    Thanks for the awesome info, unfortunately no video evidence of my bogging in the mudflats in the Pilbara with a rising tide. Once in a HJ45 shorty stuck traversing across a track n caught in the wheel rutts, walked to the main road n flagged a passing 4wd for a tow recovery. The second time @ Pardoo station, the ladies wanted to head for the water n said go left. I was not with the station briefing that said stay on the tracks, used boogey boards as Max tracks.

    If you ever get a chance guys go and drive down there. There’s a wonderful spot called Karri touches the sands.
    Huge karri trees have grown up in between these humungous monster sandunes and their top limbs go out and rest on the top of the dunes. Absolutely amazing. You can crawl out onto the limb and look down 150 feet to the ground and only be a metre from the top of the dune. Just stunning. Has anybody else been there?

    Are we hanging out for more of this sort of content? OH YEAH! While we have never been bogged in the 90 (90s are of course the best Prado off road LOL) we carry an air jack. While it is bulky, they are perfect for that sort of situation where you want to get the vehucle up in a hurry and get something under the wheels. We don't have a winch so for us the air jack is our fail safe for driving on sand. Loved this episode, I know this sort of content takes a lot more effort to produce but the end result sure is worth it.

    Nice scenery. Almost NZ style. 2:30pm! WAT? How come it took all morning to rip the Prado out? Obviously the tide didn't coming any further or the car would have been toast.....for breakie! 😅
    I watched another video recently (shot a few wks ago) where the guy thought his car was so good he didn't have to let his tyres down from their 50psi while trying to drive around a tight corner in very soft dry sand. He was towing a 14ft van with a 200 landcruiser I think it was. So of course he went straight down to the gunwales but did he let the tyres down? Nooooo, not until 4hrs later, way after dark! He said it was because he would have to drive with reduced tyre pressure in the morning to somewhere to pump up again. I felt like he should have been left there! But some Sth Africans came along and dug him out after 2hrs hard work. I guess they had a tyre pump as well cos he didn't have to backtrack the next morning. But has he learned his lesson? I don't think so because he still wanted to blame the sand and goodness knows what else rather than his lack of driving skills and lack of carrying a little tyre pump. Even if he had to pump up one at a time across 3 hrs. And we don't know if he even cleaned up the bogging site so others didn't bog there as well.
    You can go down to 8psi if you have to just to get out. Packing up to make the sand hard under the tyres at that low pressure is important before attempting to drive and having 4 max trax is a lot better than 2. All good hey? 😂

    Ron, a couple of things. First, you made a mistake when you pulled up after turning around to winch... you hit the brakes in sand instead of rolling to a stop so it doesn't form a sand ridge in front of the tyres. Secondly you obviously need to do a 1HD-FTE swap in your Troopy if you feel it's not powerful enough. Everything else was great though, good instructions. :)

    hahah funny stuff Mr Dahl...good whqt to do vid no doubt.
    your camera crew prado..has anyone thought of the elocker / atrac mod?
    its very simple...when low range and elocker engaged the front is open diffs...with the above mentioned mod..it sends a 12v signal to atrac to work only on front end..resulting in an absolute beast of a prado in most conditions...add a MM smart auto locker for the torque converter...you now have a 3.5 locked prado like the yanks do to the fj cruiser..
    1. rear lock
    2. centre lock
    3. torque converter smart lock
    4. front atrac
    with 12psi in the shoes the current late model prado will climb its way through almost anything with the right driver

  • @mrjackt-4wdtouringinwester769

    Tyre pressure is the solution. $400 tyre vs $80K vehicle. I'll go single digit pressures if I have to and I'll never give a rip about whether or not I might damage a tyre. Haven't yet, but 6-7psi has gotten me out of situations like this many times. Heck, you can even crack the valves and just let tyres go completely flat if that's what is needed to get to the dry sand. And that's why a compressor needs to be essential recovery equipment. If you can pump 'em back up, there's no issues lettin' them down to really low pressures.

    On sand, I would turn the stability control off but keep the brake traction control - at least on Prado 150, the computer acts very fast and doesn’t cut engine power so it will not hinder progress like stability control of road based traction control does - however it’s probably not going to help in this situation as it’s already on the axle … should stop straight away the moment you can see you lost progress. And yes 4 maxtrax comes in handy and that’s what I carry and so is a shovel and lots elbow grease…. 18psi is for “high way “ sand travel - 15psi or less is the starting point when low range is engaged and 10psi is what I would use to self recover

    • @PP-bm7zp
      @PP-bm7zp Рік тому

      If you know anything about 150 Prado’s you most certainly turn off traction control on sand, it hinders your wheel spin and therefore forward momentum very badly in sand.

    • @aron2199
      @aron2199 Рік тому

      @@PP-bm7zp spinning wheels = NO forward progress = bigger hole to sap your forward momentum when doing a reverse and "try again" = or dig yourself deeper.
      if you can go through with wheels spinning, you can go through without wheels spinning
      Toyota ATRACs (toyota speak for brake TC, not ESP/stability control-that should be off) does not retard engine power and does not over-intervene - gives a try next time with less engine rev so you maintain a constant speed and not spinning the sh!t out- work for me at the soft sand of Nagala rock unlike most of the tuned up 79s ripping the tracks out. You will be surprised !
      Prado 150 and 120 grande have a very good TC

    • @PP-bm7zp
      @PP-bm7zp Рік тому

      @@aron2199 thanks for explaining something I have been using on my Prado for 10 years, my point, which you’ve obviously missed is that in order to prevent yourself from getting bogged, keep TC turned off in sand, always. This will allow you to have more much needed momentum in sand. TC will hinder momentum by applying the brakes if it senses traction has been lost. Therefore it will slow you down in sand.

    • @aron2199
      @aron2199 Рік тому

      @@PP-bm7zp the Brake TC only applies brake to the wheel which is spinning and therefore no longer giving you forward drive on that spinning wheel - By doing so the Brake TC transfer the drive to the wheel which still has still have some traction left, a GREATER amount of drive than it otherwise has, propelling forward for longer.
      You decide the amount of drive you want with your right feet and the computer decide which wheel to send the drive to - almost like a LSD.
      at least on the prado 150, the system is not over enthusiastic on its intervention and in my opinion, work well in the sand.

    • @PP-bm7zp
      @PP-bm7zp Рік тому

      @@aron2199 you are missing the point, it’s not opinion based it is understanding how the TC works and that due to it braking individual wheels that are slipping and therefore hinders your forward momentum against the sand and eventually can get you stuck. Trust me, I have held 4wd training for my members over the last 10 years of owning the vehicle and many times around australia and this is the golden rule with the 150 prados for sand driving. Slow, rock crawling scenarios, the 150s TC in phenomenal, sand driving, always hold the TC button for 5 seconds to completely disengage.

    Apparently chlorophyll in potatoes can have deadly neurological effects when taken in adequate amounts. So if your potato has some green in it avoid it

    Whether this was staged or not I don't care. That guy was asking the same questions I had on my mind, and I learnt something. Thanks Ronny👍

    Useful I guess as a demonstration recovery but I have to agree with others that it appeared staged. The camera car drove off before breakfast leaving some of the camera crew to film Ronnie on the radio to the "camera crew" that for some reason, they thought they would take their Prado down by the waves. Also, Ronnie specifically pointed out the "no fires" sign before later lighting a fire... Sorry Ronnie but like the song by Regurgitator: "I like your old stuff better than your new stuff"
