And there's also the mess with Cinematic Venom. When he was criticising CA, the CTC people showered him with praise, but as soon as he started criticising CTC, Lupa and her associates began digging up his old videos to label him as a misogynist and such.
This video isn’t even bad when compared to NC’s The Wall review.

Well, if everyone did one let's play, and then swore they would never do one again because it turned out badly, there would be very few let's plays.

It's more fun to do Let's Plays of games that are intensive on strategy, logistics, and inventory management. That way, you'll always have something interesting to talk about. Borderlands 1 and 2 are a good examples. You can play through them 87 bazillion times and still find something new.
Which is why Let’s Plays (IN THEIR CURRENT STATE) need to die. They’re not entertaining. The personalities behind them could put their talents into something far more worthy of said talent.

Eh, his delivery and humor style just doesn't fit the "Lets Play" format very well. I don't really see what the big deal is here. He tried something different and it wasn't suited to him, then got back to what he did best. Happens to entertainers all the time.

I think people called this boring, but if you look at some other let’s plays from around this same time, they were pretty boring as well.
everyone saying "this isnt that bad, dont know why people hated it." he cut out a lot. This was a segment from a 45 minute video. After around 20 minutes it got painfully repetitive.

Were people really mad at him at this?! This is the 1st time I've seen this review and I have seen worse reviews by him, yet people seemed offended/angry when he did this; really? And the weird part was that I could sit through this more than a PewDiePie video yet not enough people complain about his videos.

I don't think this video is very entertaining, but the backlash it got was ridiculous.
Most of this is just overreacting to what's happening in the game. I mean what makes let's plays entertaining is the personality of the person playing, them being themselves. This is just the critic in constant rage mode for every little thing, always just acting. And it doesn't work as the Critic's humor because there's no build up or setup, no variation, and a lot of what he's reacting to is just mundane. Plus, reacting to every single moment instead of editing and picking out moments to concentrate on leads to it dragging on. The likes of Nostalgia Critic and AVGN are oversensitive and ragey to things that don't really matter, it's part of their whole comedy. But you know that in real life people like that would really be annoying and dull to be around, and to put that kind of character in a real personal setting like this makes that really come out. I mean this would of worked fine if Nostalgia Critic started more laid back, and built up to his rage, and maybe if he told some personal stories about some really bad movies he'd seen and made some elaborate comparisons about them to the game or something. But all we get is the rage aspect, the surface icon of his character.
This video, ironically, is a soulless spin-off.

I think because he seems to be trying too hard to fill up space by talking about what is literally happening in the game scene by scene. A lot of Let's Players typically talk to entertain, but Doug spends a significant amount of time talking to fill space.

I don't see why this was so unpopular. It seems like a normal blind run to me, rage and swearing included. Besides, it's better than some other LPs I've seen.

By nostalgia critic standards this is not very good but on its own it's alright.
Still better than most let's plays.
And waaaaay better than most of Doug's newer stuff. This may not be his best video, but it still has some great laughs and isn't interrupted by unnecessary narrative scenes that make his newer reviews so awful.

I guess there's no accounting for taste but this is actually one of my favorite reviews of his. It's a different approach than that of the AVGN but I can still relate because I saw myself when I watched this. I remember playing this game as a kid and it makes me feel better to know that I wasn't the only one out there who got fed up with it. And the ending gets me every time as well, a) because it's all in his delivery and b) because again I see myself lol.
For a 2011 LP, this is actually pretty funny

Honestly this isn't even that bad a let's play.... I've definitely seen worse. However with Doug, it just doesn't seem natural. He's a reviewer and movie fanatic, not a gaming guy. This is a format that's unfamiliar to him, so yeah, it's gonna be a little rough around the edges. We all remember the great let's players of today, well they started out like this. Uncomfortable, cringe-y at times, and still trying to get a feel for the field and find their style. So had Doug continued doing let's plays, he probably would've gotten better and more comfortable and even developed his own unique commentary style.

I love how this is supposed to be the worst Nostalgia Critic episode, but every comment (including mine) is saying that it isn't that bad. I actually enjoyed it, and found times where I was laughing. It was a good episode. Is it the best episode? No, not at all. Is it the worst episode ever made? No, it was actually enjoyable and I found it funny.

It is just doug on his own shooting the shit, so that already ranks it above every episode he did with his "sidekicks". hes actually a pretty quick witted guy in real life, more so then a lot of other youtubers who use scripts, I think the only reason this got ripped on hard was because it was released during his golden era when literally every video he produced was hilarious - compared to modern nostalgia critic it is a great episode!

The reason this video and Bebe's Kids didn't work is because Doug felt that he must constantly entertain others by talking (and shrieking) non-stop. Pretty obvious, but I just like to reflect as to why that is.
That barely-have-time-for-a-breath narration here is just indicative of someone who was socially insecure--someone who had a lack of confidence in the power of silence in a belief that any silent pauses would result in others' boredom and disinterest. He was competing with the entertainment factor of the game itself--a good Let's Play needs balance between the two, but he clearly won out in the end, and not in a good way. If he continued these, but set aside his character and acted as himself, as well as learned to utilize these much needed pauses, he could have been really successful doing LPs.
Well, in the case of Bebés Kids, it was an intentional attempt at ripping off AVGN, and he wasn't bad at it, especially since the actual AVGN also resorts to yelling and cursing a bit often.
Thanks for posting this, guys! I always thought this one funny and was surprised so many people took Doug's character so seriously on it! O_o
I like how Bart is the main focus in most of these games and not Lisa. I guess "Learning Linguistics with Lisa" wouldn't make a good game.

I know people criticize this episode for being unfunny and one of the worst episodes of Nostalgia Critic, but I actually like this episode. There are actually some parts of the video that make me laugh. Like when he defeated Sherri and Terri during the Bart Man level, the way he said "YEAH! YOU DIE BITCHES! HAH!" is hilarious! Also during the Bart Man stage, when he asked if the missiles were trying to shoot down Jack Skellington, I laugh myself silly just thinking about it.
Ah the nightmare episode. This seems to be infamous but I've never actually seen it.

I wonder how much of the gameplay was legitimately Doug and how much was the Critic.
The mistake was doing a traditional let's play with off the cuff commentary and very little video editing; It's extremely tricky to make entertaining. If Doug had approached this how he did Bebe's kids (heavier editing to accentuate the comedy and provide better pacing, scenes actually featuring the critic, and scripted jokes and commentary) he would have had something. Nostalgia Critic approaching video games was a promising concept that they never ended up exploring thanks to this video's reception (and that somewhat needless narrative that the Critic sticks to movies as his medium of choice for critique).
