    Żurek (sour rye soup) is often served in a bread. Look for "żurek w chlebie" in Google Graphics. That tomato sauce on zapiekanka was probably ketchup ;) Ketchup is very popular topping among young and middle-aged people in Poland. A good way to know Polish cuisine could be also a visit in bar mleczny. It's a type of bar with cheap, typical Polish food. But it's good to go with a native speaker cause the service probably don't speak English.
    Oh, and I hope you ate pierogi? Every Pole and every foreigner in Poland loves pierogi!

      It is a waste of totally good bread to serve soup in a hull bread. It is neither traditional nor Polish. Polish people has always treated bread with dignity as it could have become a scarce food, so not even a crumb got wasted, let alone thrown away like it is the case with a soup served in a hull bread (what happens with the inside of this hulled bread??? what happens with the bread after you are done with the soup???)

      Well that's because our neighbours invaded us every opportunity they had and erased us from map of the World for 123 years, moreover after 2nd World War Russian kept us under "iron curtain" for additional 44 years decimating our national goods and treasures. In long story short you can assume since 1795 a.c. we are existing for 50 years (21 which splits WW1 and WW2 and 29 since we took communism down) Beside in polish store u won't find that you are looking for because it's manufacture. If you want really good polish food u have to find someone with polish roots or actually a pole himself :)

      @Rex Waldron
      Unfortunately Polish cuisine like other Central European cuisine didn't develop until later on, most the cuisine was basically meat (game), cereal crops, fruits and berries. This is not because they were stupid but because of their location and weather, ingredients weren't available or rare. Most of it's current foods are influenced by Lithuanian, Jewish, German, Hungarian, Italian and Armenian cuisine, though this is highly disputed and controversial since due to communism unfortunately it is very hard to distinguish the exact location of origin for many recipes enjoyed in Eastern and Central Europe.

    • @bernova
      @bernova 6 років тому +50

      @mackjeez
      You are misinformed, but that's understandable, since there isn't much information available in English and many modern Poles are also misinformed about their country's food history, since the 50 years of Communism simplified the food landscape. I have seen many similar statements about Eastern European food before, but they are based on the notion that this region is somehow inherently different from other places in the world. That is not true. Based on the argument you present, you might as well say that Japanese cuisine didn't develop until the 19th century because the country was isolated. Let's face it - many of its traditional dishes are very simple yet we don't see them as simplistic No one says that Scandinavian cuisine is primitive because it uses mostly local ingredients (meats, berries, veg, etc.). That fact is actually considered one of this region's culinary strengths instead. Why does Eastern Europe not get the same treatment? Why is it instead viewed as Western Europe's poor culinary cousin when its tradition really has much to offer to people who want to dig a bit deeper under the surface of cheap milk bars and what their Polish friend's grandmom served them for lunch? Polish cuisine isn't just some kind of bastard child of its neighbors.
      ALL cuisines are based on local ingredients and were influenced by culinary traditions they came in contact with, so how is Eastern Europe (or Poland in particular) different from the rest of the world in this way? Poland has a very rich culinary tradition, which had sadly been suppressed and simplified during much of the 20th century (I think that is the real reason why it is not very popular abroad). Polish cuisine very early on used spices and ingredients from the Middle East, in much larger quantities than in Western Europe (and we know this because there's plenty of surviving recipe books, as well as trade records and reports from foreigners) and has many characteristic elements and flavors that differentiate it from other traditions, even if dishes might seem similar at first glance. The problem is that after WWII, lots of of quality cuisine was considered bourgeois, which reduced the food offerings available to people to what is essentially peasant dishes. Now, pierogi and other simple meals which are immediately identified as 'typical' Polish food can be lovely, but seeing Polish cuisine only from that perspective is like looking at French food only from the perspective of the simplest dishes and ignoring the existence of haute cuisine. Not to mention that there are many regional cuisines that can differ quite significantly and make Polish food even more diverse and interesting. We shouldn't be viewing American cuisine only through the lens of fast foods, chain restaurants, and meals people prepade from pre-made products. Or consider English food bland and boring after tasting it in the form of ready meals and cheap pub food at Weatherspoons. But we should also giv more credit to the cuisines of Eastern Europe.

    5:30 it is indeed bagel, which is called in Poland, Precel, and when you check the information you will actually get to know that bagels were invented in Poland, in Cracow by Polish Jewish community, thats why everywhere arond the city of Cracow you can find stands with bagels because they are part of the tradiotion of this city. The first soup you tried is called Żurek and it one of the classic polish soups and probably you will not find any similar anywhere else in thee world. In fact soups are a big part of polish cousin, they are very rich in flawor and considered very healthy, you will find tons of types of soups, sometimes made of surprising ingredient. When travelling abroad and trying different cuisines I would say that polish people are one of the best if not the best in Europe when comes to soups, however the truth is also that soups in Western Europe are not so common maybe because they are not really tasty, at least from my polish point of taste ;) Keep up good work with videos! :)

    Little info about Pope John Paul II cake 😁
    “However, from time to time he indulged his sweet tooth and nostalgia for his home country by eating a dessert made famous under the name Papieska Kremowka (“Papal” Cream Cake), a sweet made with puff pastry filled with cream. During his time as pope, John Paul II told the story of how, when he was young, he had organized (together with his friends) a cream-cake-eating competition to celebrate their high school graduation. Karol (his name before becoming pope) managed to eat 18, but even so, he wasn’t the winner.”

    Wish You all the best from Poland:)))) Zapiekanki are so popular in Poland, not only in Krakow. When I was at university in Toruń it was my comfort food after hard exams or day:) The soup You've tried is a common dish for Easter. You should also try some Polish bread from old traditional bakery, especially sourdough, it's amazing. And of course Polish KREMÓWKI, love Your vlogs:)

      Well, cuisine of all slavic countries has much in common. Russia is huge, and have a lot of different nations each with their own cuisine. Common food in Russia are bortchs (sour soup), okroshka (cold soup with raw vegetables), solyanka (spicy and sour soup with cured meats), ukha (fish soup), pelmeni (meat dumplings), vareniki (dumplings with hundreds of different stuffings like potatoes, mushrooms, cottage cheese, berrries, fruits etc.), kasha (porridge from various cereal: wheat, barley, buckwheat, peas, oats, millet etc.). We also like pickled stuff. We pickle everything :) Cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, pattypan squashes, beets, pumpkins, watermelons, apples, pears - you name it! Also there are huge variety of milk products in Russia, especially fermented ones. You should definitely visit Russia, you will love it, im sure!

This is information for lady from EatPolska, oscypek is regional product which is regulated by polish law about regional products and it have to be made from sheep milk.

    Ok, so one little twist about zapiekanka you bought at Plac Nowy. As you probably noticed there are plenty spots, where you can buy zapiekanka, but local legend say, that there is only one, true spot with the greatest of them all. In fact - none of them are that great, this place is just a another spot for tourists or drunk college students. But there actually is place in Krakow, where you can buy true, home made zapiekanka, but I'm not gonna tell where, because it's far from city center and it would look like commercial of this place, but this comment here is not :) Great material btw :)

    Regarding the dessert you tried: it's called kremówka and it is in fact associated with the Polish Pope Janem Pawłem II (John Paul II). He was born in Wadowice. He was once talking about his years in school and said: "a po maturze chodziliśmy na kremówki" (after graduation we went to eat kremówki) and after that there was a big boom about this dessert :D Now everybody knows what it is, and we call it "papieskie kremówki" (Pope's kremówki)
