Quick question, how does the subject tracking mode work in Live View? Is it the same as on the Z cameras where you have to press OK from Auto Area? Thanks for all your hard work in making these videos.
A little help if you would... the Nikon website says this has a built in flash, the largest US online retailer's website says it does not, a UA-camr shot at the trade show says it does not except there is an image in his video showing the pop-up flash. You have one in your hands... flash or no flash ? Thanks
I love the look of the count down on long exposures I think your spot on there. I now my X1D has it and it is so useful for a.)seeing at a glance how long you have. B.) Just to see the the camera is still working. Great video once move. I hope you had a great new year and are looking forward to anamzing 2020.
At 9:30 the menu seems to indicate you can enter a fine tune for a lens while in live view. I cant for the life of me figure out why that would ever be needed when the focus is determined directly from the sensor. How could that ever be in error? Thats one of the most important benefits of mirrorless in the first place. Love your chats Ricci.
it would be nice to know the bitrates that camera gives for video as well as more info about other video features comes with it,like aspect ratios or anything in this topic, thank you for this very nice video!
Just wondering if people actually need 4k. Seems like an overkill for most. Wondering if I should get a d780 or wait for z6ii to get cheaper (will use adapted glass)
How about the af system for video? Do we have already a perfect af system for eye tracking and face recognizing or this is also a big problem at Nikon for $2200? Please do some video to see how af works in video mode. thnx
you can easily shoot long exposure with z7/z6, put camera shutter speed on time, use live view and turn on touch screen shooting, then touch the screen gently wait the time you want then touch the screen (black screen) again and it will stop
Thanks for the information, Ricci! You've already pointed out several new features that other "reviewers" have missed. Interesting! (And, yeah... I want a firmware update for ALL Nikon cameras, for those long exposures.)
Interested if the f mount af-s lenses make the same jittery sound as they do on the FTZ. I know the Z lenses were built with video AF in mind. Not many AF-P full frame lenses apart from 70-300. Maybe we will see a new af-p 24-120 f4 soon?
Hi Ricci, great brief review, but I am wondering why no pop up flash? On my D750 I find it invaluable for quick and easy off camera flash triggering for my property photography. Have Nikon sacrificed that feature for better weather-sealing or are they just being greedy in trying to sell alternative Nikon flash triggers?
Certainly better weather sealing and build quality... they know that realistically you could just buy a third party flash system so it’s not a guaranteed Nikon flash sale
@@RicciTalks Yes OK for simple triggering but ... 3rd party systems don't always have the same control as the dedicated Nikon CLS and that's what I feel we will be missing here - bad move IMHO !
Well the "2 card slots" are UHS II, what is noteworthy, We do not have AI indexing ring anymore, what is noteworthy, and We do not have the on camera flash anymore, what is kind of noteworthy as well.
Any word on why there's no joystick, are they expecting people to use the screen as a touchpad? Is the buffer depth better? Surprised there's no stabilization.
There is no surprise sadly about IBIS, the only DSLR with it is the less famous Pentax, nothing different for the dslr market, apart the complexity maybe they price w'd raise above 3000$, which is even worse.
900 seconds - when, Ricci, you walked to the predefined exposure times, after 900" it displayed "bulb" - which suggests to me you could expose 3600" if you liked. You just need to have a remote control to keep it open all that time. How does that work?
You also have an option called time .... currently I use time this option allows you to keep the shutter open for as long as u like I often do single exposures for 20-30 minutes in time instead of bulb. Bulb : press and hold closes shutter when u let go Time : press let go opens shutter closes and ends exposure when you press again however many minutes later
The 900 sec could that be added with a firmware to other cameras? ... What is the limit for them (Z7 or Z6 or D850) if it is not possible to give with a firmware update?
You can still shoot long exposures on the Z... the longest selectable is 30 seconds after that you have to use “Time” with time u can shoot for as long as you want Iv done 1hour and 2 hour long single exposures
Wait.. so does it have the 3d Tracking of the D500? Cause thats the one thing I really missed on my Z6. That was and is my favorite focus features of any camera.
Press "OK" on your Z6, place the rectangle over the object und press "ok" again. I know it is NOT the same thing and I have both cameras (D500 and Z6) here but it is better than nothing and holding up pretty good. NOT the same as I said but pretty good in my opinion.
@@Skaarah Yeah, I use that feature but like you said... Its not the same. It makes even more of a pain as Im left eye dominate and the OK button is a pain to use . I also dont like the process of acquiring a new target.
they should have 4k 60fps option to stay up to date . its seems already outdate for video being 4k 30fps . 1080p 120fps doesn't matter if 4k doesn't have 60fps option because if client want 4k music video and need slowmo in 4k will need to rent another camera. its like when i had D7000 and its got 1080p 24/30fps while others had 60fps option for 1080p . don't know why Nikon keep doing the same thing keeping itself 1 step behind . they should have go mad and give it all at once so people don't have to find anything else . and why no battery grip why they are doing negative stuff for negative publicity
1080p is more than enough for 99% of the clients ! You can always bump the 1080p 120fps slow motion image to 4k adding a bit of sharpness and no one will notice but indeed 4k in 60p would have been a nice addition in 2020.
What a great video, thanks a lot! Do you think Nikon will ever update the D850's firmware with the new extended exposure time feature? I'd love to have that.
Well there is two points that I am very disappointed with Nikon D780. One, why is there only 51 points in middle of viewfinder looking through the prism? To me that is old technology that is used for D750. I would have prefer 101 to 150 points over the entire. viewfinder. I do not use the view screen to take photos. I prefer looking through the prism, I'm old school. Two, how come there is no vertical grip for D780? This is game changer for me. A vertical grip with buttons reduces the strain on your right wrist and it helps photographer reduce camera shake, when holding the camera. So in nut shell, I will not be buying this camera until Nikon improves the camera over all. I won't hold my breath because Nikon is too stubborn to improve one of their professional cameras before it hits the camera market.
I couldn't agree more. And one more drawback I think is the fps for stills. The D780 has 7 fps, that is only 0.5 fps leap from prior version, D750 which has 6.5 fps. I think it will barely make any substansial difference at all. They should make it at least 8 fps if not more. And pertaning vertical grip, I think they should make one and add more fps from it, like the D850 which fps increases by 2 if you add vertical grip, so 2 in 1. I think D780 will be more appealing and justifying its price if Nikon does that.

What I find strange is that some people are criticizing D780 for having several benefits of a MILC. Would you rather have a DSLR without that? In the Pentax world, the Pentaxians have been asking for a K-mount K-02 MILC for ages, while Nikonians don’t appreciate the option of having an F-mount D780? A camera that can be pretty good in live-view with the old AF-D lenses? If you don’t appreciate that then you only buy new expensive lenses-in that case, what are you doing in Nikon world? I see no reason why they can't add the extended shutter speeds to older DSLRs too (besides touting this as a new feature and pretending it's tied to the new hardware in some way when it most certainly isn't - the D810A has it despite being based on an older platform). Same thing about the AF Fine tune.
To me, the D780 is a collosal flop, kinda like the 7500 and the DF were. Some people need a grip, without one it can hurt after long periods of time, plus if you shoot a lot of video, you're gonna be interupting the recording swapping batteries.

Agree with you concerning the battery life but the vertical grip is essential when shooting handheld with heavy lenses (even with an 1.5kg 70-200 f2.8), to be stable when shooting in low light situations, even when shooting horizontal (you can hold your camera with your four fingers).
