I was a very early supporter, before all the volunteers and the move to Port Townsend. Almost packed my bags and came up as I was unemployed at the time. But, landed a great job and here we are, years later, and I'm unemployed again.... Life goes full circle sometimes, always regretted not joining the crew. Fair seas Tally Ho, thank you for this first part of the journey.
This will remain as the most extensive documentary/class on how to build a wooden boat the way it was done a century ago. A very precious gift from Leo, thank you so much for sharing it with the world.

I still think a portrait of Darlene and Raul sitting on their sofa, with Pancho in the foreground chewing on a plank belongs on the bulkhead above the settee in the salon. This would not have happened without their generosity and the entertainment value of the scenes with Pancho chewing on something, anything. Pancho has a part in the popularity of your videos and the success of Sampson Boat Company channel. There has been a confluence of things and events that has resulted in the rebirth of Tally Ho into this merging of the classic and modern to become what must be the best built gaff cutter in the world, and Darlene and Raul are the original tributary that merged with your dream to restore the Tally Ho.
Absolutely this needs to be done. Without Darlene, Raul and Pancho - the original Tally Ho would have become firewood with nothing to show for her existence.

Very bittersweet. Not only for all the great work we've watched you all do there, but also because this episode reminds us that in the grand scheme, all workshops are temporary.
We are all temporary! With the right set up a workshop with apprentices last generations. The journey continued. We certainly stand on the shoulders of giants and Leo shows where we have got to.
Not only that, saying goodbye to friends and colleagues, seeing Bob on the jetty waving goodbye was a little sad too. It only seemed very recently that Leo said they still had a lot to do before Tally Ho could get into the water, and here we are effectively sailing off into the sunset.
These videos are the only thing in my life thats remained consistent over the last 7 years. Changed countrys careers friends partners and never stopped watching Tally ho and the people building it. A crazy feeling to see it finished. ❤
7 years - and now a few tears. Lots of melancholy seeing the goodbye to all those workers who have become virtual friends. It was part of the plan, all along, and the closing words (text), Leo, make you such a dear gentleman, that you have always been in the past 7 years. The next phase of sailing around the globe will be excitingly beautiful in different ways. Through these videos you have commanded great respect, with your team, noticeably so when you and/or the boat are referenced in other YT sailing channels.
I don't know why I was recommended this channel as I am not a sailor or boat builder, but I am so pleased to have watched every episode since the start. The adventure is only just beginning, kinda like seeing one's own child growing up and leadving home. @@benhollanders7911 Not sure what you mean by 2 years. Leo has had the boat for around 7.5 years now (June 2017), moved it to inside the workshop space in the Port Townsend shipyard nearly 3.5 years ago (Jul 2021), then took it out of the workshop space just over a year ago (Oct 2023).
Thanks for demonstrating a dream sequence, over 7 years, showing people how making fully functional "artwork" combining ancient and modern techniques, to a stupendous result.

They followed the truck but no video of the owner. Never part with a tool but know who will use it after you have departed. I am 76, have been collecting tools and restoring pre War machinery for most of that time. None of my grandchildren are interested in the things I love so they can have the car and house when I’m gone. The Lathe, Mill, Welders and a lifetime collection of tools are going to a STEM teacher who I only know by her published work. I know she will use and care for these tools that have given joy to my life.
I still remember how moved I was, watching Leo building a platform in this first workshop to live on. Just he and the boat. Lonely but full of hope. Eventually a lot of people revived this gorgeous boat. Fair winds, Leo. I'll keep watching.

Paddy isn't the kind of guy to put down roots, from what I gathered on social media. So, as long as that remains the case, and he continues to get on with Leo, I could easily imagine him being on the boat for quite a long time indeed.
OK So they built a boat - but many boats have been built. The part of watching this for 7 years is not just a boat but the skills that created it and more, much more - the people skills that Leo possesses. Innate in my view - to manage people over such a long time on a project where every detail is perfection - is simply a miracle. I packed up my shop of almost ten years in 2000. Moved to a new place in Pennsylvania and I am still unpacking boxes all these years later. Can't believe the emotions that swept over me when I watched you pack up your shop and sweep the floor. Damn. Like a flood.... You keep safe and have fun wherever you go and fair winds take you. My old dad told me that you are only ever a custodian of something nice. Houses, cars, workshops and boats. They all end up in someone’s else’s hand eventually. Anyone watching this channel will have similar experiences but one thing that is a constant is change. So, as we look forward to a new chapter, we can only be excited on what’s around the next patch of coastline so Fair Winds and Following Seas…..
So many people were a part of this project. Some came and went within a few episodes. Some stayed for a long long time before moving on. All of them in some way placed a mark on Tally Ho. This project is such a nice thing to have in this day and age. Glad to see western Washington given a spotlight. It's a beautiful place. Looking forward to what comes next.

I only caught 6 years of your rebuild of the Tally Ho. I've always wondered if you kept the plans, the full scale plans, I'm sure you did but I just wondered. 66-year-old retired American, worked in the industrial construction trades. I enjoyed your crew. And I enjoyed you and your crews work together on the Tally Ho. It's truly incredible the quality of the filming that you did, the quality of the build and the quality of character that you showed throughout the 7 years. Thank you Leo, you truly have given the world a gift. I'm sure there's many people that don't appreciate the hoops that you jumped through to complete this project. Great job these last seven years. You assembled an amazing crew of people, and that says a lot about your leadership abilities and good judgment.
Brilliant episode in the life of Tally Ho, Leo your endeavours and skills kept my son and I going, my son bought a Narrowboat to live on in the uk in 2019, as with most old boats after strip out we found she actually needed a whole new bottom, not what we were expecting, after we had replaced only half the bottom with new steel Covid struck and we were not aloud in the boat yard for most of the year, we launched her in May 2024 and all is well ,the one thing that kept us going through the cold winter months of toil was watching Tally Ho evolve, thank you for the motivation .
It is a rare thing to have a dream as big as big as Tally Ho was when you found her. It is rarer still to have the dedication to stay with it, and the good fortune to find the right people to help bring the dream to life. Now, with the closing of the shop you help us, those new and those of us who have been here since the beginning, to see the fundamental shift that is taking place. Thanks for taking us along, Leo.

Like I said years ago, this day would be bitter sweet! A mixture of sadness and excitement that Tally Ho and crew went on for new adventures! I have a personal history with this magnificent project, vessel, and the people who brought her back to life. I've followed pretty much since the beginning, I've shared the videos with my son who also enjoyed them, I lost my son to illness, and afterwards watching this project progress was one of the few things that help me continue life, with my wife I've gotten to see Tally Ho in person and stand on her deck as well as see the shop. And finally she will be part of me, hopefully, for the rest of my life.
I was thinking the same thing, he did a LOT of work on that boat. Is his shop still there in Port Townsend? Whatever the reasons he needs to get credit where credit is due.
I really didn't expect to shed tears during this video. But I did cry, feeling both joy for Leo's dream come true and a hollow sadness in knowing I wouldn't see Tally Ho around the PT boatyard anymore. I suppose the whole point of this was for you and Tally Ho to eventually sail away, but there is no small part of me that wanted to keep you here in the PNW, where we appreciate good art, craft and showmanship (you are truly a showman). Wow. It sort of snuck up on me. Feels like yesterday that you were still working towards stepping the mast. Just a couple of days since pouring the keel. Maybe a week since you were cutting the frames into shape. In such a short time we went from construction site to ship. Amazing. It's sad, in a way, but also exciting, since this is what it has all been about. I'm really looking forwards to what's coming next, and I am really glad Patrick's there. He's such a character. Leo, I'm sure you tool care of this but in case you didn't, I have some tips (from painful experience) for leaving your tools in the trailer for a NW winter. Make sure to coat all the cast iron and raw steel parts with a paste wax or other protectant to stop surface rust. Also, a passive air intake and low wattage bath fan exhaust can really help with keeping the humidity down. Thanks again for such wonderful work and all you do to share it with us. Best

I feel sadness that this chapter of life is over, but joy to know that you accomplished your goal and are ready to head home. @@benhollanders7911 Not sure what you mean by 2 years. Leo has had the boat for around 7.5 years now (June 2017), moved it to inside the workshop space in the Port Townsend shipyard nearly 3.5 years ago (Jul 2021), then took it out of the workshop space just over a year ago (Oct 2023).

They followed the truck but no video of the owner. Never part with a tool but know who will use it after you have departed. I am 76, have been collecting tools and restoring pre War machinery for most of that time. None of my grandchildren are interested in the things I love so they can have the car and house when I’m gone.
The Lathe, Mill, Welders and a lifetime collection of tools are going to a STEM teacher who I only know by her published work. I know she will use and care for these tools that have given joy to my life.
It's very sad you children nor grandchildren have any interest.
I still remember how moved I was, watching Leo building a platform in this first workshop to live on. Just he and the boat. Lonely but full of hope. Eventually a lot of people revived this gorgeous boat.

OK So they built a boat - but many boats have been built. The part of watching this for 7 years is not just a boat but the skills that created it and more, much more - the people skills that Leo possesses. Innate in my view - to manage people over such a long time on a project where every detail is perfection - is simply a miracle. A testament to good leadership - a very good captain of a beautiful ship. Thanks for sharing it!

I packed up my shop of almost ten years in 2000. Moved to a new place in Pennsylvania and I am still unpacking boxes all these years later. Can't believe the emotions that swept over me when I watched you pack up your shop and sweep the floor. Damn. Like a flood....

I saw Tally Ho, derelict and on the hard in Brookings over a decade ago. It is amazing to see her again, now a bristol yacht and afloat. Fantastic voyage so far! I wish the best to Leo, Tally Ho and her crew.
The montage @8:30 is bittersweet. I know how it feels to wrap up a years long project that you already knew would end that phase of your life. It's hard, and it's exciting, and sad, all at once.
And thus ends another chapter in the Tally Ho saga. I can't wait to watch the next chapter with Leo and the crew learning the boat and all her quirks. I only caught 6 years of your rebuild of the Tally Ho. I've always wondered if you kept the plans, the full scale plans, I'm sure you did but I just wondered. 66-year-old retired American, worked in the industrial construction trades.
I enjoyed your crew. And I enjoyed you and your crews work together on the Tally Ho. It's truly incredible the quality of the filming that you did, the quality of the build and the quality of character that you showed throughout the 7 years.

i hope the shipsaw went to your special storage place! Some of my favorite episodes were you restoring it and learning to use it. I've never seen anything else like it. Great job these last seven years. You assembled an amazing crew of people, and that says a lot about your leadership abilities and good judgment.

Brilliant episode in the life of Tally Ho, Leo your endeavours and skills kept my son and I going, my son bought a Narrowboat to live on in the uk in 2019, as with most old boats after strip out we found she actually needed a whole new bottom, not what we were expecting, after we had replaced only half the bottom with new steel Covid struck and we were not aloud in the boat yard for most of the year, we launched her in May 2024 and all is well ,the one thing that kept us going through the cold winter months of toil was watching Tally Ho evolve, thank you for the motivation .
It is a rare thing to have a dream as big as big as Tally Ho was when you found her. It is rarer still to have the dedication to stay with it, and the good fortune to find the right people to help bring the dream to life. Now, with the closing of the shop you help us, those new and those of us who have been here since the beginning, to see the fundamental shift that is taking place.

As bittersweet as leaving Port Townsend is, it's just another page being turned in the incredible journey of Tally Ho! The departure from Sequim was also a wrench but good things came of it. Fair winds and calm seas!! The journey so far has been uplifting.

Like I said years ago, this day would be bitter sweet! A mixture of sadness and excitement that Tally Ho and crew went on for new adventures! I have a personal history with this magnificent project, vessel, and the people who brought her back to life. I've followed pretty much since the beginning, I've shared the videos with my son who also enjoyed them, I lost my son to illness, and afterwards watching this project progress was one of the few things that help me continue life, with my wife I've gotten to see Tally Ho in person and stand on her deck as well as see the shop. And finally she will be part of me, hopefully, for the rest of my life.

I really didn't expect to shed tears during this video. But I did cry, feeling both joy for Leo's dream come true and a hollow sadness in knowing I wouldn't see Tally Ho around the PT boatyard anymore. Mixed feelings on this. So grateful for your sharing so much of your time and talent with all of us. So excited for you to enjoy the rewards of all your hard work. So melancholy to know that this is mostly over and done with.
I suppose the whole point of this was for you and Tally Ho to eventually sail away, but there is no small part of me that wanted to keep you here in the PNW, where we appreciate good art, craft and showmanship (you are truly a showman).
All that said, I do hope when you return to Port Townsend for a final "thank you" that you allow those of us that can to also come see you to pay our respects. Publishing a schedule for visits would earn you a great amount of good will from not just the people in town, but from many more outside of Port Townsend that have stayed with you all these years.

Wow. It sort of snuck up on me. Feels like yesterday that you were still working towards stepping the mast. Just a couple of days since pouring the keel. Maybe a week since you were cutting the frames into shape. In such a short time we went from construction site to ship. Amazing. It's sad, in a way, but also exciting, since this is what it has all been about. I'm really looking forwards to what's coming next, and I am really glad Patrick's there. He's such a character. Leo, I'm sure you tool care of this but in case you didn't, I have some tips (from painful experience) for leaving your tools in the trailer for a NW winter. Make sure to coat all the cast iron and raw steel parts with a paste wax or other protectant to stop surface rust. Also, a passive air intake and low wattage bath fan exhaust can really help with keeping the humidity down. Thanks again for such wonderful work and all you do to share it with us. Best
Vaseline works great and it is not expensive.
I think he did. Someone wrote "remove with acetone" on the top of one of the saw tables and I guessed that's in reference to the coating applied.
i've loved watching your're journey Leo, even worked in Underfall yard back before the fire (only antifouling a 70 ft from cardiff on the slip).
