    Turn your pressure way down when spraying thin stains,you lose a lot in overspray.
    That color really is nice,turned out great.

    Mike, if you're going to use this kind of stain for future builds, think about getting a 5 gallon bucket, should be cheaper in the long run.
    Great job, doing well.

    That respirator that you are wearing is a dust respirator. You need to wear a vapor respirator when you are spaying a oil base stain/paint. Of course you are outside so the over spay won’t be as bad.,but if you were in a enclosed room you would definitely want to wear a vapor respirator. All I have ever used is a Crayco airless spayer. I used to paint houses for a living. Interior and exterior. Water base and oil base.

    I like the sprayer it looks like it really speeds things up. It's good that the wood is soaking it up and the stain is penetrating the pine. You might want to consider a heavier duty protection for your breathing. I just purchased a face mask with disposable filter cartridges that can be customized to the job you are doing.

      I have one for mine and it makes a tremendous difference. Not only does it keep you out of the overspray but you can easily paint ten foot ceilings while standing on the ground. I've had my X5 for over five years and it's definitely a game changer when it comes to painting. I bought mine to paint the house that I and my family built but mostly used by my son in his construction business. You can control overspray by using smaller tips like one starting with a 4. Just take the time to study and understand the tip numbers.

    Morning sunshine. Maybe pressure is a little too high for the overspray?

  • @MartyM_33
    @MartyM_33 4 роки тому +7

    Mike, next time you spray start with the pressure at a very low setting and work your way up until the spray tails (the little dots on the edge of the spray fan) are gone. You’re losing a ton of material to over spray. 2 gallons should be more than enough to finish the whole building. That’s a great color. I hope my recommendation helps and I’m speaking from 16 years experience.

    Small tip....when spraying rafters....throw a thin sheet of 4x8 plywood on top....move easily with where spaying.....consierable less overspry

    • @2blackdanes
      @2blackdanes 4 роки тому +1

      Charles Marshall overspray is overspray, it just becomes stain on the plywood with your method and at some point it will start dripping on you . I don’t see the overspray being a problem in this situation. The entire structure is the same finish. May be helpful if you’re trying to keep it off other surfaces but a major time sucker to keep moving it to keep up with your work flow. It would be easier to use a roll of plastic.

    You can cut down on waste by buying different jets. 2 in. 3,4,6,8. spray widths. Also couple different length extensions. Also a swivel just behind the spray tip, you can adjust different angles so you're not contorting your arm. Also the paper mask is not enough. A partial respirator for solvents. I ran 2 units for 25 years. Good luck

    Nice to see the shed with color. Also interesting that although not everything you have is the same asI have, but I have been using Stihl products for over 20 years, I bought an Ezmark mower at the end of last season and now you got one, I am looking to buy a Kubota BX23S as soon as I can and now you guys have one, and then the surprise, you pull out a Champion generator. Although it's newer then mine, I have the same model I bought about ten or eleven years ago for camping but it ended up being used for power outages around my house. Looking forward to seeing how that Grayco sprayer works for you over future projects. Till then Have A Day.

    I think you will find yourself buying 5 gallon buckets of stain. Not sure if your model has a second strainer in the handle? Just an FYI If you do any paint products with heavy solids in them, make sure you remove and.clean that strainer as well. We painted houses with Graco sprayers years ago and followed the sprayer with a 3/4 Knapp roller. Very quick application process, and evened out the paint very well. We did 1 barn with stain, board and batten style, rolled all the open areas and followed up with a brush on the corners. Great work on the wood shed. You will be very happy with that sprayer.

    I had an X 7 years ago. You could slide a 5 gallon bucket under it. That was before You Tube and for some reason I didn't have a quick guide like that. I blew paint in my face while priming twice, loaned it out once and it came back full of dry paint. Two things I NEVER do now. I never paint or stain and I don't lend tools!

    I would strongly recommend picking up a hooded Tyvek suit ($20 on Amazon) as well as a pair of cheap plastic safety glasses the next time you use it. Getting that stain/sealant all over you is probably not the healthiest option. And agree with everyone else, looks like you had way too much pressure. A few more uses and you’ll get it down.

    A couple of questions from a novice. Can you comment on the cleanup process. How do you clear the stain out of the feed and sprayer head? What was the bucket of mineral spirits for? Are you using it to dilute the stain to improve flow? Finally, how is the application of stain different from paint? The simple answer may be links to Graco videos that address these questions. I have never used a sprayer which is the reason that I am asking for basic information. Thanks for your video !!

    Y'all should point out that the machine is not wasteful. The waste is just part of spraying open work space like the joists and other framing elements. The spray method probably took less to stain the solid areas like the walls. Just my opinion.

    Love that stain color. I spent a lot of years spraying in my body shop. Relatable information. Get a 3M carbon based filter mask with rubberized housing for a good fit. They are in the 20 some to 30 dollar range. Even better yet is the full face mask covering your eyes as well. I need a paragraph to explain all of that.
    When spraying it is best to edge out the work surfaces first. When you go all around the edges it frames the job, and then you can focus on doing the flat surfaces evenly. Done effectively enough it would all but eliminate the brushing, at least for the most part.
    I had mentioned that on the header/face panel (You are a perfectionist like I am) you would need to brush a certain area away from where you stopped with the brushing because the sprayer is not going to give you the option of going up to that line finely. It would create a second coat situation which would result in a much darker overlap spot. From the video yes it is a much darker patch. Whether it dries closer to the rest or not is to be seen. One way to correct it is to roller or brush a second coat across the entire header and stop finely along that edge so then everything on the header would have only one second coat. (Where it is overlapped you do not coat that again.) That header is your header. It is the marquee spot on the shed so spending such a little bit of time to make it even makes sense.
    So yes edging out first, and then combining the ideal head for spray pattern, and being able to focus on overlapping the coats will give you the technique that you yearn for. Perfecting the spray head size will enable you to cover a good sized area without too wide of a spray pattern which wastes a lot of material into the air. Have to play with it to find the sweet spot. When edging out I noticed others advising you to get an extension, ideally you don't want an extension for edging out when the area is easily reachable, but extensions of course are great for big flat areas that are harder to reach.

      The clean up is pretty simple after you have done it a few times. It is really easy for latex paints because water is your cleanup solvent. You just have to factor in waste which is the biggest draw back. It works great for big jobs with a single color but it gets tricky fast with multiple colors or small jobs. Like everything else, use it for what it is intended for and you will enjoy it.

    You need to add thinner to the stain which helps with the soak in to use less stain . Why are you using a ladder you got an extention for the sprayer.

    Fantastic job Mike and Melissa, sure does a great job with your sprayer, once you get the hang of it there will be less loss of stain. That’s a pretty cool tool for your arsenal 👍👍. You’ll be filling up the wood shed real quick. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

    Love your channels. Used a sprayer for my privacy fence once, gave my green truck a nice red hue from the over spray blowing in the wind. Nice mess to clean up and a lessen learned.
