I own a D780 and I love it! I consider myself as an early adapter because I’m always looking for new things or new methods. Don’t stick to what you’ve done and expect to get better (if you do what you did, you get what you’ve done). And still: I love my D780! I have had a couple of mirrorless camera’s in my hands and I can’t get used to them: to small (though I have small hands), I mis the extra buttons, to light weight (and therefor an inbalance with a couple of my lenses), battery life, prone to a dusty sensor (the mirror blocks the sensor in that manner), etc. A friend of my switched to Sony A7 but regrets that and is considering switching back to Nikon DSLR. I could go on with this, but I won’t. To sum it up: I love the D780
Do you feel you are missing the battery pack/grip? I know the battery life is great but what about shooting portraits or using bigger lenses? Thank you
This is a very good camera for both stills and video and is a smart move by Nikon, especially for the F mount users. I tried out the D780 at my local camera store and the deal breaker for me was the mechanical shutter noise, which is about average for DSLRs. I do indoor dance and theater with my Z6 through the EVF using the quieter shutter. I am going to pass on the D780 and continue to build my mirrorless system for my specialty. This D780 is still a great camera and will meet the needs of Nikon's hybrid shooter very well.
We have to agree with that, the mirror slap is a definite downside with DSLRs when you put them against the mirrorless cameras with quieter shutters and silent shooting. It does offer silent shooting through the Live View, though that will obviously negate the OVF. As you say, it's a limitation of all DSLRs.
Nice video. I'm hesiting between d780 and d850(i have an opportunity to get a d850 with just 200$ more than the d780 that s why i hésitate) can you tell me on this year for wich one should i get? For wesding portrait and low light event. Thank you
I think for still photographers, the D780 is hard to sell. With the 2300$ price tag, there are no significant upgrades to photography. At the very least, they should have provided the 153 AF system to justify the price.
I’m a still event photographer, I somewhat agree. But, the dual card slots makes me feel a little less worried, and the option to add video or even have a more responsive live view is good. Oh, I own a Z6 too
@@EmpoweredForPurpose I tried both D780 and z6 for sometime before making a purchase. I felt the autofocusing system of z6 is still not on par with the DSLRs.. Hence got myself D780. P.S my time on testing both the cameras is very less and i might be wrong on it.
Why no mention of this camera's lack of integrated flash? The D750 had one which was very useful. I used mine to trigger other Nikon flashes and it was very useful as a standby if I didn't have a flash gun with me. I'm not complaining about the D780's improvements but it also lacks the ability for a base for vertical shooting. Very handy when I'm doing an awful lot of portrait work.
I've been toying with the idea of going full frame after cutting my teeth on an APS-C Nikon D5200 and I didn't want to go mirrorless, after watching your review I'm sold on the D780, I know it's been out a few years now but it still seems a solid good camera.
I only used a couple of lenses, but yes, there is noticeable focus noise picked up on the internal mic. We would assume that many people paying this much and wanting video will be using external mics of some kind though.
@@ppmagazine Thanks, good to know that! I used a Z6 with some Nikon F lenses and they are pretty noisy while on video-shooting. Even with a hot shoe mount external mic, I can still hear those noises. So I had to buy one expensive Z mount lens specifically for my video shooting needs.
@@leizhang7237 Yes, it's a product of so many f mount lenses coming before the video boon of recent years, where noice was never an issue. The newer lenses are basically silent, so it shows that it's a consideration for manufacturers going forward.
Of course for people with F glass it makes sense for direct mount shooting without adapters. The camera is jack of trade master of non but that’s what makes this camera so special. Sure today mirrorless has clear advantages…but for out door shooting dslr view is still the best. This camera has everything you need, it has better low light image quality than D850 and also even better dynamic range. The ergonomics feels amazing in the hands and body feels solid and reasonable weight. It’s too bad this camera didn’t come out 2 years sooner it would have gotten much more attention.
I would agree that mirrorless is the new dog, and it's clear that it's now at the point where it may be just outselling DSLRs, but I think the DSLR market is surprisingly healthy all things considered. I do think there are people who like to say otherwise for views, but there were about 20 million interchangeable lens cameras shipped in 2018. There was a drop of 24% to 2019, so let's say 15 million shipped last year (could very well be less). About 30% were likely DSLRs (very conservatively, and largely due to the fact that there were fewer DSLRs produced than mirrorless, it could likely be closer to 35-40%), which means there's still millions of people who will opt for DSLRs against mirrorless, even if mirrorless is the majority now. It will be interesting to see, and if any DSLR stands a good chance, this is as good as any.
if i were to get one i'd need a recommendation for a good 50mm lens to add, i've tried to loan a similar camera with the 50 1.4g but it was terrible wide open. pretty sure my budget can't go much higher though.
@@Alexxpb You can look towards the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, it's a very impressive lens though it's not as sharp wide open as it is at f/2.8 upwards, it's still a great option to explore for a reasonable price. Sadly, the truth is that they're all decent cameras that are a great first step into photography and capable of great shots. The best answer is try and go to somewhere that sells them, and get your hands on. The one that feels most comfortable in your hands is the one you should buy.

It's audible. You can definitely hear it through the internal speaker. However, at this price point, we would imagine a lot of serious videographers would be using lapel mics or off-camera audio, which negates the problem.
This is the best camera I was looking for, a marriage of both worlds indeed. But I came to learn that it is not vertical grip compatible which is really sad for me. Had it not been for this I would have bought it.
There is some very slight delay against the shutter button, however, compared to the normal delay you're talking about, it's virtually non-existent. In real-terms, when you press on the rear screen, ignoring focusing times, it's almost instantaneous on static subjects.
