We started our debt free journey about the same time you did, we started March 2018. Sue and I paid off $136K including a PPL student loan and mortgage balance, credit cards and personal loans. We paid off my truck in December 2022 so it was 56 months to totally debt free. We went back and forth on the PPL but in the end we paid it off in November 2021, at that point we had the truck and two personal loans left. We went crazy starting Feb 2022 and when we paid off the last debt on Dec 6, 2022 we had about $2200 in our checking account and another $1000 in a savings account. Here we are 7 and a half months totally debt free and $32K between checking and savings. This is amazing for two reasons, first we always thought we could never be debt free and own our home free and clear. The second reason is we have way more savings and putting much more in our 401Ks than we ever imagined. Being debt free is an amazing thing!
Look at how far you've come! For the past 2 years since I've been on my own debt free journey, you have been a major point of inspiration for me. Thank you, Leila!
$2500 for all that travel, Leila!! That's amazing! Great job travel hacking. We used card bonuses to take $400 off our $2400 cruise we booked this fall. Pretty pumped about that! It'll be our first cruise, and we booked a balcony room.
This is really a very exciting video!!!!!!!!!! Love seeing the recap! In my opinion you are indeed debt free! But it does not matter what anyone thinks, it's your personal finance so do whatever feels personal right for you (and it does indeed makes mathematical sense!). Looking forward to future updates on how your investment and FIRE journey is going. You can do updates every year but maybe an idea is 2 times a year: once on your birthday and once at the end of the year. That's how I do it for myself (my birthday is also 11 july), and it's fun to do it on your birthday to know how far you are by age, and once in the beginning/end of the year because I yearly budget and I take into account the fiscal year for that.
That makes sense, I hope you are doing well. Just a little question; In case you are in dept or for the general savings goals; How do you think it would feel if you would reach this goal?'
Not sure when I subbed but in 20 or 21. I have enjoyed you and your journey … practical, analytical, creative. Not leaving you, just this journey as are you.
CONGRATS! I will be debt free by next year and your journey is encouraging. I also have the full amount of my student loans in high yield savings until i absolutely HAVE to pay them off
That is assuming a LOT about particular people. I actually KNOW what it's like to be Debt FREE (Will be 1 full year of FREEDOM in July 2023). I think it's disrespectful to say that it's something when it is NOT! Be honest especially when 'teaching' people. Debt FREE means NO Debt! If you want to have a large savings and use the earned interest, say that, and NOT that it's Debt FREE.
Those who discourage this are afraid she’ll be tempted to use the money elsewhere. Maybe she gets laid off, economy completely crashes, somebody convinces her to use it for a wedding or to buy a house or invest in a business, her car dies, she gets sick, etc. Once it’s paid there’s no turning back on what you spend the savings on. You all probably already know this better than I do!
We’ve been saving up our student loan payment money into a HYSA to earn some interest as well. Like you said, there’s no penalty to not pay the loans yet, so you may as well earn some interest off of that money until September rolls around.
Congrats on unofficial paying off student loans! Ur just leveraging student loans saving fund- rich ppl do the same thing. I guessing u made $1800 in interest from high yield acct🧐
