      @nickhodgeUK  Рік тому +1

      If you have a GS it’s tough to beat the Varios. Bear in mind however if you intend off-road then soft luggage may be an option as few others will survive that weight being dropped on them over and over. If you look at a GSA then they, in my opinion, look best with hard luggage, and I was very pleased with my Bumot ones 👍🏻

    When I had my varios I used Wunderlich bags which were perfect, for serious touring my present Bumot set up has a lot more capacity and is more practical. I use Kriega inner bags which are expensive but so well made and are in effect a suitcase.

      Hi Jonny you’re right if there’s one to leave off it’s that as the panniers opening sideways means the bag contains everything. Just my dealer had a deal on the set which almost made it a no-brainer. Hope they work for you and ride safe

    • @hectorvara750

      Jonny P, I ride in So. California and rarely use my side varrios as I don't like the extra weight when I am driving locally. I use the top box almost always. It contains my first aid kit, water bottle, small tool box and some cleaning supplies and books for the GS. I frequently 'white line' or split lanes in the LA traffic so I don't want the extra width of the bags as well. Best to all.

  • @mikedignum1868
    @mikedignum1868 5 років тому +1

    Nice video Nick. I have a cheaper inner bag version at the moment, but I don't normally use the top box bag as it limits the space i can use. My top box carries my waterproofs /spare gloves/tool & first aid kits (anything I need straight away) Right-hand box carries overnight stuff and the left carries the rest of my clothes. This layout worked well for me on my last tour of Spain.

    • @nickhodgeUK

      Mike, nice point on overnight stuff, maybe I can sort mine into that until I have one as laundry later in the week? ;)

      @@nickhodgeUK I got some good tips on packing and laundry from RiderCamTV on YT. What i do now is carry a tube of laundry type soap and wash the basic stuff ( that dries overnight) in the hotel every two days, and that keeps the dirty clothes down to a minimum.

      Mike Dignum Mike. What length tour is this? I did 9 days (8 nights) to Scotland and actually never needed to wash anything. In fact came back with some clean stuff. Thank you Nick, very good. I have the GSA and use Bumot panniers with inner bags, which as you say are invaluable; I much prefer metal panniers that are top loading as opposed to the varios which are side loading. I also have a Givi top box that takes two helmets; I don’t have any inner bag for this box as I like to keep it light, due to it protruding beyond the rear wheel. All the weight of luggage, in my opinion, should be over the rear axle. Cheers, Andy.

    Great video thanks. I used to have a GS with Vario luggage a few years ago, but can't remember if the larger pannier when extended, would also hold a helmet, because if you have a passenger, their helmet will need to go somewhere if they don't want to carry it around when off the bike. Can you help with that please?

      I have a small Wera Tools pouch with relevant torx bits and a handle. I use the 3M Dual Lock (don’t buy cheap knockoffs). Wipe inside of pannier with medical alcohol or similar to degreaser and apply two 1” sq patches. Then see the other half to the tool pouch and it’ll work fine. I have just returned to the bike, 1986 I stopped. At the time I was on a ZZR 600. I have just completed a back to biking course (loved it) and bought a BMW 650 GS Twin. Could you advise what Wera Tools you carry.

      @nickhodgeUK  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Mark. Glad you’re back. Take one small piece of advice. Ride it as the said at the back to bike course not how you did in ‘86 🤣. My most useful wera tool is a green handled interchangeable bit driver. It takes 1/4 hex bits and I have an array of short and long bits it torx (10, 15, 20, 25, 27 and 30). Hex (3, 4, 5, 6) and a 1/4 drive socket adapter with 8, 9, 10, 11, 12mm sockets and a 75mm extension. All that fits in a small pouch and will undo most panels. I then have a few larger torx (30, 35, 40 and 50) for the larger, tighter stuff 👍🏻

I think his site was under construction last time I looked but he is a seller on eBay under the same name and once you’re in contact he’ll supply almost anything sticker wise (the beak and ones on my helmet are from him too). Hi Nick. Why didn't you transfer the Vario across to your GSA? They look so practical. Everyone is telling me to get tin boxes for my GSA but they must be a nightmare to filter with no?

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 роки тому

      Hi Andy. There’s actually a multitude of reasons. Firstly, the ‘deal’ I did on the part-exchange included luggage (and crash bars) so I’d have needed to buy them again. Second, the GSA would have needed all its framework removing to fit them. Next, I think the GSA just looks better with more rugged boxes and lastly, certainly when the Varios are extended they are at least as wide, maybe wider than my tin boxes. In both cases (no pun intended), the cases are no wider then the handlebars so you have a ‘guide’ that providing you’re not turning bars to get through and make no silly angle movements, the boxes will follow. I would say there’s pros and cons to all luggage. I loved my varios but the side opening can be an issue but equally the fact you can get two lids is a bonus. Now here’s another rub. Soft luggage is growing in popularity for sure and if I was doing a long trip where some could be unpaved. I’d consider soft for two reasons. 1) they don’t go out of shape if/when you inevitably drop the bike, 2) I had a ‘slidy’ moment on last year’s tour on a muddy track and your reaction is to bang a foot down. That drags it under the box (I recovered it) which hurt the back of my calf (not serious but you get my drift?). That’s a looooong answer. Hope it helps 👍🏻

    I’m dying over here lol. I’m getting the knock-off bags for $175. I have all 3 cases but the Topbox is way too small. What’s a good option for like a 45L topbox on a GS?!

    • @nickhodgeUK
      @nickhodgeUK  3 роки тому

      Hi Dave. You should not lose sight of the fact that expanded you can fit two full-face helmets in top box and left pannier. Few metal ones do (check out my review of Bumot panniers for my GSA). There is also mention of the large Givi Outback top box there which DOES take two lids, but it’s HUGE. In my opinion it looks ugly so I’m very happy with my Bumot system and never been short of space and I find the top-loading of the panniers (and inner bags) much better than the Vario side load 👍🏻

      Hi Gabriel. Yes of course although not with the liners in. Packing on a bike takes careful though whatever. If you have the aluminium ones then stuff is inevitably at the bottom!
