Do I Need Thyroid Medication?

  • It's Thyroid Thursday and today we are looking at another lab interpretation.
I recently had a consultation with somebody who, the primary reason for the consultation was to find out, do they need thyroid medication or not? This is someone who's pretty healthy based on the information I had: no real signs or symptoms, eats a really pretty clean whole food based diet, and works out every day of the week.
The person doesn't really have any complaints, but is trying to be as healthy as possible. She went to her functional or integrative practitioner, had a comprehensive set of labs done, and TSH was 3.9 when the thyroid panel was run.
The functional practitioner thought this was too high. They wanted the value in between one and two and said this is a person who's developing a thyroid condition. Regarding other lab vales, Free T4 was 1.33, which is in the normal, maybe somebody's optimal range, Free T3 was within the lab range but typically below what most people would say is an optimal range, Reverse T3 was within the lab reference range and within my optimal range, but this practitioner thought this was too high. They wanted it lower.
This person's integrative practitioner looking at these labs said, you're hypothyroid and we're going to prescribe Armour to help increase that T3 and lower the TSH. The patient was confused and wondering, do I really need this? So they go to their allopathic physician, their primary care physician, show them these labs, say, hey, the integrative practitioner wants to put me on Armour.
The person asks, do I have hypothyroidism? And the allopathic physician said, you don't have hypothyroidism, you don't need thyroid medication, and ultimately advised against it. All of this led her to me. She shared that her integrative practitioner was saying that she's hypothyroid while at the same time, her allopathic physician said she is not hypothyroid.
So her questions are 1. Am I hypothyroid? and 2. Do I need thyroid medication?
Check out the full explanation in this video and let me know what questions you have. Hope this helps!
