I'm not spending $30 a week on coffee out. I'm not spending a single dime on coffee out. I make a pot of coffee in the morning and I drink the free coffee in the breakroom at work to hold me over. I can't imagine "limiting" myself to $1400 a year in Starbucks' coffee. 🤔
It’s amazing how much we can cut our consumption without really affecting our standard of living. Like, I did not know coffee table books or needing to rotate home decor (aside from holiday decor) were a thing before I started watching frugal living videos where people say they’re giving that up.
It’s true! Consumption habits are very personal and therefore different among people. For me, I really enjoy the process of designing a space but it can get out of hand if I’m not careful haha
Towards the end of 2023, I made a list of 24 things I would not buy in 2024. A lot of it was fueled by the fact that we had so many duplicates of these items already and the thought of bringing yet one more just seemed absurd. Socks, candles, makeup, more than two streaming subscriptions of any kind were several of the things on my list. I'm keeping a journal of my "fails" as well, so far I've only had one what I'd call fail, so I'm not mad. I have to keep reminding myself that I literally need nothing at the moment.
Love this! I didn't think I needed a low buy year, but reading your list it's so true that I don't need to buy more makeup, yet it's still tempting when I see people rave about a specific product.
@@TheClutterLady YES! It's hard with so many influencers out there showing all of this stuff. It makes it so tempting, I'm hoping my list will keep me accountable if nothing else.
I keep reminding myself of failures too and learned what I truly need and what not❤ for example I had a lot of stationary and learned to the reisst buying new cute stationary
With so many "buy now, pay later" options, I know a lot of people who buy beyond their means, including myself I am afraid to admit - your tips are exactly what I need to hear, thanks!!
I put my husband and I on only two Starbucks a week. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. We order one Triente iced coffee with no ice o, cream or sweetener. We take our own creamer and cups of ice and share the single triente. This has been a huge savings plus it is a date for us and our dog gets to go along which he loves. I also only buy used clothes except underwear. No home decor, no candles until I am totally out, and I only read books from the library. I’m really thrifty.
Ugh candles! They are my nemesis 😂 It’s like an addiction and I have to force myself to put it back on the shelf and walk away. I almost bought one today 😅
Wow that sounds like me, I quit social media as well. And I did some internal reflection and I was impulse buying because I was bored so I’ve been going on a walk almost daily and it’s been helping.
Yes, walking has been a game-changer, it gives me so many benefits - gets me moving, physically, energetically, and this helps my mood, and definitely reduces boredom - the more I do it, the more I enjoy it!
Thinking of quitting social media. I think makeup use to be a thing… now one face cream, mascara, lipstick and a blush. In my purse so always with me. No more stuff. Have reduced my inventory of stuff like crazy, clothes, kitchen gadgets, utensils, junk drawers, decorations etc. . I do have a salon so social media is kind of essential for that but even so I’m seriously thinking about it.
Can you add the social media response as a responsibility for the person that does the scheduling of appointments for your salon? Then just add a calendar reminder for you (or her if you totally want hands off) check in on comments and feedback. Maybe download a social media for salons content calendar and have her follow that as a guide for posting.
You need only two fancy dresses: black one for evenings and funerals, and a light color for weddings or fancy brunches. Get a solid color, classic fit with a great cut that flatters your figure. That’s all you need!
I have a room full of expensive art supply, yarn, floss, quilting material, gemstones, fabric dyes, and more; pristine not out of box. I fancy myself an artist and creator for years so I bought and bought. This year I decide to use my stash. I want to break out watercolor paint, cut into exquisite fabric, string beads, and using embroider hoops and floss. By the way I also have a bedroom full of clothes shoes handbags and jewelry, too; many never used. I am not buying any of these items this year either.
It’s wonderful that you have so many things to try out! I’m also starting to embroider this year, and do basic sewing with my new machine. Sounds like you have plenty to keep you from spending money this year 🥳
So exciting! I started watercolor in 2022 and LOVE framing them to use as art around my home. My first ones were definitely flops, but I love most of my results now. Hope you get to enjoy what you create more than all those unused products. Plus the process of being creative can be fun, relaxing, and give a great sense of accomplishment.
I’m loving this topic! I’m on a no-buy until May (which should be easy since I’ve done no-buys for 1-3 years at a time!) The only social media I use is UA-cam but one has to be careful here too! 😅
Love to hear it! Good for you, what a great annual challenge to do 🙌🏽 I agree, I actually touched on that too in my ‘social media free’ update video recently!
Since I got pregnant I haven't highlighted my hair. Im going to be home for 3 months so really no need to get my hair done then either. also I probably just need some cotton shorts and tank tops to wear around the house this summer, that's it. I haven't bought a candle in forever since I don't burn mine much bc my husband complains about the smell. we have a rental that's not our style so really no need to buy any more home decor since it's not gonna look good in this house anyway. I'm going to be using lily and fox nail strips instead of going to the salon. I've only been to Starbucks twice this year and was shocked by how much the price went up. And not buying any extra makeup if I haven't used up what Im already using
I use a Cerave tinted sunscreen mixed (cause it’s too dark for me) with regular Olay Complete moisturizer with spf 30 instead of foundation. My skin is protected, and will look younger over time.
I have 4 boys and when they were babies I would buy their clothes from goodwill but only the items that were on sale for half off. And I would sell the items they outgrew to pay for their new clothes ( well new to them). Also it is great if people that give you baby clothes at your baby shower, they get you items in different sizes so then you will have some of every size. My mother in law would always get my boys clothes at thrift stores and yard sales and they were all different sizes and for different seasons. Also one of my husband's cousins past down a bunch of baby clothes and some other stuff that her baby outgrew since she had her baby so many months before I had one of my kids.
I’m on a 30 day social media break and feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I’m more present and in tune with myself so I don’t feel like I have to fill a void in my life with more material things
We always make coffee at home but the boba prices are insane… for a while my husband and I were treating ourselves to boba left and right but we cut down and it has helped so much… health and for our wallet. 😅
In many ways, I have a hard time SPENDING money...especially on certain things. We don't have debt and have been budgeting all 6 years of our marriage. But there are other things I could definitely benefit from going a year without buying. We have so many candles! It's hard for me to resist buying them. But I want to use some up before getting more. So I lit a few candles after watching this video. 🥰 I used to have the same problem with journals, but now if I buy them, I just give them as gifts. I still have fun picking them out and they are more likely to be used by someone who doesn't already have 10 unused plus 10 half-filled notebooks. 😅 Thanks for this video and good luck with your low buy year! I may do a low buy quarter? I like the process of evaluating purchases and being more intentional about it all!
You’re amazing! I know sticking to a budget and avoiding debt takes some serious effort. I tend to not light my more expensive candles so they just sit and sit… I think I’ll light one tonight too 🙈 I love the idea of journal shopping but for other people! If I get useful items that I already have I save them to use as gifts 🎁 Goodluck with your lowbuy quarter 🥰 would love to hear from you again when I post an update on my progress!
I am planning a trip to Japan next year with my friends and I knew I needed to fix my spending habits- to save for it. I used to hate listing things that I bought because it always makes me feel guilty but it actually helped me saving- because it makes me guilty 😂. I don’t shop a lot, but when I do, I tend to overspend. So I had to re-evaluate my spending, mainly cutting down on take-outs. I’m only two months in but there’s been an improvement and I still have a long way to go. Even if the Japan trip falls through, at least I still have my money. 😂 I will have to unsubscribe to a lot of shopping websites though. And for the socmed- I just removed them from my home screen to reduce my time on them. I can’t really delete it as it’s my main way of connecting to my friends and family overseas.
So true about the social media part. When I open instagram, always feeling I need this, I need that. Which basically just another stuff I dun often use/ or even dun need it. And those stuff are normally FREE sent to the celebrities from the brands for posting them. So I will use less instagram. Thanks for your useful tips!
I need tips on getting my spouse on board. It sucks when you're doing your best and making huge strides, but the other half of your household is doing their best to clutter the house and keep you both in debt!
I see how this can make the challenge more difficult! If you’re sharing finances maybe you could find some sort of agreement in running bigger purchases by each other first? As for debt, someone suggested to me to make it “fun” by creating a progress chart - if it’s out in the open maybe it’ll motivate/remind your spouse of the end goal! Hope this helps a bit ☺️
Loved this video, thanks. I would say to others though, that no spend really shouldn’t be combined with decluttering heaps of clothes. Just cause you don’t need good clothes and work clothes now, just means you will need to buy more in the future. Food for thought. Xx
Just b careful w/shopping 2nd hand for baby clothes. In the area I live in S.C., I can purchase brand new baby clothes at Target or Walmart for what they were charging at Once Upon A Child.
That’s so unfortunate! I guess it depends on location. I haven’t come across any questionably high prices at our OUAC stores - but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on!
Seriously starting about thinking starting a low buy for the foreseeable future starting today. I’ve had some weekends where I spend too much or on others that can afford it, and I need that money for debt repayment!!

Hi Nicole, I get where you're coming from! Getting past the "keeping because they're good quality/brand" was the hardest for me. I need to see these frogs in little outfits asap!!
I didn't own a car from 2013 to 2020. In 2020 I "inherited" my mother's car (we needed to stop her from driving before she killed someone.) It failed to pass inspection this past summer so I am without a car again. I have only 3 pairs of shoes, for work, for everyday walking and for church. And i am planning to buy my 3rd bicycle. My two existing bikes cost around 5kusd each. And the 3rd will be around 3K usd. 😂
No Starbucks, or alcohol - as I don't craze it anyway. I stopped buying fresh flowers every other week. Just on special occasions. No clothes, no shoes or home decor. No skincare or makeup--I have enough already.
How are you saving money this year? 💸
unplugging appliances when not being used or at bed time
Im failing at this 😩

It's wonderful that you've seen such a positive change in your spending habits since removing IG and FB. Food deliveries might be a toughie to quit so abruptly. I'd love to hear how that goes for you!
