I know everyone says Volgin knew Venom wasn't who he was because of the eyes. I say we know Volgin has a much more effective way of finding out how much of a handful someone is.

I like how Volgin is just plain evil and all around a monster. That adds contrast to many of the other antagonists and also makes very satisfying for his 2 downfalls.
I like how MGS3 has a villain that you’re not entirely sure you want to fight with The Boss, and also has Volgin who’s just a sadistic lunatic you can’t wait to finish off.
Honestly I have thought that primary inspiration for Volgin was Bison from STREET FIGHTER In both cases they are "supervillain" dictator type antagonist, that has massive military power, but also skilled in supernatural psychic power. Especially considering that his father 01:07 looks nearly identical to Bison

Kind of weird Metal Gear never did much with the whole superpowers angle. Between Volgin's Electricity manipulation, the Sorrow's Telepathy and Psycho Mantis's telekinesis you'd figure we'd get more soldiers with insane powers rather than just fancy tech.
Well, you could also include Vulcan Raven into that mix since he had shamanic powers, and then their's Fortune who was able to stop Revolver Ocelot's missile attack, so i guess there were a few characters with supernatural powers.
There was a guy who theorized that it might be because Volgin hailed from a region of eastern Russia that may have some Japanese influence on their folklore, considering their proximity.
THANK YOU for mentioning that volgin genuinely cares about raikov! it’s one of his few redeeming / humanising character traits and people overlook it so much when it really adds a more realistic aspect to his character - that even people who seem irredeemably evil are still human. those two genuinely care about each other (raikov is pissed at snake in portable ops for killing volgin) and it’s their only positive traits lmao

Maybe volgin has ties to nikola tesla experiments probably like in the red alert games. Soviets in video games usually have electrical and psychic weapons since Mantis is from russia and a psychic just like yuri from red alert 2
