  • I ordered a variety of oyster mushroom plugs from mushroom mountain and put them into poplar logs following the instructions. You'll see my results at the end of the video!

Its best to let the logs sit for two weeks after cutting before inoculating. Trees have anti-fungal properties that can ruin your mycelium.

My wax fell off the first year, stopped waxing and had just as many shiitake mushrooms. I always use white oak for shiitake and poplar/aspen for oyster.

you need to tightly stack the logs until they are fully colonized before standing them up. also using nails and screws to hold it together is bad, because iron is anti fungal. sealing the logs on the ends might keep moister in but it also keeps it out. you can get a cheap chemical sprayer and just fill it with water to spray the logs when there getting dry and keep the logs where you can keep an eye on them.

Informative video! Have several questions, will these mushrooms spawn on live trees? If so will it slowly kill the tree? Have several popular trees growing in a stand with oaks, don't really want them but I don't want to cut them down.
Also would like to know if you are posting on the alternative hobbiest channel where your previous videos would be welcome.

Little late to reply I’m sure, but they will not grow on or kill a live tree, as oysters aren’t a parasitic species like some others are. If the trees are recently dead/chopped down its perfect for this type of mushroom.

As long as the logs have set long enough for the trees natural anti fungals.

also he stood them up right after inoculating and sealed the top to keep the moister in, but didn't realize that it also keeps it out. that's why the top is doing nothing and the rest looks sad.

Never quite got why people get such a hard-on shooting off guns. Tiny, puny little bits of metal that you can't see fly that makes a Small hole?! That's why I prefer a catapult. You've never truly lived til you have taken down an elk with a catapult!
