I think the thing that would potentially really rub salt in the wound for all this is the fact that even after these acquisitions, most of the studios now under Xbox have yet to put out a single game as a first party dev. Some have turned out smaller stuff like Grounded and Pentiment, and this year the slate was actually looking pretty solid with Avowed, Indiana Jones and Hellblade, but we're still waiting for what's next for id Software, Arkane's Blade, anything from the new ABK developers, and especially whatever's going on at The Initiative who's doing Perfect Dark. If they pivot now, midway through the generation at the point where results were actually starting to show from those years of buying up publishers and studios, then the window that people who were fully into Xbox expecting exclusives from first-party is about to look pathetically non-existent. Worse yet, it would basically mean there are no disadvantages whatsoever to just jumping over to PlayStation if they're promised day one PlayStation titles and most of the upcoming Xbox stuff if what is to be believed comes true
Microsoft ended up not being willing enough to see the transition all the way through for a lot of their developers in that case and I think it would suck. I was actually kind of looking forward to this year's slate as someone with both a PC and a PS5

I play on Xbox first and then exclusives on PS5/Switch. I think most Xbox players don't care about SOME games going multiplatform. We're worried that if they have zero exclusives that they don't have a reason for dedicated hardware to exist, and that they'll switch to streaming focused devices for Xcloud. RIP to our libraries that we've been building for 20 years that are still supported through backwards compatibility.

There isn't even any incentive to get gamepass either. All the best backwards compatible games that they know you want to play are still $20 per in the store, their first party exclusives other than Forza for the last decade have been generally complete ass, Halo Infinite is completely free to play so you don't even need gamepass to play it, etc. For being "the best deal in gaming" it's about 1000 games that either you've probably already played or don't give a shit about.

    • @y_magaming9798

@librarygary1618 that's a good point. I didn't even think about that. To further your point you don't even have to pay full price for the good backward compar games because they're constantly on sale. That's how I get all my games. Now that I got the x I don't even have to buy the digital copies I can pop some of my old disc and not even have to worry about it.

Said it before, I'll say it again Gamepass is not sustainable and not good for the industry. Microsoft has a lot of money but they wont allow services to keep hemorrhaging money. Remember they stopped reporting on numbers of subs for Gamepass and thats because the numbers plateaued and arent rising. They also overpaid for Activision Blizzards but at the end of the day they devalued the practice of buying games. They taught their own audience that you dont have to buy games when they release. So rising costs in game development, number of subs not increasing and their first party games not selling as they are available to play day 1 on Gamepass equals people above Phil Spencer looking for more sales.

    • @Zynnix
      @Zynnix 9 місяців тому +5

Even without Gamepass you don't have to buy games when they release. It's just FOMO that compels people to. In the Canadian market for example games have been absurdly expensive for the past decade I feel like, and the way to combat it was just to wait until around the holidays when all the major publishers discount their games by $30-$40.
I can understand if you're still young and feel like you need the hottest newest thing right away, but that's not the reality for a lot of people who are content to wait and have other responsibilities in their lives. For me and others around my age, Gamepass is a great value because it meant we didn't even need to wait for those sales. Is it damaging to the industry? The data certainly seems to point to that, as you've mentioned, but it cannot be denied that it was good for the end consumer which is a rare thing to see from a multi-billion dollar mega corporation.
If Gamepass goes away, I'll adapt as I always have. I mean hell I still have games on my Steam wishlist that I'm waiting to drop below $10 on a Steam sale and I'm stubborn enough to not buy them even at $11.

      Xbox Game Pass made
      2.9 billion $ in 2021
      3.9 billion $ in 2022
Phil Spencer said 1 billion $ went to third-party and independant devs from Xbox Game Pass.
And Xbox probably keeps 30% of the subscriptions fees as they do on each thing they sell on the Xbox Store. (ie 1.3 billion $), to keep the servers up, to market the offer, and to pay the people that run the service.
So it lets 1.3 billion $ a year to Xbox Game Studios.
With the FTC trial leaks, we know that TLOU 2 cost 220 millions on 3 years of development, ie less than 75 millions a year.
So if Xbox Game Studios plan to release 4 AAAA with the same cost every year, they need to have always 12 (4 AAAA x 3 years) studios working with a 75 millions budget a year each. So to do that, they need 900 millions a year.
It fits perfectly into the 1.3 billions Xbox Game Studios can get from Xbox Game Pass revenues.
And games sales aren't event counted.
So Xbox Game Pass offers 2 important things : profits and game funding with money already collected that games don't have to refund within the month of their release.

My take on the Xbox situation is that I understand how Xbox fans feel and in no way do I disregard their complaints but we live in an era of gaming where every company is competing to take up the consumer’s time. Releasing games everywhere is the best way to gain the most revenue and user base. The only worry from this happening is Microsoft stops making hardware and everyone loses their digital library and/or Sony getting more complacent and starting to increase prices to astronomical amounts.

Exclusives are the reality of the console landscape and Xbox fans should feel a sense of betrayal by this news. The lack of communication or clear strategy by Xbox leadership has been evident for years, and fans who have stuck with them should be frustrated by the future vision.

Imo this whole mess shows how Gamepass is not sustainable and they need to start recouping money from sales on other platforms, the subs have stopped growing for almost 2 years at this point iirc and i think they said it was around 15% of their revenue, these game companies make most of their money from the split they get by selling 3rd party games and MTX.
Xbox is already having trouble selling their consoles, if they start porting their exclusives to Playstation there is even less value to their consoles, that means even less hardware sales -> less potential Gamepass subs and lower 3rd party game sales wich in turn make 3rd party devs skip their platform entirely because of low user base/low sales.
Even if they only put their games on Playstation after a year, from a Playstation user point of view that means that they only have to wait one year and after that each year will have both Playstation and Xbox exclusives to play, its a no brainer.

So either they need to exceed the performance of a gaming pc at the same price or have a cheaper console. A console for $600+ would be a hard sell.

    • @MrKryton24
      @MrKryton24 9 місяців тому +15

And a lot of game news outlets / UA-cam doesn't cover how gamepass has been slowly introducing a worse system for gaming under the guise of "it's the best deal in gaming!"
Any and all subscription services have started as a good deal and slowly ramped up to giving you less while costing more. Every streaming site does this (most notably Netflix atm), ps plus has done this late last year, and gamepass itself has led already to game quality not being the focus at launch but trying to push games as a service for first party titles from Xbox.
The big picture here isn't pointing to just Playstation having a potential monopoly (because Nintendo has exclusives that are rock solid too still) but more to the fact that the games industry as a whole is getting worse all across the board. Removing ownership of games, increasing cost of games, increasing MTX seen in games, the attempt at making live service games more prevalent in the market, the attempt at pushing NFTs in games etc.
I mean shoot all streaming services have increased ads and commercials by a crap ton does anyone remember when they started there weren't ads at all and now we have to pay extra for less or no ads lol. Thank god Introducing ads to video games has been almost entirely shunned and disallowed to date. I especially was happy to see the way they tried to introduce ads in SF5 never resurfaced again (so far!) and they had to walk that back entirely.

Gee, if only millions of people had told them for the last 10+ years that they need to actually make good games that people want to play! Now even PlayStation users are turning their nose up at the prospect of being able to play Starfield because its just mediocre.
They can keep trying to ignore the quality of their product and keep selling gimmicks and "new ways to play" but at the end of day, they can't keep getting away with putting out such trash for such a long time.

They all interrupt, they are friends, and their energy and enthusiasm is why I tune in --- some of the very best EZA content has been interruptions.
Anyhow, I watched the whole episode here and there weren't any pointed interruptions that I can remember, perhaps leave some time stamps to enlighten me?

Rename Gamepass to Xbox and release it on everything. So even if you’re using Gamepass on ps5 you’re playing on Xbox. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can already stream gamepass games on weaker hardware. Just need a decent connection.
