I planned a two day, overnight trip in to a super cool place but when I got to the access, people had already beaten me to it! I needed a Plan B quickly and so drove to another river and tried to salvage my foiled plans.
A cold, misty start gave way to a stunning day and tough conditions in an already tough river. All I needed was one fish to make the day and that was going to be a challenge..

I splash around as much as I can and throw rocks at the fish when they aren't looking. Then move to a new spot.
Great video! I can definitely relate to having to move on from a fish. Had to do the same just the other day after standing for an hour casting to a single fish and changing out nearly every fly pattern in the box. Multiple refusals later I had to call it quits. Eventually you just run through everything in the box and the only thing left to do is salute them and move on. Glad you were able to get one to the net!

For me, just being Out There is 90% of the reward (which is just as well, if you fish like me). Questions: How come those cheeky birds are so tame? Do you ever see small (normal) sized fish, or do they emerge, you know, full grown? Loved it, as usual, thanks!
They just have that character about them. You find the odd small fish and see them around but I don’t seem to catch many. Maybe coz I target the bigger fish more..🤷♂️

Out here in Montana….watch your vids all the time. Question. With such a long leader/tippet…..do you use any kind of indicator. You seem to lift as the fish moves to your nymph. Comment pls. Love “The Dope” Some now on the way. Cheers
Sometimes I use and indicator but it’s situation dependant - sometimes an indicator being anywhere near the fish will spook it immediately

You know I’ve tried your links for a few things such as the lanyards, Orvis Pro lite Hunting trousers and the lanyard link don’t work and the Orvis one just don’t have any stock. I’ve hit the US,NZ and OZ distributors but alas nothing.
Can I ask for some advise too Cobber? I’m wanting/ planning to fly over from Oz for a few weeks, can you recommend the best time of year productivity wise. I’m guessing it would be either respawning or in Summer with insect hatches.
One last one, ever tried a Hardy’s ultra lite X NSX rod? They’re super fast action and deadly accurate. I tossing up between one and an Orvis Blackout.

Heya Alex…that fish called Dick….been there lots of times myself…where you go through all your options…Big Stoneflies to teeny weeny nymphs….even playing ‘dirty pool’ with a sweet Wiggly Worm…to no avail. What’s that all about…are they zeroed in to just one particular thing…bluntly refusing to accept anything else??
Maybe Locked in on something, maybe a drag issue, tippet or something no one will ever know. I really don’t know - part of the fun of it all.😬
