I bought one of these at a garage sale for $10 about 20 years ago it is in great shape and plays great.....AND I WILL NEVER GIVE IT UP!
well fuck me!
now I'm depressed...
lucky sod
JillSaphic I've had some lucky buys, moog mg1 $75, moog sonic 6 $45, arp solina string emsemble $45, 1966 fender mustang $240, rhodes stage 73 $200 et al. the biggest "got away" moments that haunt me, RA Moog minimoog $ 200, Arp 2600 grey meanie $700
also had moog taurus II pedals for $200
well... I did get my little phatty for a good price, so thats something.
JillSaphic how much? Id like-s to get 5-8 of the slim phattys or waldorf pulse's.... if I can get the right deals..
I just looked at my mixer and - doh - I have a roll of American Recorder "console tape" which I use to mark the channels when recording - I just used it on the SH-101, works like a charm - now I can get the Disco Bass with one hand only - excellent! Thank you for the tip :)
This is from 1981. The price currently looks between 1k and 2k depending on condition and how badly you want one ;^)
I doubt it. Arcade games of the '80s had their own sound chips built in and they were crude-sounding - the typical "8-bit" sounds. It simply wasn't possible or economically feasible for the technology of the era to incorporate a Moog synth board inside, or store "real" recordings of it.
***RESTORING FACTORY PRESETS***
For anyone wondering (since i just spent 30mins myself doing this) If you want to reset back to the factory presets - as shown in the video above - you must do it manually following the settings that are in the back of the owner's manual (downloadable pdf).
I quite enjoyed doing this.
Fun Tip: Hold down a note while you do it and you can hear the effect of each parameter as you're adjusting it back to the original patch!
So you don't have to load them in via a cassette tape?
Very nice sounds and songs. Congratulations.
That's a great album. I used to listen to 808 State a lot in the '90s
:-D I do this for historical purposes and to "go back in time" for new / young synth lovers who weren't around in the '80s - so they can experience the synth as it would have appeared by going to try it at the music store when it came out (a couple of the factory presets are actually good). At any rate, I'll be (hopefully soon) using the Source to make a cover of Blue Monday, so that one will definitely have *that* bass :^). "Touch my bass, Rebecca! Touch my f**king bass!"
Great demo SM !!
Beautiful looking and beautiful sounding !!
For all the design enhancements over the Minimoog which were supposed to go into place here, the Source is first and foremost a Moog synthesizer.
Great watching you edit the Electro patch and using the different buttons with the edit knob.
Thank you much
There are some VAs that come close, but yeah, I agree that it's almost impossible to emulate the "quirks" of the original analog systems.
SynthMania nothing comes close to the source
Thank you :)
Grazie Paolo!
The fluete sound awesome. Could hear it all day long
..
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
damn, that is one clean moog source!
Will do :)
Amazing really, that the difference in quality is so apparent compared to VA synths of a budget nature. You'd quite literally find it impossible to sculpt these sounds on anything not analog. It looks bloody awesome too what!
"On everything"? There's no reverb, only echo in three-four patches that benefited from it.
Welcome
loove that flute
Thanx
I used to own one of these but got frustrated with the fact that you can only edit one thing at a time thanks to that big knob! It does have some lovely sounds but the lack of real-time control on anything more than one thing at a time (you can't change the cut off as you open the decay for example) in the end drove me to sell my The Source. It had the original manual, box (very rare I imagine) and what made me smile is the section in the care and maintenance pages where it read "always apply regular coatings of linseed oil to the walnut ends and extend their life and keep them looking healthy". What synth has that in a manual these days?? It also has a nice little sequencer but not seen that used much on UA-cam.
It does have a few marks but yes, overall it's in great shape for its age
Yea, the Source has some limitations, but the base sound is true Moog. Definitely one of the best analog monos out there, especially with the ability of the sequencer changing key in performance - a VERY useful and rare feature
Electro house synth sound should be a song have you done it yet? this time add in some drumbeats
If I remember right, the SH-101 can also do this - just tape down the "key transpose" button. I noticed you didn't do that for the videos where you had 101 sequences.
One of my touch keys (I believe it's the #7) is stuck closed and make the whole thing useless. Anyone got at suggestions for how to fix this? I've tried heating it with a hair dryer and it will work properly until the spot cools and then... #7. Thanks!
Very similar
Sounds great - I don't think the horn sounds like a horn, but that is what makes it great anyway :-)
:-) the beauty of analog
great video/ I realised that my copy of trill voice was wrong and also Lead 1
It seemed liked a good idea at the time... but those membrane buttons have all the charm of a cheap microwave or washing machine! But this is the only original Moog with memory, other than the Memorymoog. The Minimoog Voyager and later synths have memory, but that was a product from the resurrected new Moog company, and that was from 2002 on.
The Source and the Memorymoog are not the only "original Moogs" with memory. The Satellite, Minitmoog, Polymoog and Polymoog Keyboard, Taurus, had memory in the '70s already.
Hi, can you post the factory patches as download?
I'm almost certain I've Heard some of these tones in mid 80s arcade games. Anyone know if this synth was used for such things?
Yep, they are maybe the best Acid House group.
That's true :) but the tape idea is genial, I usually held it down with my right hand while playing "disco bass" lines! I gotta try this! But don't want to ruin the surface of the synth with the sticky glue from the tape.... I should use that low-stick white "art" tape perhaps?
Which one is the Andy Fletcher setting?
patch 3 used on don't go by yazhoo?
Their albums ex:el and Gorgeous have complete gear listings in the liner notes. If you had a copy you could check to see if it was used.
Can i get those presets in .wav or in .sf2?
I've got IK's Sample Moog and non of the samples for the MOOG Source contain these presets which is a real shame cos these sound great.
I love your playing!!! its kinda obvious that you play in a bluegrass/jazz band and as a church organist ;)
3:09 best sound I think!
Maybe you heard some similar sounds from the Commodore 64, where the SID chip produced the music. That was a 3 voices synth-on-a-chip, with digital oscillators producing the classic analog waveforms (square/pulse, sawtooth, triangle and pseudo-random noise) and an analog multimode programmable filter for shaping the harmonic content. Exactely what happens in analog synthesizers like the Moog Source, minus the digital oscillators, which in "proper" analog synths are actually analog.
And the guys that made this chip later founded Ensoniq and used the same technology in the esq1
@@Johnsormani Yeah, Bob Yannes, inventor of the SID and later founder of Ensoniq.
Bonus sound reminds me of Olympic by 808 State.
nice fx, i wonder what the synth sounds like with no fx on any preset...
Very interesting and instructive ... give us MORE! :-)
I can't believe they jumped on the membrane keyboard train. What were they thinking?
Are there only fifteen presets on it?
16
How many is that polyfony of kind of monophonic or what
Monophonic
7:40 = Tekken 3 Arcade OST ~ For Hidden Characters
If only I was quicker to decide in my Moog quest, I could have had a Source...But I was soured by such a little quirk as the lack of env-to-pitch-for-sync. :(
where can i get one of these?
In your backpackets ya mos got there
Ebay only $2000
7:40
What's the intro song?
Listen to the beginning of Yazoo's "Don't Go" and I believe he's doing a similar riff to that.
UKMikey and if I'm not mistaken he used an SCI Pro-One (which is a very similar design as far as modules/arrangements are concerned. the prophet 5 it is based on was based upon the minimoog)
beautiful sound
Which external FX unit where you using on certain patches please?
I don't remember exactly - judging by the sound perhaps it was the Lexicon MPX1 here.
@@SynthManiaDotCom OK, cheers. It sounded great. I have a Lexicon MX300.
Can you demo the sequencer please?
I don't have a Source at the moment, but plan to get another one.
@@SynthManiaDotCom oh really? I am looking at one on ebay at the moment...
this kinda sounds like the crumar bit-one
Kinda 1981/2
Is this vintage? Btw how much is dis
