      That's actually how they're supposed to work though. It's not that it necessarily sees that it's a competitor's product but rather they detect that a program (any program) has accesses to your system that it probably shouldn't.

    • @advice-13
      @advice-13 4 роки тому +150

      @@lucassatie Uh, he said multiple times in the video they're usually just scanning a list of known viruses, not looking at permissions a program has. So, that's not how they work at all.

    When I bought my first laptop, it came with a 1 year licence of McAfee. Being new to the pc enthousiasm, I left if for a year, everything was great! Until a year and one day. The day that my licence expired, McAfee started hugginh 99% of my CPU, nringing my system to a halt! And the worst part? Whenever I started task manager, it would stop hugging to not be seen. Meanwhile, I was constantly being harrassed by McAfee popups saying that I was no longer protected or that my system had been infected, URGING me to renew for another year. I managed to find the culprit by first sorting the processes by CPU usage, most first, closing task manager, wait for my system to slow down, starting shadow play to record the screen then fire up task manager. By rewatching the fotage in slowmo, I saw McAfee at 99% for about a second before it stopped. Immediatly uninstalled it.

      Same, my laptop came with McAfee, had it for about a year (it was normally a year but the countdown had started before I bought the laptop, but I didn't care). After the almost one year, I uninstalled it right away. TBH I am happy with Windows Defender, so far I haven't had any issues with anything, no viruses, no stupid notifications nothing, and no hits on the performance.

    Fun fact: according to the most reputed antivirus testing site avtest, windows defender is realistically all you'll ever need.
    I tend to agree as I've never had a 3rd party antivirus/antimalware software since 2007 and I've never had my PC infected. I do live more dangerously than most others (if you know what i mean) but still defender seems to work just fine.

    • @driverdis3488
      @driverdis3488 4 роки тому +34

      Yep, once Windows 10 came out Windows Defender became fine for people, especially the general public. I work retail and the first thing I tell customers when they come in to purchase antivirus is to uninstall their current antivirus and Windows Defender will protect them for free.
      I am shocked by how many people don’t even know Windows has free AntiVirus as they have always purchased computers from stores with preinstalled Norton or McAfee and always assumed they had to keep renewing it.
      I am sure most people disregard what I have to say since I am a retail worker but whatever, at least someone will listen and if not they can still buy their AV software in store (for now, until everything ends up all digital)
      I personally use Windows Defender, and for files I really don’t know anything about I will run them thorough virustotal for some additional AV perspectives on a file.

      I used to rely on Avast, but the software became too naggy. Constantly giving popups for special offers etc. Switched to defender, and haven't looked back, it's great, and less performance hit than Avast too.

    • @rainmaker6217

      It really depends a lot. Defender/security is usually plenty for most people, but I have had atempts that were more sophisticated on my computer and defender does nothing against that. I used to have a subscription for Bitdefender, but due to various reasons I really couldn't use that any more as it both wasn't secure enough and didn't allow me the range of controll that I wanted. These days I use Emsisoft, and have mostly great experiences with that. I do understand that not everyone else gets affected by attacks as frequently as I do however (I do get exposed partly due to my interests, partly due to my job and partly just becasue of my stupid curiosity).

    Back in the late Aughts, I actually worked FOR Symantec AND Webroot collecting application benchmarks to assess performance impact by antivirus suites. The worst performances were ALWAYS in file transfers. Without spilling too much tea, essentially the way anti-malware suites work are by hashing every single file on the system into a log, uploading the log to their cloud server (or against their own local definition base) and then just saying "these are known hashes, are any of them on the system?" Then, it just monitors the system for CHANGES to files and updates the SHA in the table after comparing it to the SHA database. So, if you do big file transfers or do something that is constantly updating a single file (like Zipping something), it'll be constantly hitting that hashing algo and doing SHA compares, which is what tanks the access time performance.

      Welp, here's another guy comparing 15 years ago to the present and think it's still the same. You grew up, but never the wiser.

      Do you turn off Windows Defender? Because it's installed and running by default on Windows 10 and it's actually a decent antivirus solution. (This is assuming you use Windows of course.)

      That's part of the reason I finally got fed up with fixing my mother's and aunt's computers, and moved them over to Neverware Cloudready home edition OS(Chromium OS), and have had no real issues since, and a bonus by putting them on the hardware i want, and not the Chrome hardware Google wants you to use for official Chrome OS, I don't have to worry about replacing hardware that's still doing it's job just fine every 5 - 6 years only to fill up the pockets of the hardware maker, and google's themselves.

    Dude those specs on that " few years old" mock gaming rig are still better than the comps many have.
