  • Today we are trying Sunday roast at Toby Carvery for the first time. We weren't sure what to expect going to Toby Carvery, but overall we thought it was a pretty good meal for the price. For those of you who don't know much about it (like us before we went), Toby Carvery is a British chain of carvery-style restaurants, serving roast meats and traditional Sunday roast dinner accompaniments such as Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, gravy, and vegetables. At Toby Carvery, you can choose from four roasted meats and as many vegetables and accompaniments as you want from the buffet-style counters. Toby Carvery has built its brand around offering a "home of the roast" experience, aiming to serve traditional British roast dinners at affordable prices.
What are your thoughts on Toby Carvery? Worth the price of better to have a traditional Sunday roast somewhere else?

In the early 90s Toby took over an old pub in my town and opened a. Carvery. It was a revelation!! You still can't beat a good carvery. I have some great memories of big family Sunday lunches with family members who are no longer with us. Definitely comfort food

You hit the nail on the head, Toby will never beat a home made roast or even a good pub roast, but when you take into account the price, the amount of food you can get, the fact there's almost every possible side for you to pick and choose and how much easier it is than making one yourself, that's when Toby really shines.

Sunday roast every week. Bubble and squeak with a slice of meat on monday. Left overs with mash Tuesday. Meat stewed up with veg Wednesday. Soup Thursday. Fish and chips Friday. Maybe sausage and mash Saturday.
Edit. This was the routine in the 1950's, not everyone could afford to waste food. My nan grew her own veg so the food budget was carefully managed. No freezer or refrigerator and tinned goods were a luxury.
The Sunday roast was the main meal of the week with a big piece of Yorkshire pudding so that you didn't eat too much meat. We would have the rest of the pudding the next day, cold with marmalade on.

use a glass out the cupboard and fill it once with plain flour, once with eggs, and once with milk. whisk it all into a smooth batter with a pinch of salt. leave it to rest on the side for min.30 minutes, up to 2 hours until it's a bit aerated. preheat your deep muffin tray at 220C with a splash of oil in each well until it's really hot. whisk the batter again just before use and pour it into the hot oil and straight back into the oven, bake it for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. do NOT open the oven until they're ready! this method gets perfect monster yorkshire puddings every time!

The sweet potato/squash type thing was probably swede, quite often included with roasts, usually in smash with carrot. Goes great with pork. Also worth checking out the Toby breakfast for a Yorkshire pudding baked bean float, which is probably the silliest most British food you can make.

Toby is not the high end food some might like, but when you consider some families are on a budget and they can feed their family well for the price then Toby delivers well. If you are somewhere you don't know well and need food, well you know what to expect and that can also be helpful sometimes. Good to see our friends from the USA doing Sunday roasts and learning that goose fat is the better option to roast potatoes. Safe travels and enjoy the wider UK

Yes, Mustard is an ingredient in Cauliflower Cheese. Lea and Perrins (Worcestershire) sauce is another common addition.

I'm ~50 now and a Sunday roast was always a weekly thing when I was a child in the north east...my old mother still does them. We were pretty poor, so it wasn't an affluence thing...the left-overs would be used for a few days after (curry, bubble&squeek). The roast looked great for the price - here on the south coast you pay ~£20 for a take-away roast.

When I make it, I always add in a good teaspoon of Dijon mustard (French, but all good haha), I think it adds a lot to the sauce. And many Brits would now call it mac'n'cheese. I am also a sucker for the condiments too, cranberry with the turkey, apple sauce with the pork and gammon, horseradish with the beef, and you can take as much as you like! Keep up the excellent work! 😊

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 8 місяців тому

@@jacqueline8559 yep mint sauce is easily the most delicious sauce in the world, by a long long way. I always have loads of mint sauce with my roasts, regardless of what meat I've got, because it goes just as well with chicken, turkey, pork, beef, duck etc as it does with lamb. I often mix mint sauce into the gravy too, just to make it be able to cover everything on the plate more easily, cos I pour gravy on everything and not just onto the meat.
I do love cranberry sauce too, and that's always lovely with any kind of meat too, not just turkey. But yeah if I have to choose one sauce over all others, I'm choosing mint sauce every single time. It's just absolutely gorgeous. And goes well with everything.
Whenever I make mushy peas I always stir in a big dollop of mint sauce too, can't have mushy peas without mint.
I've even used mint sauce on fish and chips (or battered sausage and chips) from a chip shop. It goes very well with that, because chip shop chips are basically like roast potatoes anyway (or close enough to them, anyway) and mint sauce goes well with any kind of meat, or even fish, but yeah especially if you get something from there like a battered sausage, or a saveloy, then the mint sauce is absolutely gorgeous with those.

@@TheMagicGeekdom it was really woof….there was a placard in the carvery servery encouraging you to buy your canine chum a slap up steak..i think its only fair…him smelling a juicy joint and not getting any…its cruelty not to treat them up too.

I've never been keen on carveries because you may not know how long the food's been out (a bit like your buffet chains like Golden Corral in the US) but when you've got one that you know you can trust it's great! EDIT: Ha, posted this before you made the same comparison in your opening!

Roast dinners are definitely a once a week dish in our household! Not necessarily a Sunday, and sometimes I will cheat and use chicken parcels from the local butchers (faster to cook) but we do love a good roast!

Really love your video's, not overly stereotyping the food and easy to watch, hope one day you get to try different things across the UK, from kippers to Northumberland to Wiltshire ham. 🥰

It's interesting watching people try roast dinner for the first time.
Where you said 'it's not like they have it every week'. Well that's true for most people now but when I was a kid in the 80s it was fairly common for families to have a roast dinner every Sunday. Some of the components were different, like we didn't usually have the mac and cheese or the cauliflower cheese and there would only be one kind of potato (either boiled or roast) and one kind of meat (usually beef, lamb or chicken), but it was definitely the highlight of the week as far as family dinners went.
Smelling a roast dinner cooking still always takes me back to coming home from church and watching 'big daddy' on the wrestling, and smurfs, on TV while dinner cooked

I’ve never heard Toby carvery called “classy” lol but I love that you liked it! It’s just a cheap easy place for mum to get a break from cooking and not feel bad about it 😂 like at a McDonalds lol.

Carvery places like this come to mind when people go on about portion sizes in America!

That's fair. We probably have more places like that in US than in the UK.

The sauce on the roast potato’s you had is beef dripping. Takes it up a level 🤩
