    Years ago when putting cedar siding on a shed I was told to nail or screw one side of the board. Leave a small gap between the boards 1/2 inch then screw small strip 2-3 inches over the two boards with longer screws not in the first boards. This will hold both boards down. This will help with expansion & contraction it will also help or eliminate board splitting.

    Mike, from an old barn builder, one nail or screw in the center of green sidin. It' will shrink and two nails or screws will cause splits at one or both of the nails. Leave a quarter inch gap between each board and add a one by two or three as a batten over each gap with one screw between the boards with the screw going in the gap. Leave the batten a little loose so each board can shrink and slide under the batten.
    Love your channel and usually watch on the smart TV. JOHN

    *When I left the military, I built a hotel in Belize by the airport just outside a British army base. I wanted to build an attached outside bar about 4k sq ft with a rustic look with lumber. There is no softwoods to speak of so it was only mahogany. All the construction was with green lumber as you can't get a nail through it when dry. The outside walls were board and batten to compensate for the massive shrinkage. That method handled monsoon season just fine.*

    Don't forget hurricane ties on each end of the rafters. And dip the siding ends in some preservative. Those ends will wick water spashing from rain in no time. If it was me, I would put that front overhange at least 24". It's so nice having that much more protection from wind blown rain. I have 2' overhangs on my covered front porch and I still get wet decking all the way to the house 12' in from that overhang. But it helps. Hey we are getting ready to put Alaskan Cedar down our our 100hr old farm house front porch that is 51' from end to end. The boards are 2" thick, 8" wide and 20' long. Taking them to a mill in a week to get resawn into 1" thick. The joists are 14" on center to help with the thinner boards. I have 10,000lbs of boards in my garage waiting to get used.

    Ann wanted me to tell you that we took your advice: We got out and did some work on the property yesterday; cutting a lot of wood and pulling grape vines down from out of the trees and hauling them up to the road for the town to take away. The trees have been down on the ground now for a couple of years and are rotten so not good for firewood or milling. That battery powered chain saw is amazing! Oh by the way, this has always worked for me: When in panic, when in doubt, run in circles scream and shout! Will you be putting battens over the siding joints? In two years the wood will have dried and shrunk opening that joint to at least a half inch. Ah now that you have more time at home can we expect more videos? Especially now that you have two more sets of hands to help out. Great video M&M, thumbs up.

  • @addisongardner1989
    @addisongardner1989 4 роки тому

    All that green framing lumber should dry uniformly and not be a problem. Siding may end up with 1/4" spaces between boards, but that will provide ventilation and promote firewood drying. Maybe deck the roof with 1/2" CDX ply instead of something like OSB. Only thing I'd add as a possibility -- since you're running your siding vertically -- would be to install some diagonal, 2x4s between your posts (or nailed to/across the inside faces of the posts) at the rear to stiffen the structure against heavy winds. Maybe corner brace front posts, too. After that, shed seems like it'd survive a direct nuclear strike.

    Thank you Morgans for the thoughts, meanwhile, there was a tree in the pond pointed out by Melissa when she went walking. I look forward to watching it being pulled and later processed. Thanks again.

    Make sure you keep some logs for Melissa to mill also. The girls will get 3x the work done than Mike can in the Evening.

    Mike , when you put a wet wool shirt in the dryer what happens ? It shrinks ! So when wood shrinks would it be tighter around the nails or looser ? I've used green wood for every thing framing ! I had to take it apart , what a job . Just fasten it solid & no worries ! Rule of thumb 3 nails in a 1/6 , 4 in a 1/8 5 in a 1/10 6 in a 1/12 then it will not curl on the edges !

    That back beam that will hold the roof load, use HeadLOKs instead of regular screws - they replace lag bolts.

    You guys are great! Gotta love the positive attitude you both have. Does Hunter go out and help, like stacking wood. I remember one time you had said something like once he starts something he doesn’t stop until its done. If you and the ladies get started stacking, that pile would be done in no time.
    Keep up the great videos. The Morgans and a cup of coffee, a great way to start the day!

    As a carpenter and official arm chair quarterback I would have loved if you would have framed a beam along the back like you did the front for the rafters. Its not too late in the years to come youll be glad you fixed it.

    Great video. Time to teach the kids how to do some of the things they don't teach in school, like balancing the checkbook, household maintenance, etc. Have a Day.

    Mike, I like how you can custom cut dimensions of your lumber. Where can you buy 3 1/2x 9 inch beams, that is totally awesome!!!! So much enjoy watching your building projects!!!!

    i cant imagine the satisfaction of going out on my own property cutting down a tree milling it into lumber and building a building without having to rely on going to buy lumber. it must be very satisfying.
