I’m glad I watched this video before dropping $700 for Acura dealership to change ONE HID light bulb! $299 cost of the bulb and $400 for labor! I wanted to cry. I’ve change light bulbs myself but it wasn’t so hard but this looks alittle hard because the lack of space but thanks to your video I will try to do it myself! Acura 2010 Mdx for reference.
Omg you are the BEST!!! I was just able to get this done on my Accura MDX 2009 in less than 45 minuets for both sides! I didn’t remove the battery, but I am thankful I have small hands that could get in there.
As a single mother I couldn’t afford it get it done at a mechanic shop. I try to do most things on my own by watching videos like yours!!
Glad this helped!
why do sinlgle mothers always have to let everyone know they are single mothers? What difference does that make in changing a lightbulb?
The low beam bulb on my 2008 MDX just went out. Dealership said the only option was $3200 replacement for entire assembly. The woman laughed and told me to look for a youtube video for DIY. Thanks for posting this.
$3200 is a bit steep :D Start with swapping the bulb from the other side (you know it’s working, so if it doesnwork in the other headlight, you might have another issue like igniter module, for example). Good luck!
Thanks for the video. Well done and worked
perfectly. A few simple tips to make it even easier:
1. Grab a cheap small telescoping mechanic inspection mirror. $2-$3 variety will work fine. It allows a better look so you can understand how the clip retainer works and also inspect your work to verify everything is seated correctly.
2. There’s a wiring harness on the passenger side that makes it more difficult to access. It’s retained by a yellow fastener. To create more room pull it upward and tightly zip tie it to the power steering reservoir bracket.
3. The outer grey plastic covers are labeled “a” and “b” to indicate the drivers and passenger side. “A” = driver.
Thanks a lot!
+1 for the mirror. Also having a magnetic mounted flashlight helped.
Thank you so much for your video. Acura dealership wanted $410 just to replace the low beam passenger side bulb. I feel confident to now do it myself. Price for me doing the job myself, $20 for the bulb and my labor $0.
Dude. You are the man!!! Great video. Upgraded my 2013 RDX from HID to LED. Saved time and $$$ . Good thing I have small hands though. It was tight.
This video was a lifesaver. Thank you so much. I was able to get in without removing the clips and front part, just a tight working space. I’d estimate it took me 20 min., and half of that was trying to get the bulb seated correctly and clipped.
Great video, very helpful! Changing driver's side bulb was pretty easy. Hardest part was getting one side of the retainer clips back on the new bulb, had to fiddle with it for a few minutes. Otherwise, easy job. Thank you!
Thank you!
Very helpful and nice video production! Might also play some smooth jazz while doing my replacement to help w stress.
Hi. Thanks a lot for your video. I was able to change my low beam light on the driver's side without removing the battery or any other parts but it was a very tight and narrow space to operate with. It's also the first time ever doing it by myself.
Awesome! Thanks for your feedback!
Thank you so much! I've replaced the bulbs on my 09 MDX a year ago, I couldn't get them in so I tape them on. Now I know that the filament goes face down. Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you very much.
You’re welcome!
Excellent video! I purchased two bulbs on Amazon for less than $30. Your instructions saved me many hours of labor. Thank you for sharing your expertise and talent!
You are welcome, glad it helped!
Bagdan, you're Houdini! You made the passenger side look SO easy! I tried but dropped the old bulb into the headlight space, retrieved it, and said I wouldn't drop a $100 good bulb in there. I took the front bumper off after much thought and videos. It was 30 minutes or less start to finish. I should've captured it on a video but didn't. If I'd have known it would have been so smooth, I would have. Keep up your great work....JAM
Haha, Arthur, thanks! Glad it worked out for you! I was actually going to remove the bumper for this video for the "proper" installation. But as I was setting up the lights and camera I suddently felt very lazy, so I had to do it this way :)
Best video I've seen on this. I just ordered the bulbs, now to see what happens in practice!
Wow, thanks a lot for your feedback! Let me know how it went for you.
I was able to do the driver's side. However, on the passenger side, I can't twist off the igniter. I can get to it, but it just seems fused on. Any suggestions how to release this?
@@alanfothergill4934 It might have fused due to heat. Other than pushing it, no other suggestions. It's supposed to come off. I know it might be scary, but that's what I would do.
@@alanfothergill4934 There are a couple of UA-cam videos that make the front bumper removal easy. I know it sounds daunting, but I did it with zero problems in about 30 minutes start to finish. This will take the terror out of the job: ua-cam.com/video/m_m27OwA0lU/v-deo.html
Thank u so much ! Took me 20 minutes and I did the passenger side ! Saved me $150!!!
You’re welcome! Glad it helped!
Spasibo. Excellent video, the direction to where to turn each item that needs turning was a huge help. Took 2 minutes to do the actual replacement of the bulb (after taking the battery out). I only did the driver side. In my case, there was a loose connector on the opposite side of the harness connected to the bulb. If your bulb doesn't turn on initially, push down (blindly) all of the connectors you can reach before you reconnect the battery.
Excellent! Glad this was helpful!
Great Video, once again! So nice to have you on MDXers these days. I just changed out my highs to DDM Tuning Sabre 50w LEDs ($95 on sale for $75). They are almost too bright (and, as you pointed out, I have reservations regarding their longevity - at least DDM has a 2 year warranty). After driving with them for a bit, it has really highlighted how dim our lows are.
I’m a fan of HIDs for lows. I think they have a more robust “throw” and the right kind of bulb in the right lamp is critical in a low beam due to its use with oncoming drivers. Also, LEDs don’t get as hot & can have a problem melting off ice & snow in particularly harsh winter conditions. I can live with this in my highs but not in my lows.
Anyway, I haven’t tackled HID replacement yet but your video has inspired me with its apparent ease. I also appreciate your commentary on bulb selection. I believe the stock color warms to 5000K. I’ve thought mine looked more yellow and, after your comparison, I wonder if that hasn’t occurred due to aging. (I’m comparing against my Diode Dynamics 6000K marker lights & now 6000K DDM Sabres). 5500K sounds fine & your cost pragmatism is reasonable. Thanks for the discussion. I am a little curious if anyone has compared them head to head with Morimoto XB35s which have a great reputation as well (@skirmch).
You know you’re going to get grief about that key ; )
BTW, love your index & tool & product links.
Thanks a lot!
From various sources I understand the stock is 4300K, so having 4700-5000 would be the closest to stock. This does not affect the light output, though. It's still strong. Some believe 4300-4700 provides best light output, but that's debatable, of course. In my car the left one burnt out completely, and the right one was kind of a pinkish tint (I guess another indicator it was going).
For what it’s worth as a follow up - I remain very pleased with the DDM Tuning 50w Sabre LED for the high beams - now at 2.5 years. Finally getting around to doing the HIDs. (Lasers down to $100/pair as of 8/2021).
Theres a little notch on the bulb which goes UP. That helps with seating the bulb in place before pressing the metal locks in.
This is fantastic I have acura MDx 2010 I'm going change the bulb as you did yours thank you very much
Thank you. Very helpful. The clap were pain.
Just replaced my 08 MDX lights thanks to your help! Thanks!
You’re welcome! Glad I could help.
Bogdan, this video was extremely helpful! Thank you for your energy and time
Thanks!
awesome you made my day with this video i've taking the old bulb out and put it back in for practice just as you did now i need to buy the bulbs and replace them only one blown but gonna replace both thank you so much for this video
You are welcome! Thank you for your feedback!
Thanks! Dealing blind with the clamp was pretty difficult, but I got it somehow.
Thanks for the video , my battery cables have the same issue, I just cut a small 3/4” copper pipe and cut a slice one side and use used it as a sleeve over the battery poles.
Great instructional video!
Best video. I just changed both HID bulbs with OSRAM 7000K. This was my first ever car DIY. Light level appears to be fine during day time but will check the levels tonight. Many thanks for this great video. Also I did not remove the battery.
Thanks for your feedback!
You make it look easy! Took a while for me to get the new bulb seated properly before engaging the clips.
It’s almost never easy for me, because most of the time I’m doing something for the first time. But most of the failures are edited out, otherwise the videos will be many hours long.
Really well done and comprehensive video, good job and thank you!!!
To nie takie proste jak sobie wyobrażałem do puki nie obejrzałem filmu. Dzięki
Saved me hours from the alternative bumper removal method, thanks a ton. Definitely will be referencing your channel for any MDX troubles I have down the line.
You're welcome! Glad I could help.
The bumper removal, bulb replacement, and bumper re-install took me 30 minutes or less......
Arthur Miller good for you? I was simply reaching out and giving my thanks towards his assistance in replacing my headlight, in a way that didn’t seem counterintuitive. Obviously you know the dealer preferred method well, so why did you even bother commenting on this video?
It was meant to encourage MDXers to brave enough to tackle projects they feel may be beyond their capabilities. I have commented with Bagdan several times thanking him for his help. That's why I commented, and now you know.
Arthur Miller Ah, sorry I misunderstood the tone of the comment. I’m just used to the UA-cam comment section being a warzone. I personally thought removing the bumper seemed like a waste of time, considering it can be accomplished this way. I just hate those little plastic clips, they always break on me.
thanks for the video!!! My ‘10 MDX passenger side headlight needs to replace and hopefully this will help me to replace it
Great video and excellent examples of new vs old xenon lights on the MDX. Ty vm
This is so far the best vedio on how to replace the bulb. Unfortunately I can't open the driver side plastic cover. I can turn it counterclockwise but the cover can't be removed. I had no problem on passenger side.
Thanks! You bring up a very good point! I have recently swapped the projectors in the headlights, so I had to remove them. And I noticed that this time when I was removing one of the back covers (don't remember which one), it got stuck on one of the tabs for some reason. I think the rubber o-ring got jammed there last time I reinstalled the covers. It took quite a bit of careful but persistent efforts to remove. And that is with headlights removed, so a much easier access and convenient orientation. Try prying it (carefully) open with a tool once you turn it fully.
@@AcuraAddicted You are brilliant! I was hesitating to use a tool as I worried about breaking the cap. I used a flat screw driver this time and it worked! The problem is one of the teeth that hook the cap was torn when last time the dealer shop replaced the bulb and adapter. So when I turned to end, it actually passed the opening. Thank you again!
Happy end! I’m glad it worked for you!
Just did this for the second time ,,, for some reason it was harder than first time ,,,,thanks again
Thank you for the feedback!
To make it easier you don’t have to takeoff the battery and the black plastic plate ,you can access it without removing the battery and the plastic plate....thanks for the video....
Good stuff. Thank you very much. I'm going in
you makes it look so easy , I'm still deciding either to do it my self or pay to have a expert to do it
There’s really nothing to it. If you are unable to fit your hand after all, no harm, you can always put the battery back in and drive to a shop during day for them to do it.
Спасибо! Очень к стати твое видео. Уже пару дней собирался снять лампы и переживал чтоб не напортачить, а тут бац видосик) респект! Vodka, balalayka, shapka ushanka))))😉
Спасибо за отзыв! :)
Super helpful thank you for making the video!
You are welcome!
Very very nice and interesting video I learn more everyday with your videos thanks broo
Thanks a lot for your feedback!
Acura Addicted you very welcome sir
May be buyin a 07 for 8 grand. This is so inspiring. Thank u
Wish you had a driving video with the old lights vs the new lights on maybe a darker road. It wouldve really made a difference. I will probably be upgrading mine as i feel like i can't see at night
It’s worth noting that an all LED setup in a cold climate is inadvisable. The LEDs don’t generate enough heat to burn off snow & ice. The HID low & LED high combo in the same housing works well though.
thanks for the video really help me i lot.
Thanks!
The driver side was easy to do and I will like to see with parts of the passenger side are supposed to remove to see how much space there is to inserts my hands on the head light assembly thanks for the video
Thank you for your feedback!
I’m gonna try it. It’s ridiculous to pay $160 labor for this at the dealership.
Agreed. Good luck!
Truly wonderful video all the way around.
Thank you for your feedback!
@@AcuraAddicted You are welcome sir.
Ordered new D2S bulbs today cause my 2011 MDX still has the original bulbs
Thank you!!!🙏
Good stuff tanks for sharing 👍🤩
Great video! One of the bulbs yesterday while driving was dimmer than the other. I turned off the lights then back on and for a few seconds that bulb produced proper lighting and turned dim again. Don't know if bulb is going out or just a glitch. I found OSRAM Original Xenarc D2S Xenon that should be the same as OEM color 4300K. I am just concerned with the longevity of the bulbs versus the original Acura part.
Yes, that’s how my original bulbs went. So far the OSRAM bulbs are holding well.
@@AcuraAddicted I wanted to try and order the ones you have in the video but they are out of stock(powerbulbs.com)
Just getting ready to do mine and was fearfully of taking out the bumper. Was considering led replacement to avoid heating plastic lenses which I consider is the problem in most fading of headlights lenses.
In order to achieve the low beam HID light output with LEDs you’ll spend at least twice of the HID bulb cost. Don’t do it.
The advice for attempting to replace hid bulb without removing the bumper did not work for me. Had to remove it but it did not work so I will now have to change both ignighter and ballast. Went through total frustration on removing side bumper clip bracket in order to remove last bolt to headlight lense. But I did discover an alternate without removing clip bracket which I ended up partially breaking rear hole tabs due to frustrating removal tabs. I do recommend removing the bumper.
Any videos on how to test the ignighter and ballast other wise I will have to purchase both.
Thank you for the help. Question; On the passenger side did you reach it from underneath the vehicle?
No problem! No, I don't think you can - there is a windshield washer fluid tank there.
Thank you, I bought the driver side and look at this video, worked great, Saved me a lot of money. AAAAAA+++++++
Thank you mister
That was helpful !
Thanks a lot !

@@AcuraAddicted First place I look when I need to fix something on my MDX. Appreciate all the videos!
Which headlight bulbs do you recommend now? Since this video is from 5 years ago. I need to replace the headlights on my Accura MDX 2009. I have zero experience and just trying to do it on my own cause I can’t afford the rip off mechanics. As of today May, 10th 2024 Osram 66240NB Xenarc D2S Nightbreaker is $97.29 for two bulbs on Amazon and OSRAM Xenarc Night Breaker Laser D2S is $99. 94 for two bulbs
Hi, thanks for all your videos! My 2011 MDX passenger low beam died. I Tried replacing bulbs twice with 2 different new bulbs and still no low beam only on passenger side. What’s the next thing to replace?
Check wiring to the igniter first. If it’s fine, it’s probably the igniter. The easiest way to diagnose an igniter is to swap it from one headlight to another. Unfortunately, for that you’ll have to remove headlights, which requires removing the bumper.
The wiring is fine. I’m guessing this is the igniter. Before this happened, I noticed a large amount of condensation on the passenger headlight housing when the low beam died. Any tips for igniter replacement? Thanks again and your MDX videos are great. I probably wouldn’t own a 2011 mdx if not for them. 😊
@@orangeskky I do have a video coming up in Season 5 where I show how to remove the bumper, headlights and disassemble them, including the igniter. However, that's not coming out until after well in New Year. It is pretty straightforward, though. I think there are other videos on how to do it Look it up on UA-cam. But don't just replace the igniter before swapping them from the side that works to confirm it is the igniter. Good luck!
Thanks for this!
You’re welcome!
thanks, good video...Probably should check the light bulbs before you reinstall all the battery brackets though
Thanks! Yes, good idea.
Hi good video but can i know what is the exactly details of bulbs you put in your mdx thank you very much 👍👍
Thanks! All the details and links are in the description.
Thank you for your video ✌
You are most welcome!
Thanks
You’re welcome!
Getting the igniter on using this method is so hard I thought I got it and then after getting battery connected was so bummed to see it same not working and had to do it again
can you add the year or generation of MDX you're showing on this video in the title??? wife's 2005 is the first generation and it's basically plug & play once you pop the hood and twist the bulbs off counter clock wise...
good work
Hello, thanks for this very helpful video! I replaced the Driver bulb easily but it still does not work. I am thinking maybe the ignitor is burnt out? Is that possible?
Yep, it might be the igniter ballast. The easiest way to confirm is to swap the ballast from the other headlight and see if it works. If it started working, there's your culprit. You'll have to remove the bumper for that, though. But it's not a huge deal.
Can you make a video on how to do the high brights bulb replacement please?
I can only make videos on repairs and maintenance that my car needs. Both my hi beams are working. But it shouldn’t be that difficult.
You said metal contact down ? Great job with camera footage it’d hard to understand how those clamps work but saw better on another video where they had pulled the bumper they are like two squeeze pins you squeeze them to pull out and then squeeze and push in to fasten
You push it in and toward the bulb then out right. Ive watched that white mdx video as well. My clamps wont budge.
Awesome content as usual! What are you cookin for season 3?
Thanks a lot, Yamin! There's various stuff: drive belt tensioner replacement, electrical connectors to fix the power tailgate error, possibly DRLs and FOGs, some plasti dipping and caliper painting as well. There might be more for the next season as well.
💪👍
Good video, waiting for Amazon to ship my new bulbs.
Thanks! You won't be disappointed!
The cap says 60,000 volts, do not remove, and the owners manual says something similar, and that having car off and key out still unsafe. Does removing the battery sufficiently discharge everything?
Yes, that is exactly why you should disconnect the battery.
Is the lights you replaced closer to blue like the original ones or more yellow like normal ones? Also is the brand of bulb that you bought is really good for longevity and reliability?
Yes, they are not bluish, I don’t like that. Yes, OSRAM is one of the highest quality bulbs.
I found the clips almost locked themselves back in when the bulb is aligned correctly.
Andrew York you should have immeadiatly run out and bought lottery tickets because luck like doesn’t last long.
@@nathanwoods2088 the same thing happened when I did the other side. When I didn't have the bulb seated perfectly, I could only get one clip down. Realigned the bulb and snap.
This comment saved me. I spent 10 min fidgeting until I saw this. Once I had the bulb seated correctly, I pushed the clips and they locked right away. Thank you!!!
How did you get your hand in on the passenger side??? I can’t and my hands are small !!!!!!
It's super tight there, much more difficult than on the driver's side. You can do it!
Hi, I've already replaced the low beam, but it still doesn't work. Are there any other solutions i should try? Thanks
Check wiring to the igniter and ballast first. If it’s fine, it’s probably the igniter or ballast. The easiest way to diagnose is to swap it from one headlight to another. Unfortunately, for that you’ll have to remove headlights, which requires removing the bumper.
@@AcuraAddicted big help thanks again
Interesting video, My 08 mdx has a daytime running light out, i wonder if that would require removing the bumper as well
Hi Ben. Thanks! No, you do not need to remove the bumper for that. You can get through the wheel well fender. You would have to work blind as well, basically, but it's doable. In fact, a video on this is coming up (I'm currently waiting for my new DRLs to arrive), but you don't need to wait for that.
@@AcuraAddicted Many Thanks! Keep up the awesome work! you've already saved me thousands learning how to do stuff myself, on the same car as mine no less.

@@TheKPDX Thanks, I appreciate!
If you're not planning to remove the battery, should you still disconnect it before proceeding?
Absolutely!
Great video, did you install the 4350k or the 5500k? You mentioned 5500 in the video but the link is for a 4350
Thanks! These bulbs are 5500K. The listing has wrong temperature on Amazon.
Thanks! This is really helpful! I searched online, the prices of D2S bulbs vary vastly. Like this one, Philips - 85122C1 Philips D2S Standard Authentic Xenon HID Headlight Bulb, 1 Pack, $37. Also there are less known brands which are much cheaper. Anything I need to be aware of?
There are usually ways to verify if brand bulbs are authentic. Good thing on Amazon is free return, so you can send them back if they are not authentic. I’m not sure about cheap bulbs, though. Basically you are investing into the next decade for your car (that’s how long they usually last), so think about it like a long term investment.
Is there a way to get a replacement cover for the headlight bulb? I was trying to replace the passenger side bulb I noticed the cover is missing
Your best bet would be a salvage yard.
@@AcuraAddicted thanks I find some on eBay
Why the steering wheel so stiff on MDX 2009? I had the power steering pump replaced, flushed out and new fluid and it is still no smooth turn. I am hating it !
It's probably your steering pump. If you have not installed the OEM that is. Also, steering stiffness is very subjective.
for some reason the light bulbs on my 2007 Acura were different. They were attached to a cable that was a plug and play. I was not able to simply change the lightbulb. I need to find a light bulb that comes with wiring already. Have you ever seen this before?
No. Possibly custom lights?

Hey I am just wondering why don’t you change your bulb to 10000k it look awesome I have changed mine
Not sure if that’s meant to be sarcasm or just a typo, but it you mean 10K, I consider that horrible. In my opinion headlights ahould not exceed 5K Kelvin.
What is the original color of the original oem lights because my headlights don’t look like your old ones like someone changed them before and now they are white/bluish
4300K
Bodgan..you ever ran into clunk comming from passenger side of your mdx? Mines is a 2007.
I have run into many different clunks and annoying sounds. It can be many things. Is it coming from the front or back? When does it happen? It’s kind of hard to diagnose over text, of course.
Just wanted your ideas.. it happens when you go over small bumps. Changed outer tie rod. Sway bar link. New adj struts..3yrs ogo. On Acura forum it could be many things.. looking at sway bar bushing and engine mount. What do you think? Front right side
If you already replaced tie rods, links and struts, it could be the bushings (very easy to replace yourself, check out my video) or the inner tie rods.
I can t finish passager side changing.it is so nervous there.
Here for my 2007!!
Hoping don’t have to remove
The bumper !
Once it’s installed do you need to get it aligned? Adjust?
When installing the bulb, you’re not messing with the adjustments (it’s done by separate controls). So if your headlights are properly adjusted, you shouldn’t have to after replacing the bulb.
Hot bulb in but can’t fasten the igniter it’s drivers side too supposed to be easier just can’t get it to lock in it’s second time I pulled battery to attempt :(
It might be tricky, but doable
Does this work work 2014 MDX also?
No, the 2014 MDX has Jewel eye style LED headlight assemblies, which are completely different
I have a Question. is better replace both low beam or just the one is out ?
It's best to replace both, especially if they are aged (the second one is likely to go soon after the first one anyway). You'll also get the matching output for both (as bulbs age, output intensity lowers).
@@AcuraAddicted thank you so much. Great information 👍
Hello Bogdan. Do you have a video for adjusting the low beams on a (2012) Acura MDX? Thanks George
Hi George. Never had to do it, sorry!
I noticed that since I've purchased the vehicle while driving at night that I can clearly see a horizontal line of light shining ahead as opposed to a fuller illumination. I presume that this is 'normal' however my goal was to raise the line; hence my question. What are your thoughts on this 'phenomenon"?
There should be a sharp line outlining the edge of the light output. If you raise it above standard, you’ll start blinding on coming traffic with your low beams as if it was high beams.
By "sharp line outlining the edge of the light output" you must mean the "horizontal line of light" I referred to. Looks like this is as designed as opposed to traditional head lights that illuminate a wider range. Thanks for clarifying. On a related note is this video a replacement of the bulb that sits on top of the round light?
Yes, that’s what I meant. That’s how HID cenon light works. It is significantly brighter than halogen, so you simply cannot allow full uncontrollable output, otherwise you blind on coming traffic.
No se desconfigura nada cuando retiras la batería?
You'll lose your memory settings as well as you'll need to enter your radio and navi code after you reconnect the battery.
