Question: Do You Really Need Antivirus Software?

  • Hi there Eli, my friends and I got into an argument around whether an anti virus/anti malware software is necessary in a home setting. Many articles that I have read state that advanced pieces of malware can in fact bypass most anti virus software.

Came here wondering if i needed antivirus and then he started talking about porn. I'm pretty sure that's the only part my family heard since this was on my speakers. Now I'm sure my family thinks I'm trying to figure out which porn websites are legit and if i infected my computer due to porn. Thanks, Obama.

Many sites are infected without the knowledge of the site owners, being achieved by allowing infected advert scripts to run on the frontend. Hence the phrase 'drive-by-downloads'

+Rafal Borowski I haven"t had an Anti Virus installed on this piece of shit for over 2 years now. And I am absolutely positive I have no virus. I never even got any warnings when I DID have one installed. It's called using your brain. Don't download shit that is too good to be true/free. Use common sense. If the software you're trying to install is something that SHOULD be a few hundred megs, or a few gigs, make sure before you run it. Beware of installers that are one file, but don't appear to be named correctly, as if it was a custom installer that was made by someone OTHER THAN the original creator. It could be installing other software that is NOT part of the program you want. Read the comments if you're downloading torrents containing software. Usually someone will say something pretty quick if the file contains a virus. And if it's a false alarm, people will refute the claim even quicker. But really it boils down mostly to common computer sense, and unfortunately, most computer users, even quite a few smart, advanced users, still NEED an Anti Virus, simply because even though they're really smart, they didn't grow up in the DOS days, or ever really had much of a need to pay attention to certain details. Thankfully, I'm one who HAS. Occasionally I'll run a scan online, with the freebees that run as java applets just to make sure though.

Eli, thanks for doing these videos. I have learned a lot about Windows security that I never knew before. I have a labtop running Windows 10 and using Bitdefender Antivirius free edition. I do all of my browsing of the internet, as well as, other offline stuff on a local account. I only use Google Chrome as my browser, running the Adblock extension, and the Ghostery extension. I have turned off as many of the options that can in reference to privacy concerns. I'm currently researching the ZoneAlarm free firewall, and the Comodo free firewall, but I would like to get your opinion on these, and if you feel that a firewall would be of a benefit to me before I install one of them. Is there anything else that you would recommend that I can do for better security?

I'm still kind of new to IT (gonna be 1 year in a month) so I'm no master. But in the company I work at Anti-Virus Software is badly seen. Mostly because it blocks a lot of our software (legitimate software) and blocks a lot of stuff while we're developing, my question is, is this normal and unavoidable or are there ways to not alert the antiviruses or show antiviruses that the software is in fact legitimate and not harmful?

I use Microsoft Edge because I recently got Windows 10, but recently on certain websites such as twitter and gmail, they can sometimes freeze randomly for around 5-20 seconds, and the page is no longer responding in that time period. Should I be concerned, or is it normal? I never ran into problems with Chrome back on Windows 8, so I'm not sure if it's because Microsoft edge is worse, or it's some sort of virus/malware.

Many OS comes with inbuilt security software, but it is a must to have 3rd party software application installed to give an extra protection to your computer. This 3rd party applications such as Comodo antivirus comes with an advanced feature such as auto sand boxing, default Deny Protection, etc to give complete protection to the system.

It may be a stupid question, but do you think Windows Defender is enough (+Malwarebytes scan sometimes) if I don't go to questionable websites (I have enough porn downloaded, don't have to browse those kinda stuff :D ) and I keep my Windows and every program up-to-date? I'm using windows 8.1, I'm 18 years old and I've been using computers since I was like 10. I'm a big fan of you btw, really like your videos. Keep up the good work. :)
PS: I've been using Avast for 3-4 years, but I had an issue with sound crackling and I ended up uninstalling it and my system feels so much faster without it.

The simple answer is no. A good anti-virus software should have a dedicated team to update their database of viruses to block, I personally think a 3rd party application dedicated to that job is good.

+Grof Gergely (GeKKo525) Yes Defender/Security Essentials is good enough as a virus scanner if you follow the rest of Eli's advice. MS did not write defender/Security Essentials. They bought an excellent antivirus company and update that software all the time. You have to remember - MS has in-depth knowledge and access to Windows insider information. They also know if their antivirus is compromised it's front page news - even in the non-Tech headlines. They don't want bad press! And trust me - MS and ALL the big AV names have had bad press at some point. No product is perfect.
One of the main reasons big companies don't just use Defender/Security Essentials is management and enforcement. Enterprise AV software can be pushed out to every computer and will not allow a dumb-ass user to uninstall even if they have administrator rights. Some of the big ones that large software companies use cause no end of troubles in themselves. Slowing down computers is the biggest issue. And of course they cost a relative pile of money and require dedicated employees to deal with and monitor the system.
If you work for a cheap company or are just sick of the enterprise software headaches you can lock down and force defender/SE on people too - using domains and group policy. Group policy is an amazing part of Active Directory so even if you give users full admin rights you can still make important restrictions on their systems (password enforcement, AV, patching etc)). Really cool. Not sure if Eli has a video on it, but if he does check it out. If not - he needs to make a video! The odd thing is I've worked for giant software companies that don't seem to even know about Windows group policy. Or set proper policies, since some important ones are off by default. Shameful!
Patch patch and patch your system - and keep the Firewall ON, and Security Essentials is fine. And fast - it won't bog down your system. (Sometimes we wait a few days to patch unless there is a huge emergency issue the patch addresses. Patches - like all software - can have bugs, so let other people find the bugs. If there is a huge bug the company will likely remove the patch after a few days - and if you haven't installed it you can save yourself a headache). But generally just set your software to patch on schedule unless you're a real nerd and watch and read about every patch. Trust me - most patches aren't explained, since they know bad guys are looking for the information about what you're patching. The gory details are best kept secret. Nothing wrong with secrets - if they're used for good.
Most viruses now days focus on systems with glaring holes that weren't patched. Like Eli says most problems are caused by something you downloaded and installed intentionally. Virus scanners can often recognise them, but by the time you install who knows what damage you've done. A lot of people assume because it's free and from MS it isn't any good, but check out tests and it always comes near the top. And the fact that it doesn't slow down or interfere with the computer is huge. The biggest issue with Security Essentials is it's almost too good to be true. Free AND fast. People are suspicious of a good thing.
MS didn't make it free out of the goodness of their hearts. They give it away because they know how important anti-virus is and they got sick of all the rampant viruses and bad headlines. (You still hear from the Linux geeks who still think Windows is rampant with viruses. It isn't if you have basic security set up). MS used to license and give a way AV free with certain later versions of DOS (yes, I'm that old - 51), and it was a huge mistake for them to wait so long to buy an Antivirus company and include it with Windows. Seriously - at one point they claimed Internet explorer was essential to Windows but an included anti-virus wasn't? Often times it's political. Competing AV companies and the European Union tend to hate free things included in Windows - but like the name "Defender" "Security Essentials" is essential! It protects people now and is included as part of the OS for those folks that don't know any better. Believe it or not - most Windows users aren't tech people like us. They aren't interested in the workings of their computer - much like most drivers aren't mechanics.
Also, if you do something stupid a system restore is a great tool MS has built into Windows. It's not a full super long reinstall of your system just a restore to a certain point in time. It doesn't hurt files you've created and again - it's free and from MS. (Check if Eli has a video on it. If not he should make one! Or maybe I should lol)

    • @cgaccount3669
      @cgaccount3669 9 років тому

+XrSFeed MS software - Defender/Security Essentials is updated daily. There is a dedicated MS team doing this - of course! MS doesn't want their product to be bad, and they certainly want to keep Windows virus free. If a rampant virus hits the world their good name is in the headlines. Not something they want to see!

Yet he still gets all this malware on there. Deep freeze is absolutely amazing for this. I setup my computer how I want it, keep all of my files on an external drive, and lock my system down. If anything happens to it I just turn it off, then turn it back on. There is a scheduled time where the computer reboots into maintenance mode, i update the software, and it reboots when it's done, i wake up the next morning and i can't tell anything has changed. I can literally run a deltree, reboot the computer, and it will all be working again. I was introduced to the software by our sys admin after he got tired of users installing things without his permission or going to questionable websites.

Spot on. Only thing I would humbly disagree with is User vs Admin accounts. If I installed and explained user accounts on all my customers PCs I would inundated with calls the second they try to install something. My life would be incessantly robotic with calls like "why can't I update my computer"? "Why can't I install so and so programs"? Informing the customer is one thing teaching them to be constantly vigilant of virus/malware is my job. In a heavy age + community I would put my customers in positions they would not want to call me back If I did that.

always had anti virus, always had issues with it, conflicting with programs etc. Got a new machine a year ago, decided not to run any anti-virus on it, its running great still basically like the day I first set it up. I have been doing a few things differently though, all my torrenting is going through a separate server and I decided to only put a 500gb ssd in it which has let me to more consciously deal with removing unnecessary files and apps. I do have windows defender running, and that seems to be enough.

Especially when it can come at no cost, I can't see why you wouldn't. When I used Windows, I used Firefox, started out with Norton, but soon dumped it for AVG, and then went to Avast, which is still my choice when dealing with Windows machines of family members, though I have heard good things about the Microsoft one these days. And I also always kept things updated, and just generally tried to avoid things I knew were filled with software disease. Now that I have a Mac, I don't bother with antivirus on Mac OS, I do if I use Bootcamp or a virtual machine, I keep software up to date, and I am especially careful about what I download and install, as this is the area where most malware gets into a Mac from what I've seen. Its not just porn sites that use that "to view our content, you have to install this..." Sometimes its music video type websites, as was the case with my boss' daughter, and sometimes they fake Flash, say your flash is outdated, then so kindly start a download for the installer of the "up to date" version, which replaced Flash with adware that hijacks your web browser. Even my mom fell for that and then I mistakenly installed it for her thinking it was the real thing. Had to fix that mess. Its also the reason no one other than me has the Administrator password for the family computer iMac, I just don't want them to accidentally screw it up. I learned not to install ANYTHING who's source you can't be sure of.

My comps are offline and nobody else uses them and I mostly use GNU/Linux on them. Yes, I do use windows some, but I use it offline and I use some offline installers to install some programs that I'm not sure I can go without. I plan to migrate to Linux as much as I can as soon as I get internet wifi here cheap. I'll probably put wine on linux and if that doesn't run what I need it to, maybe I'll see if the live miniXP on hiren's boot cd can. I'm hoping that if wine doesn't do every windows thing I feel that I need, then (hopefully) ReactOS will do everything I need it to once it gets to beta testing.
I know that there is a such thing as a virus that was made for linux, but somebody isn't likely to get a virus specifically for linux without trying to. I usually try to back up my stuff to an external 1tb usb hard drive, and I disconnect it when I'm not using it.
Did I say already that my comps are offline and nobody else uses them?
Yeah, so, offline, nobody else uses them, linux, I back stuff up, I don't keep the back up drive attached when I'm not using it, I have multiboot usb flash drives with live linux distros, CDs and DVDs with linux live distros, and I don't leave my comps on when I'm not using them. About the only other thing I could do would be to periodically backup my stuff to an external location (offline storage) with a bunch of (long) password protection, in a safe that only I have the combination to.

I believe if you have self control and knowledge of what you're doing on your own system, you do not need an antivirus software. I think the only protection you ever need is malware bytes just in case and ccleaner (which isn't protection) to clean out damaged registry files and cache/temporary files. If you do basic web browsing and common sense to not install malicous or questionable software, you're fine. Plus, I use Linux hahaha.

Same rule applies. Don't download 3rd party applications you don't trust or need. I wouldn't really call Android "Linux". It may use the Linux kernal, but really it is just a bunch of java stuff on top of the Kernal. Would you think Chrome OS as Linux? It uses the Linux Kernal though.

Personally I have been gaming on the PC for around 10 years at this point and I have never used Antivirus software. However, when it comes to format time or I wanna just check, I will install some and check... So far I think on two occasions I got security "warnings" for files that could well have been false positives but apart from that, never had a problem. Now, I understand that just because it has not happened yet, does not mean that it won't but at this point I believe I am profitable when it comes to time wasted scanning, slightly worse system performance and other inconveniences to the point where if I did need to do something due to infection I would be ok with that.

Eli, I have a quick question about something you mentioned in the video. You touched on having two accounts for Windows login. Once I setup my initial admin account on my new computer, and upgrade to Windows 10, and then setup a second non-admin account for everyday use, is there any reason from that point on to ever log in to the admin account and will software like BitDefender still function with complete functionality, as it would on an admin account?
Thanks from a new Windows 10 user!.

    • @strangejune
      @strangejune 8 років тому

      +SecurityContractors
      1) There is a point to log on to the administrator. I don't know everything about Windows 10, however. The admin account is needed to install programs, open suspicious programs, and other things. For the admin - user combo to even be effective, the admin (Preferably both) account needs to have a password.
      2) Your antivirus may work, it might not have ALL functionality depending on what it is trying to do. Most things, however, should ask for the admin access/password.

Windows Defender or MS security essentials is pretty much the best option out there and it is in fact free and built in your MS windows OS(Windows Vista and up).
I receive at least 1 definitions updates everyday for windows defender, sometimes 2 or even 3.
Beyond that, it really depends on your usage, like if you know what you're doing, you don't even need a 3rd party antivirus.
Well, I also use a monitor and firewall utility called Glasswire, it is free, light wight and amazing, if you screw up and click on something you can block it right away.

A lot of the people saying they AV is not needed don't seem to understand that tons of the people that use computers barely know how to turn the thing on. I have helped many people remove viruses from their PC. There always seems to be that new one that gets through, but when I look at their logs, most of the time, many viruses were captured and quarantined. Just because you know how to use a PC and keep yourself safe doesn't mean the person next to you does. As someone who has been in the IT field for 10+ years as a IT Technician, there are lots of people out there that hardly know how to use a PC even when their daily work activities require them to do so. Copy and paste or even creating a short-cut is mind blowing to them when I show how to do it. These associates at work range from 18 years to 60. I can understand the older gen not know about computers and technology since they didn't grow up with it but at least having protection is better then none at all. All I am saying is that most people out there aren't knowledgeable about them, just enough to get by.

  • @sbrazenor2

I have a different perspective on this question's answer. I have a system that I use for... shall we say, questionably procured software and media... It is not used for anything important and is not on most of the time. If I keep a back-up of it from a stable running point, I can do whatever I want to it, and then just recover it if things turn bad.
I have like a dozen computers in my house, so I guess I can get away with that. I also use a lot of Apple computers for things that might be risky to PCs. Most of the time there's not much risk to Macs. (Though there is still some risk, I admit.)
