I use to be a painter doing commercial buildings. If anyone is wasting paint it is because they don’t know what they are doing. I can’t speak on behalf of this machine as the stuff I worked with costs thousands. But regardless remove the tip and start the priming with water for first use (as mentioned by others) pointing the gun into water. Then once paint starts coming out keep it pointing in the water for a little or put the gun into the paint bucket until water is removed. Then put your tip in and start spraying. When it comes to cleanup the same process but in reverse. Put the pump hose in water and remove the tip on the gun and spray the remaining paint into the paint bucket. Then when water starts coming out stop and put it in another 5 gallon bucket. Yes these are quite a few steps but surely just part of the process with owning a painting machine whether it cost a couple hundred or thousands.
Hi. Happy to hear your comment. Is like your advice, please. I just invested in a house fixer upper. I'm to do small projects. I'm not a painter at all. But time is a thing. I'm looking for something compact, inexpensive, does a relatively good job, no overspray! Thanks in advance
That little machine is the best. I used it to paint a huge fence and it didn’t give me a single problem. Some people just give you to much nonsense when they put up reviews. The little machine literally brings a manual with all the information you need. I used oil base stain and it work amazing. I recommend getting the extension for the tip which cost about 30 dollars and it will make the job a lot easier
Your comment gives me confidence to tackle painting my board-on-board fence. I am 70 years old and don't need any extra problems when taking on this project. Looking over several other videos and community comments on this particular machine, I'm certain this is the one I will purchase. I'll be pressure washing my fence first. It is several years old and I've never applied any type of paint or stain to it. I will use a solvent-based stain.

just finished spraying a 400sqft deck without any waste, you dont have to prime with water first, I primed straight from my 1-gal bucket without issue for 6 hours....after the job, I moved the nozzle to a clean bucket of mineral spirits and water....and cycled it through. This is a great sprayer..
This works. I used Home Depot semi transparent stain, 502-redwood. I tried to use a roller on a big deck. It nearly killed me and I didn't get even one coat. I had to stop. I bought this sprayer and another 5 gallon bucket of stain. What a difference. I didn't prime it as well. I bought the extension. I was done in about 2 hours. I could have done much more. Then I cleaned it all up. Waited a couple of weeks for weather and did a second coat. That's one nice looking deck. The tips I put in water for over a day. I had two of them. A 6" and a 8" Water, lots of water. Then I used gravity to drain the water out of the hose by pulling the trigger. Used my fingernail to get any other stuff off so it looks nice. There was a bit of wind and it got on the extension line and around the orange protector. Get it off now or it's there forever. I plan on using it for interior painting.
I have this sprayer and painted my entire house with it, interior and exterior. My only feedback is that I recently purchased the Wagner 130, and I like it better. It's just easier to clean.
Just prime the pump with water, then run paint. No need to fill the hose with water. As long as the pump circuit(pickup tube, pump, discharge tube) is charged it will draw paint. The only time you need to push water down the hose is for cleanup.
You don't have to prime the system every time with water. They recommend that for the first start up to remove manufacturing debris and contaminants, but after that, you prime the system with your strained paint. If you are having to use water to start up every time, you aren't cleaning it good enough.
So if you just removing debris and contaminants. And going to waste paint to flush out the water anyhow. Why not just use that paint to flush out the contaminants?
Best explanation I've seen so far. I especially liked your explanation of how to save paint ( paint is very expensive after all) and the different sprayer tip sizes. Will be purchasing this unit soon.
It won't hurt to spray some water into your paint It will spray better thined out a little bit. If you want your tip to last longer don't use it when cleaning, or starting until you need to use it
Get your self a whip when spraying small projects. Whip meaning a small in length hose like a 4’ hose. This will Eliminate the amount of water you need in the house. In fact you could dump all water then prime whip with paint. A smaller hose like this won’t take much paint to fill the hose up.
Definitely would have saved me a 1/4 gallon of paint or more last weekend had I watched this before spraying my house. Thanks for the advice and the great tips. I really enjoyed my x5 and don’t see the need for a bigger sprayer for just a diy sprayer to be used once or twice a year.
I have two of them and they have way outlasted what I thought they would have lasted for. A great tip when using these is to put the pickup tube in a 5 gallon paint strainer and tape it up high on the hose. This acts as a pre-filter before it goes into the pump. I do this because the only filter on this sprayers is in the spray gun.
Mine stops spraying after a while. Stays runnin and I have to reset it a few times. Is awful. I wonder if this happens when the paint is low in the pail.
Just got it!! Was working great for 3 min. Did great on 1 wall. Then it stop shooting and engine stayed on. Re did set up. And within 10 seconds same crap. Stops spraying and engine stays on.
I have had that happen when I first got mine. It was almost always because I skipped a step. Make sure you have the pressure set at “start” and not any higher, you can slowly raise the pressure until paint is flowing out of the sprayer. Also, a step a lot of people forget is the prime button. Just flush the machine with water and start over. I remember being frustrated with this at the beginning. Hope this helps!
Did you strain your paint? It will stop spraying if the tip clogs...can happen alot if you don't strain first. Just reverse the tip direction , shoot paint into a bucket for 1 sec. turn tip back, continue spraying. If the motor stays on the pump isn't primed, just turn knob to prime wait for prime return, go back to painting.

You can repaint a whole kitchen. Just make sure you are using the right spray tip. I would use a 311 tip for spraying cabinets. If you are painting walls, I would use a 515 tip.

If you take a lunch break etc. how do you keep the sprayer from drying up? Will this spray Ben Moore Advance trim paint with the 311 Tip (which I think is a thicker interior latex paint) ? thx for the video and tips!
I wouldn’t leave paint in it very long. If you are going to take a break from painting you will want to get all the paint out of the sprayer and run water through it to make sure the paint doesn’t dry in the hose, spray gun, or the pump.
So far it has been fine as long as you run mineral spirits through it after oil paints. Just make sure when you spray your project the new paint material is the only thing coming out of the sprayer
You can do it during clean-up. Remove tube from paint and put in water. With machine off and in spray position, pull the trigger pointed into your paint can. Keep holding trigger and turn machine on. (Tip should be removed or in unclog position) keep spraying until water starts to come out, then finish clearing the line in a waste bucket.
@@rogeliovazquez8087 according to Graco you can spray water-based and oil-based non-flammable architectural paints. Just make sure you clean the machine with mineral spirits.
You're doing it wrong. Pull both tubes out of the water and let them drain fully before sticking in the paint. You can prime with both hoses in the paint. Almost completely gets rid of the water problem.
You never run your sprayer with the suction tube not in paint or water. Watch the manual Graco provides when buying any airless spray rig. You'll tear your sprayer up. And you dont waste any paint if you just follow the instructions. Theres videos theres an instruction manual. It's not that hard to watch a video or read the instructions
If I were a professional painter, I'd just buy a shorter hose to waste less paint and have a longer hose for projects requiring more mobility. Stupid idea?
TOTALLY AGREE. This thing is a piece of shit for any kind of smaller project. Cabinets in a standard home would probably only need a gallon of paint. This pile burns through so much paint that is wasted. Plus if you stop for even just a couple of minutes the thing starts to spit and sputter. Just shit! If you want mine I'll give it to you for 50 bucks!
People hammer down cabinet jobs all day with the X5. Maybe your paint tip selection and paint viscosity is off a bit. Maybe not cleaned good from prior use🤔 You need a sedative. Calm down

Graco Paint Sprayer 🤟
Can I run exterior paint thru a 311 tip?
I have never tried, but give it a try and see what happens. I have ran some pretty thick primer through it and it works fine.
How does one go switching from oil to latex?
So far it has been fine as long as you run mineral spirits through it after oil paints. Just make sure when you spray your project the new paint material is the only thing coming out of the sprayer
Great video thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
What is the best pressure with a 311 tips high or low pressure
You've got to trust your instinct.
What’s the unclog position?
It’s when the black tip of the gun is pointed backwards.
Nice thanks 🙏
Can I use it for lacquer paints
No, lacquer will melt the hose. You need a HLVP for Lacquer.
Would be cool if they could figure out how to pull the paint back out of the hose when you are done spraying.
For oil based projects you should use mineral spirits.
You are correct! Thanks!
@@Ben.Builds. can u spray oil base with this x5??
Can you spray oil base with this x5??
@@rogeliovazquez8087 according to Graco you can spray water-based and oil-based non-flammable architectural paints. Just make sure you clean the machine with mineral spirits.
@@Ben.Builds. wich ones are non- flammable paints?
So what sprayer is best for those smaller projects and or cabinets?
I would use an HVLP sprayer or the 311 tip on the Graco Sprayer
How do you avoid spreading on the ceiling as your painting the walls
You can use a paint spray shield or tape and plastic.
@@Ben.Builds. thanks so much
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Cycling material through any airless is the same procedure, its no reflection on the X5.
Thanks for your comment.
Does this pump have a filter?
Yes
@@Lady_Hiccups it has a filter on the pump? Or just the gun? If so, where?
@@MrC9Oh3 both. Filter on the intake tube, and 1 inside the gun.
@@Lady_Hiccups that's a screen/rock guard on the intake tube
@MrC9Oh3 OK. It still filters out chunks from getting in line. If I go to buy one online, it's labeled as an inlet filter.
Point the spray gun back into the paint bucket. A hose full of water in 5 gallons of paint wont dilute it much//be fine. Thats how i do it.
That’s another great option!
@@Ben.Builds. Unless you have put in storage oil. Then u flush into a bucket
How much India
Not sure about that.
What paint did you use for the cabinet doors?
I believe is was white enamel from Sherwin Williams, either Pro Classic or Emerald urethane.
But you will get a better finish with a white lacquer
If that makes sense?
I’m not sure on that. Interesting idea that’s for sure!
You forget talk about the filter in the gun!!???
You don’t need to run water through it every time. Silliest thing I’ve every heard. Been a professional painter for 30 years
Thanks
Every airless sprayer requires you to pull water in after painting with water-based paint.
Your complaints are not valid, you run the water out without wasting next to any paint. Great sprayer period.
I'll take it for 50 bucks!
People hammer down cabinet jobs all day with the X5. Maybe your paint tip selection and paint viscosity is off a bit. Maybe not cleaned good from prior use🤔
You need a sedative. Calm down
I use this on cabinets. It works fine.
...UMMM....UMMM
after a year his workshop wall is still NOT painted!
Is Ummmmmm in the dictionary..? I mean English dictionary!! Fn irritating.
Nice comment. Really helpful
It sucks
What kind of problems are you having? I haven’t had any issues I couldn’t fix.
