- How do you design for people who can't afford to hire you? This is the question that drove Ben Uyeda to develop a revolutionary digital media business model.
Ben Uyeda has made a decision to publish his designs openly on the internet instead of patenting them and turning them into products. In this assumption-shattering talk, Ben explains why he gives his best designs away for free, and is happy to see people “steal” his design ideas to make money themselves. Watch to learn how Ben has co-opted the capabilities of big companies as his supply chain, crowd-sourced his R& D, and built a profitable company while ONLY doing the kinds of work he loves.
Ben Uyeda is a co-founder of the award-winning architecture firm ZeroEnergy Design. His current design venture, Homemade Modern, has reached more than 12 million people and resulted in his designs being produced and enjoyed on 6 different continents. His goal is to produce designs that are "desirable to people who have lots of options, yet attainable by those who don’t”.

I've been watching your videos for years now and have loved every single thing you've made. You inspired me to make my first visit to Home Depot and buy power tools. Which if you knew me in real life, you'd know that that is extremely out of character for me, as I would typically spend my money on more frivolous things. Now I value my small arsenal of power tools far more than I ever did my new shade of lipstick or eyeshadow palette. Your creativity and out of the box thinking has allowed you to reach millions of people worldwide and it's changed the way we think about affordable and practical design. Great business model and it paid off! I also share the values of creativity over profit, and I will use this philosophy somehow in my next entrepreneurial move. I also like the courage to step outside the box, and go without "peer recognition", inspiring. My son and I are constantly shopping at home depot for new tools and materials, and building cool stuff along the way, keep up the great work!

One of the things that I like about your approach is that gives people direct experience of how things can be made. Because your designs are based on simple available components and processes there is a high rate of success for people who may have little or no history of making things. Hi Ben, this is the first time ever i write a comment here on UA-cam. I just want to tell you, THANK YOU very much, you inspired, motivated and encouraged me to start thinking in designing /drawing and building things. I live here in Geneva in Switzerland, i still haven't chosen what kind of studies i should start doing, Seriously THANK you, i feel that i know what to do now... as a young 26 years old in a foreign country it means a lot to me. "and i have to do it in French as well". What you started will change my life and others as well. Wish me luck :)

This really inspired me. It's strange, I use UA-cam all the time for streaming content, but never had the idea to hijack the platform and use it as a marketing tool. I was wondering if you had any advice to offer an aspiring architect/interior designer/entrepreneur with extremely good ideas, but limited financial resources and a distinct lack of formal education like myself?
