Hi Remi 👋 Loved your video. I’m 55 years old and I was born in Sasebo. I have never been to Japan & seeing where I was born has been on my bucket list for so long. I had a trip booked and then COVID hit & I had to cancel. I’m going to download your checklist.
Question 🙋‍♂️: Do you recommend staying in Nagasaki & just taking the train to Sasebo? Do you think 1 week will be enough or would I need more time? Do you think checking out Tokyo is worth it? I live in a small town in Texas & I have always wanted to visit New York 🗽 & I can only imagine that Tokyo is the equivalent in Japan 🇯🇵 Thank you in advance. Ps How wonderful that most have been to share that experience with your father. 🤗

@@paulv8453 hi! I'm so glad you enjoyed my video and found it helpful. I have never been to Sasebo but it looks like by train it's about 2.5 hrs from the main area of Nagasaki (where this video was filmed).
That being said, if your main objective is to explore the area you were born in, I'd recommend staying in Sasebo and taking your time exploring what the area offers.
I recommend sticking to the Kyushu region if you only have a week. Sasebo is located between Nagasaki (2.5 hrs away) and Fukuoka (2 hrs away).
However, I typically recommend at least 2-3 weeks if you plan to visit multiple regions.
Tokyo has so much to offer, and it is worth visiting. It's on the other side of Japan, so I'd recommend flying from Kyushu to Tokyo to save time.
Sorry, this answer is a bit scrambled, but I hope it was a little helpful! :)

Great video! I was born in Nagasaki and this is my mother’s hometown (I’m 1/2 Japanese). My mother who lives with me here in the US, is a “hibakusha” (atomic bomb survivor) and I just visited the museum last November after not visiting Nagasaki for 35 years. It was amazing visiting after so long and more beautiful than I remembered. I am taking my 19 year old daughter to Japan this summer for the first time and I can’t wait for her to experience part of her family culture and heritage.

oh wow. thank you so much for sharing your family's story with me! Nagasaki is truly such a special place. I was not expecting to be as moved as I was. Not just after visiting the museum, but the overall vibe of the area just made me feel so at peace. the trip you have planned with your daughter sounds incredible! I hope you both have an amazing trip. thanks again for taking the time to reach out and leave a note!

What a wonderful way for me to re-live and document this trip. What a great start to a 5week adventure that you and I will definitely do again. And, YES, I agree Nagasaki was a BIG surprise, what a wonderful city with an important historical background.

Last time we were in Nagasaki, we went to midnight mass on Christmas Eve at Oura Church. Even though we aren’t that religions, it was quite magical just because of the history of the church and the kind people who sat next to us and could tell we were visitors. They made us feel so welcomed.

Thanks for sharing! Nagasaki is definitely one of my favourite city on the 4 main islands by far! Originally, I went there to witness its legacy as one of Japan’s leading centre of international commerce for roughly 4 centuries. But, it was the scenery and quaintness that touched heart! Part of the city gives off such nostalgic vibe, it feels as if I were in the 70s/80s of a major East Asian city. Nagasaki and the rest of Kyushu are absolutely on top of my list when I visit Japan again. Tokyo and Osaka will be kept to a minimum.

Other than walking, was it easy to get around? Our cruise will be at the port for a day and we are thinking of taking the tram, unless you think taxis might be okay to take? So far, I know we’d like to go to the atomic bomb museum and explore around Glover Park maybe. thank you for your videos. They’re really good!

Either the railway or taxi would be fine! Railway was the easiest to navigate. We struggled a bit with the buses because unlike bigger cities a lot of the names were in Japanese characters only. I hope this was helpful! I’m excited for you to experience Nagasaki! I hope you have an amazing time.

I wouldn't necessarily say that! There's definitely major attractions to visit but Nagasaki in general isn't as big as other major cities in Japan. It's more small town vibes. I think the most popular attractions are the Peace Memorial Museum and Park, Glover Garden, Chinatown and Huis Ten Bosch.
Although on the smaller side, Nagasaki is one of my favorite places to visit in Japan. I don't know how to explain it but the slowed down pace and peaceful energy of the area is
