Moog Source - Tour and noodle

- I thought we would take a closer look at the Moog source. Intended to replace the MiniMoog Model D when it was released, Moog music made some interesting decisions of what to add and what to leave out. The very early days of Digital being added to Analog Synths leaves some amazing yet questionable features :D
If I have run across a Source back in the 80s, or even the 90s, I would have bought it on the spot. They are so cool looking! And I love the sounds that come out of it too!
Indeed, they are gold! Once I have the few nigges with this one fixed I'll do a compaison between The Source and the Mini - D :D
@@100ThingsIDo Awesome. I'm looking forward to that!
Play keys with your Right Hand. Press any button and control a knob with your Left Hand. Its amazing this simple layout didn't get copied more. Left hand on Pitch, Modulation or Any Option.
I think roland tried with the Juno Alphas but it was too much menu diving for people by then :D
You do great overviews Mike. I look forward to the teardown.
Thanks! Teardown should be a few weeks from now! :D
Thanks! Looking forward to more videos on the Source. I've owned mine since 1986.
Wow, I think the only instrument I have left from back then is 2 of my guitars :D
❤❤❤👍
Great vid! I still have mine from the early 80’s!
Thanks, indeed The Source is a keeper :D
Great overview. Love mine. I modded it by adding CV inputs for OSC2 and the VCF. Opens up a lot of tones there.
I've always been tempted to do something similar but I mostly try and keep the synths "as is'' ... Sync on the Model D would be nice though :D
ooo that sound at 20 secs is glorious! I laughed at the subscribe edits 😆
hehehe keep trying new things... didn't make much of an impact but I'll try a few more over the next few weeks :P
Nice review.
Thanks :D
I learned synthesis on my friend's The Source back in 1986
Really great synth, such a good layout for learning :D
Awesome
Thanks :D
the arp sequence O_O oh yes
Soooo much fun :D
Isn't the Source more of an adapted Prodigy than Mini? I'm somewhat always amazed at how good the user interface is for a single data entry knob (or maybe the cute looks or amazing sound are just deceiving me there...).
With the current daft prices of a Source I'd probably more tempted to spend twice/three times the price for a polyphonic version, The River by Baloran which absolutely nails the sound.
The Prodigy was based upon the original Model D and the Source is for all intents and purposes a Prodigy with digital control. So everyone is correct.
The Prodigy and Source analog schematics are very similar. Probably the main differences are in the ADSR arrangement. The Prodigy uses a dual NE556 timer based ASR whilst the Source generates both ADSR's via code and D/A conversion. Source LFO is also generated in code. Prodigy has no Noise source whilst the Source derived it's noise digitally using a dedicated Noise IC (now just about unobtainable) the MM5837. The cycling you are hearing is due to the way the IC generates noise. It is not a true random number generator but rather cycles through a set of random numbers. The cause of the loop noise is either the IC is failing or the capacitors in the analog filter part of the noise circuit need replacing. I recently sent you an email Re: the Source so if you need some help with your fixing, sing out =)
Phew! I hate it when I get something wrong :D
@tim_buck_too I will try and get the photos's when I do the teardown/filming in a few weeks :D Thanks for the info on the noise, its always sounded like this on my unit so just the way it is.. Hopefully won't fail any time soon! :D
I can imagine the Source in nice remixes / new versions of some of your YT Album tracks. They are all great & every track deserved more attention! But that's another story... . anyway, The Source on "01 Leap" or " 02 What clip is new clip" - I would buy all :)
I really need to remaster most of those.. I just keep putting it off for some reasons. 'What clip' really overhits the compressor from memory :D
@@100ThingsIDo In my car they really all work fine, on headphones like beyerdyn.DT 770, I didn‘t check it yet, but: it‘s my best album buy to enjoy in the last years.
If you find the time to make new versions or remasters of tracks, maybe with a 24 bit-option (nut not necessary), I will buy it again, no joke. If you want to move forward instead of rework the (good !) things, it will be 100% again, I‘m sure. O.k. enough written ;) Thumbs up, bye !
Was this not the source for New Orders Blue Monday?
As far as I know it was :D
Got A Minimoog but this other sounds great!
Indeed, I was originally going to sell The Source when I got the MiniMoog but they have a very different sound surprisingly and decided to keep it :D
@@100ThingsIDo yes definitely sounds way different to a Mini but both are wow
Ah yes, the "Source" of an old love hate relationship...pun intended
haha! Let me guess.. the touch surface ? :D
