Norm said that after he appeared on Letterman he realized how the talk show format worked. The host is in on the joke, the audience is in on the joke, and the directors, writers and producers are in on it. The only person who isn't is the "guest". You are the joke and play it in that way (bombing or else wise). This is the perfect example of two hosts who are overmatched and "not in on the joke".
