RV Sealant to FIX WINDOW LEAKS. Easy DIY

  • I'm going to show how to reseal an RV window & how I discovered this possible leaking problem in the first place.
    Those that follow our channel know that we are full timers, and I’m an RV, Motorhome maintenance freak. Being preemptive with maintenance and PM items is the way to avoid small RV problems becoming big and costly ones. I wanted to address this window sealant problem now, before it turned into a full blown window leak. This Step-By-Step, How-To, RV video shows how to remove the old window sealant and apply new window sealant the-right kind of window sealant-that will last for years to come. I’m going to also briefly discuss why we decided on the type of Motorhome Sunscreen Choices we considered and the Sunscreens we decided for our motorhome and how I discovered a motorhome cabin window seal seam that had old sealant and was beginning to crack.

    Martin, I was taught when caulking, to cut the tip at a slight angle, put long side of tip out, and push the caulk tip instead of pulling. Watch just ahead of the tip and you will see the leading caulk. This method also pushes it into the cracks a little better.
    Respectfully, Kevin

    Nice tips! I was in the RV industry several years, new and used. For safely scraping off old goop and putty I’d cut plexiglas to fit my hand, angle one end with a grindstone and voila scraper tool. Wears down sharpen up again. For cleaner I’d use acetone all the time. If the window seal was too ugly or evidence of leaking inside on walls I’d remove the windows, clean and butyl tape then crisscross screws on reassembly.
    A tip for anyone that has to go this far is never use the old style oil based putty tape (black streaks) when replacing. Use only butyl tape. Did this on trailers campers and some motor homes. Occasionally on a leaker it was good to pull the window because a couple of them had a rotted lower wood frame. A little tricky to dig out and replace but doable.

    One day too late! I climbed on the roof of my RV the day before you posted this video, washed it and applied a sealant to the front where the MH meets the cab of the Trend. First time doing any of this work. Painters tape would have been a great idea to use. I’ll remember that for next time. The job I did wasn’t exactly what you’d call pretty but I was proud that I did it myself. Thanks again for another great lesson!

    I have one tip....I find that when I cut the end of the caulk tube at an angle the material seems to flow into the area being caulked smoother than when I cut it straight and requires just a bit less touching up.

    I have found that using Transtar Acry Solvent on the old silicone sealant works wonders. It softens the silicone and it peels right off. I then wipe it down with acetone and then denatured alcohol to remove the silicone oils so the new sealant, I use proflex as well, sticks well.
    I am going to be resealing my windows and vertical seams soon. I will be using the tape trick. Thanks for the great info.

    A great video that will be permanently stored in my library and reviewed before each time I work on this area of the coach. Unfortunately, I had to do this last summer before this video as we had major leaks around the windows, but now I have this video saved as a much better way to do this. Our 'bago has the same windows and they started leaking like a sieve last summer. It's so surprising the poor job that was done on sealing these windows in the factory. Our's started failing after just 3-4 years! We found lots of puddles on the dash inside at the base of the windows. Seeing your approach to this I will now likely go back and have a "do over" on the project when it gets a bit warmer. Many great tips here. Can't emphasize enough how important this is for all class A owners that have this type of window. Thanks, Martin and Joanie!!!

      Yep there's a lot of shaking and rattling going on down the road and stuff just come loose. But your right, there could be a better way to stabilize and seal these window from the factory. It's just one those things RVers have to Pay to Play.

      @@RVstreet I see three things improved: your photography is significantly clearer and the angles you're using are absolutely better thought out. Your editing is tighter, with more attention to zooming and cutting in to insert detail shots. I think your lighting is better - using a reflector, maybe. Oh, and wind noise is greatly less than your earlier videos.
      And you lost the mullet! LOL
      I know this is a mundane subject, but could you cover how you handle trash while boondocking? I don't want to stash it outdoors, nor do I want it in the basement, and surely don't want it in the cabin. And ashes?

    • @RVstreet

      @@mikebrant192 And you lost the mullet!
      Mike that was NOT a mullet. I don't do mullets. It was long hair with a bandana or sometimes put in a ponytail. LOL
      But anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts on how my vid's are getting better. I really put a lot of time to not only cover the details but the things you mentioned.
      As far as the trash question...I don't have much input there because we don't do a lot of boondocking even though it is possible this coming spring. Just depends on what happens in the next few months.

    Your videos are great , thank you for all the work you put into them. You mention that you worked on your bay doors, which is an issue I’m about to tackle. Can you tell me which video would show that content? Due to health issues, I had not been to my stored Motorhome in 5 months, and for a 2020 Winnebago Sunstar model she now looks more like a 2000. Florida weather has not been kind to my RV’. We checked the bays out and only the front two passenger bays had significant dampness.

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Missy,
      Your 2020 Winnebago Sunstar is a nice coach.
      I didn't do a video on my bay door sealants even though I did mention it in the vid you watched. I did all those bay doors before we even started our YT channel, so no video. As you saw in the window sealant video, I showed how I taped off to reseal on the OUTSIDE seams of my bay doors. This is a PM item that should be checked about once a year. All sealants are an annual PM item. BUT...to address your situation living in Florida-which is very humid, lots of rain and damp all the time-if you have dampness or are struggling with dampness in a couple of bays do two things:
      1) Make sure you keep your rubber seals conditioned so the doors seal correctly. You probably saw that video....ua-cam.com/video/F5YSBrmuTCA/v-deo.html
      2) Buy a couple of DampRid Fragrance Free Disposable Moisture Absorbers. I have these on our Amazon Store under the Category named "Misc. Goodies". DampRid is at the bottom. They're cheap but help a lot. I also always keep one of these in my electrical bay too, to keep everything in there dry and especially my transfer case. Very important to keep moisture out of there.
      www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet
      NOTE: If any of your bays gets to wet or damp for any reason, get a small portable fan from Walmart, open the bay doors, put the fan in there and dry everything out. Then put a DampRid Absorber as maintenance. They last about a month or so. When full of water, replace. You don't want mildew or mold to develop.
      Hope this helps. Keep you chin up. All is good. 💕 👍

    Great tutorials.. I have a problem that might get costly if l don't fix it soon. Problem is that l don't know where leak is exactly. Sometimes my rug will get wet. I am guessing it's because my sliding door gaskets are worn. Rug gets wet especially when it rains hard but not always so it's hard to pinpoint the problem. How do you advise me to proceed so l can follow thru in a proper manner. Thank you in advance. Happy New Year's 2023 by the way Martin.🥳

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  Рік тому +1

      Ya, tracking down where water is coming in can be difficult sometimes. It's a process of elimination.
      Without seeing or knowing the type of rig you have, the best way to approach this is start with the obvious first.....the door gaskets. Then get on the roof and check all your seams, vents etc. and make sure they are sealed good. Also outside, running lights are notorious for leaking - pull off the lens covers and check sealant around where they attach to the RV. Window seams etc. Con't this process until the leaking stops. Stay on top of this. Water intrusion is the biggest enemy of RV's.
      Also pay attention to when it leaks. Does it leak when there's hard driving rain? If so that's a clue that it may be coming from under your A/C units which aren't sealing properly to the roof or possibly your slide seals. Hard wind driven rain can find leaks that otherwise would not leak.

Driverside wall was water damaged when i first bought it and they fixed it under warranty finally got it back 2 months later in time for 4 inch rain storm and i noticed actual water dripping inside from under the metal frame of the passenger side window now. The caulking around the outside of the frame looks incomplete down the sides and none underneath. I temporarily taped plastic around the window to deflect rain untill i can get it back in the shop. I came back this morning and read your comment again. So......it looks like you didn't type the wrong model# for the polisher. I looked on Amazon and there is in fact a Meguiar's MT320. I thought you we're talking about the polisher I carry in my store which is the Meguiar's MT300 model. The backing back I have right next to it does fit that one. I'm not sure if it will fit the Meguiar's MT320 though. But my guess is it probably will.
      Sorry for my misunderstanding on my first reply.

    Hey again Martin. What do you use to get the outdoor side wall outdoor sealant off? My class A motorhome exterior joints were sealed with geocel. What do you recommend that is safe for the clear coat? I used mineral spirits on a test spot and after letting it soak a bit and it dried, you can tell it munked up the clear coat a bit. Thanks for your awesome vids

      Hummmm....not quite sure I understand your question about *outdoor side wall*. Can you elaborate some please?

      @@RVstreet sorry i was doing voice to text....no good, so I'll try again BUT type this time.
      I have a class a motorhome that uses Geocel 2300 "caulk" to seal the exterior seems of the coach. I have a few seals that I need to remove the old caulk. Thor Motorcoach told me to use mineral spirits to soften up the old sealant so it's much easier to remove. However I tried using mineral spirits on a small spot and it took my coaches clear coat off the paint.... I was wondering if you use anything to make it easier removing old exterior caulk/sealant... I've heard some folks us wd40. Thanks.

      @@CatFoodDraino OH, Ok. Well I don't use anything to soften it up. I use a stiff, handheld, narrow plastic scraper to get the bulk of it off. Then I use a plastic razor knife to get the finer pieces. Then wipe down with alcohol. Tape it off with blue painters tape, apply new sealant then use thinner for my final smooth out. The tape keeps the thinner off the clear coat.

      @@RVstreet thanks for responding! Unfortunately this rv Pro Flex won't come off with Just a scrapper. I used gasoline last time and it seemed to work ok and soften it without messing up the clear really. You just gotta work fast and lots of quality papertowels. Tons of elbow grease taking this stuff off.

    So I’m going to be the guy with the odd question…what ladder are you using? Couldn’t find it in your Amazon store.

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  2 роки тому +1

      My ladder that I bought 5yrs. ago is no longer available. BUT...quite awhile ago I carefully picked one that's just like mine and it's 2lbs lighter than mine. I love the versatility of these types of ladders and there very solid and steady. It's in my Amazon Store in the "Everything on the Roof" category. I don't know what happened, but the link to it in my store appears to have changed. I've fixed it now.

    Was wanting to clean up my unit it’s got the chalk look it’s a 1996 Winnebago any ideas?

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 роки тому

      That chalk look is called oxidation. I have not done a full video yet on how to remove it, but I did cover it some in these two vid's:
      ua-cam.com/video/sB5S6zzRlpk/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/ewXghIetIw4/v-deo.html
      An RV will never shine again until you remove the oxidation. And to remove it you have to compound it first. Then polish it, then protect it from that point forward from the suns UV rays.
      There's also a ton of other vid's in this Playlist that you may find helpful:

    Do you have TPMS tire monitoring system on your towed vehicle? I have on my 34ft Monaco Monarch SE but need one for my towed Sunrunner. It seems the distance from the dashboard to the Sunrunner is critical. Any suggestions?

    • @americanrascal53
      @americanrascal53 3 роки тому

      The Blue tooth signals from some TPMS systems have distance limitations- especially in longer rigs. Its been a major problem for us and I have yet to resolve it. We're on our second TPMS system and we still can't get it right. There are TPMS systems (I'm not sure which ones) that offer signal boosters to help alleviate the signal loss issue that can be placed in the rig to improve the systems. Maybe someone can chime in here with the type they use that has the better signal quality and signal boosters? I have not yet found a generic booster that will work for all TPMS systems????

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 роки тому

      Having a TPMS on ALL TIRES (including towed vehicle) is my very most important thing every RVer should have and I have shared and emphasized that in many, many of my videos'. So I'm glad you asked so I can emphasize it again.
      If you'll watch this detailed video, I cover everything about our TPMS and yes the brand and everything I use is spot on and yes and I use a booster too. My TPMS has a booster separate option and yes at that length you need one. I never have issues loosing signal. A TPMS is one piece of equipment nobody should ever go on the cheap with IMO. Anyway I covered everything here. This will answer all your questions.

      NOTE: I always put links in the description text to purchase the products I use in every video. This outstanding TPMS unit, booster etc., is also in our Amazon Store under the category "Tires, Engine and Chassis Care" that you can see here.

    How do you seal taillights that get foged after a rain

    • @RVstreet
      @RVstreet  3 роки тому

      I re-sealed ours by removing the plastic lenses, applying a new weather strip from Hime Depot, screwing back on the plastic lens for a tighter fit. Then, I drilled 3, 1/8" holes in the bottom of the lens to allow it to breath. DONE.
