows air from the freezer into the refrigerator. There was no compressor running during that fridge test......
It is rare to have a refrigerator with two compressors; one for the freezer and one for the fridge. That was just the fan taking air from the freezer and cooling the fridge.

If I'm not mistaken, it ran your big fridge cause it didn't actually run it haha...meaning it powered the lights and low electricity led buttons water pump etc, but there's no way in hell it's running any compressor lol.. no like others have said, it's really only good for charging small devices. Unfortunately if you want a battery that's practical for appliances, you need a 1500w-2500 and they run 1000 up to 4000.. it sucks cause that's what I need something to power electric cookware on the road, but I can't justify spending 1,200 on a damn battery... There is definitely noise, but most refrigerators do not have two compressors. He opened the fridge side when he should have opened the freezer side. Refrigerators without two compressors cool the freezer with the compressor, and then transfer cool air to the fridge side from the freezer.

I think that with these power stations, a lot depends on how much the appliance uses when it's winding up. Many have high power requirements for the first minutes or so.
Another thing... the manufacturers recommend that for longest service, do not use more than 60% of the juice before recharging. 👍

My small jackety is usually used to power video production equipment and dose it quite well. I often use it on my day job to run work LED work lights and small power tools. I even was crazy enough to try to powe a small digital sound mixer and two powered speakers each with 1000 watt class D amplifiers... Well it did it and we were able to reach a reasonable volume level for about 1 1/2 hours. Then it needed a charge. I usually recharge it over night in the work van and am ready for the next day. Long story short the small jackery is good for small or high efficiency equipment that don't need high amounts starting surge power but it simply will not handle large power draw appliances .

These portable batteries cannot power resistive heating elements easily. Even if its in their power range their sensors trigger.
Some things will run easily because of their efficiency and careful powerhandling like your big fridge. Such things do not trigger the sensor but yes any sort of resistance that this battery finds unacceptable even in some motors it will power off.
In case of appliances like blenders where they will pull variable power like 500w then suddenly 800w once you put ice in it or sometning.... the jackery will hesitate here alot it does not like too much variable current draw.

One of those simple kill-o-watt power monitors would have told you the same thing with fewer contortions. I'd advise anybody who is thinking about one of these Jackerys to invest 15 bucks in a meter/monitor to first decide how large a power unit you need to buy for whatever you want to power. Personally, I sprung for the 880, (will supply 1000 with a 2000watt surge) because I know it will power either my fridge or freezer. Tip: ANYTHING with a heater is gonna be a power black hole. Yeepers - I clocked my danged toaster at an 800 watt draw. Also, your kitchen fridge might be a lot newer or just plain a lot more energy efficient than the cheesy little dorm fridge. Needs further research on your part. Like I said - get one of those Kill-o-watt meters. Watch when it kicks in for the startup surge.

Small generators like the Jackery 240, 300, etc. are really good for charging phones, tablets, and other small electronic items. They also run LED lights for long periods of time because LED lights draw so little wattage. They can also run low wattage camping fans for quite a while. Bigger items either require too much running wattage than the maximum watts that the generator can produce or the initial/periodic power draws are too much for them. (It is always fun to see the advertisements from the generator companies. They have someone running everything you can think of at a table outside their tent with a small generator or they show someone hiking with minimal equipment but lugging around big generator. Neither thing is going to happen.)

those portable batteries work great for my ham radios.
but a fail to be a reserve for home appliances.
not that there bad. just too small.
devote a location close to your main power in from the grid. learn how to do it right . but a power auto transfer switch.
the supply power can be the:
    grid,
    solar, min of 2kwh.
generator, min of a 7K unit.
battery. at least 8,000 amp hrs.
it switches as needed. and will NOT back feed it the grid. ( safety thing for a worker).

    • @JDubbsadventure
      @JDubbsadventure  3 місяці тому

When I worked as a contractor for dominion power I learned that the back feeding wasn’t as big of a deal as long as you follow all the safety protocols in place. That said a lot of people that do that work are not properly trained and become complacent after years of work

Well that really depends on your refrigerator. We lost power a few months back for 6 days and 2 jackery units (300&500)with 2 solar panels it worked as if it was plugged into the wall. The only “problem” was remembering to switch the units around. I think the 500 or 1000 with a 100w solar panel would work for the refrigerator if that’s what you’re wanting that would be a plug it up and forget it setup
