The Grand Funk Live Album was the first record I ever bought with my own money. I got to see them live in 1971
at the Hollywood Sportatorium on October 15th when they were still the original three piece band. I was blown away and saw them again on November 10th, again at the Sportatorium in 1972. Ive been a fan ever since!

That's a fantastic story - thanks for sharing. It's amazing how big they were - and unfortunately, how forgotten they are to the general music community. I can't remember the last time I heard Grand Funk on commercial terrrestrial radio, but of course radio sucks so not too surprising I guess.

I always liked Grand Funk Railroad from the first 45s of Were in American Band and Locomotion to the albums of Don Mark & Mel and Greatest Hits. I never saw GFR but I did see Mark Farner with Ringo Starr's All Star Band as well. I had a friend who met him on one of those 70s Rock and Roll cruises and he said he was one of the nicest guys he had ever met in the music world. He was very impressed by him. He signed all of his stuff (huge GFR fan) and talked to him for quite some time. I'm glad he was cool with you as well. "Can I get a witness!"

Yea. I met him twice. Signed a bunch of stuff and was so nice and down to earth.

Hey Alan good to see you again. Love Grand Funk. Walk Like a Man and Shinin' On are two of my favorites. I have 4 of their albums. Only got into them because I needed to have "I'm you're Captain".
Then I discovered all their other excellent tunes.
It's no joke, they have very good songcraft. It's not just thrown together rock and rhythm and blues.
I don't know if there ever will be a reunion. To hear Mark Farner tell it he really got screwed by the rest of the band.
    Thanks Buddy.

Thanks as always. Its such a shame. Farner always says how he’d love to reform the band. Sometimes he’s virtually begging for it. But clearly Brewer will have no part in it. The animosity is pretty brutal. Their previous reunion live album Bosnia is awesome and gives a taste of what we’re missing unfortunately. Thanks again

I've liked Grand Funk from the start , and have every album they came out with ! Seen them live 5 times . their music will live on just like the Beatles !! By the way you have quite the shrine there !!

Thanks so much. You've seen the original band 5 times. Wow - I wish. I saw them once and saw Farner and the "new" Funk. I wish they could bury the hatchet and let Farner back in. Unbelievable. I wish their music would live on like the Beatles, to the general public. They certainly do in my house. Thanks so much again.

NO,NO, NO!!!! Alan, put dat funk back in the trunk🤣😂 Grand Funk Railroad was at the Lafitte Seafood Festival Saturday night. They were the headliners. I have never been a big Funkster. I do actually like a few of them. I have always enjoyed their cover of Locomotion. I saw them once in their heyday. I like the box and that yellow vinyl. TNUC forever!!!

Lafitte Seafood Festival. That sounds like an outtake from Spinal Tap. Hopefully it was better than it sounds. Lol.

I give Trunk Of Funk a capital C in the clever department. Critics be damned, Grand Funk Railroad was a hugely successful band in the 1970s. Its albums sold well and its arena concerts sold out. Hell, GFR even sold out Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles did. It didn’t matter to the general public that the band members were not critically favored in terms of songwriting and musicianship. GFR gave the people what they wanted: Fun songs that got feet (and other body parts) moving and voices singing along. Mark Farner did seem to be a genuinely nice guy when I met him after a concert.

As Patti Smith once said. Power To The People. Grand Funk Railroad exemplified that. They were the peoples band.

Alan, You and I are simpatico to the max about GFR. I have all their records through Good Singin' Good Playin' on original vinyl, CD and a few CDr's that I got from collectors before the 2002 remasters were released. They were the shit when I was in high school. I have interviewed Don & Mel four times and Mark twice. I will say that the "Hits" collection has only single edits on it, so while I own it, I don't like it much.If you ever want someone to discuss GFR with, I'm your guy.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate that and I’ll definitely keep that in mind. They sure were the shit in their day. I remember the time’s square advertisement. Stayed up s king time because of a strike. They were huge in every way.

I think my favorite album of theirs is 'Grand Funk Goes Gershwin'.
    Didn't sell, unfortunately.
Produced by, the great, Artie Zipp of Polymer Records fame.
Big disappointment. What a shame. Sad.

Nothing good to say for and about the funk, except sociopath Terry knight whom I had the displeasure of meeting when he fronted the pack, pulled off a scam and ripped off his band. His murder was karma. Closet to home and down that country road from survival the only funk I listened to twice, and country road only for the cool bassline
