- How to grow mushrooms using plug spawn, aka mushroom spawn, on logs. I grow oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms this way. Foraging vids: goo.gl/UqWoPZ Sub here: goo.gl/3zM702
Its easy to grow mushrooms on logs using plug spawn. The plugs are wooden dowels that have oyster mushroom (or whatever variety you ordered) spawn inoculated into them. Get some fresh oak or birch logs and off you go.
I bought the spore online here: amzn.to/2sL2icG
You can buy beeswax here: amzn.to/2sCc9RS
And food grade soy wax here: amzn.to/2sCdoAz
Growing mushrooms can take a few months or years, depending on the type of fungi you want to grow. I like growing oysters as they taste great and are easy to raise, and mature quickly.
Be sure to use freshly cut logs for this. Drill the holes in an offset pattern, pound in the plug spawn with a rubber mallet, and cover the dowels and ends of the log with beeswax or soy wax.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.
it would be fun to have a mushroom garden in the backyard, time will tell!
I cant find an update vid. how are they doing? Also I subbed and belled when you said the magic words "Twin Peaks" XD
Have the logs spoken yet?
hey ,if anyone else wants to learn about how do you grow mushrooms at home try Vaxicorn Mushroom Maker Guide (just google it ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my partner got amazing success with it.
@@gardenfork Just thought I would point out your disclaimer about editorial excerpts is non-binding and would not hold up in a court of law.
My dad is a mushroom grower ... my son (10) helps him inoculate logs every few months :-) they grow Shiitake, oyster (regular, pink, and blue), lion mane
This is very different from how my dad does it, he makes a paste with saw dust and the spores, but also drills the holes and packs the holes, then he waxed the tops of the holes ... what setup do you plan to use to shock the logs to encourage the mushrooms to pop? out?
you dad is more advanced than me, for sure. if the logs don't grow out on their own i will soak them in a tub. thx!
Where is the follow-up video? I looked all over the channel...
My brother in law does this & sales the fruit, so I know a little about it. I think this is the best home video on growing log mushrooms.
It is not fruit
My boyfriend and I just attended the Mother Earth News Fair in Burlington Vt and a vendor was selling sawdust bricks you could grow mushrooms on! Way too cool to pass up so we bought the shiitake kit and I just harvested a ton today. Very cool, Eric! Can wait to see the progress!
+Marie Faucher yeah!
She is so hilarious with her observations/speculations/comments! This is a super cool video - makes me actually think for a second I might do this but then I'm left with simply being impressed that he went to all this to do it. Cool! Informative! She asks great questions.
I love when your wife asks you questions. She always asks just what I was wanting to know. 😁
yes, i always presume people can read my mind. thx!
And she has the best laugh!
I'm talking bout for a second there I thought she was my enter thoughts
Loved the lay out of this video and the way you guys asked/ answered questions we were all thinking through out the video
You are doing great! Love your videos! They are helpful- thanks! Your wife is so helpful and cool! She helps remind us of what we are searching for.... yountwo make an excellent team! Thanks so much! Love you guys! Can’t wait until next vid!
Happy mushrooming. Best wishes Bob.
+BobMels Gardens thx Bob!
You are an absolutely adorable couple
Go for it!
Perfect Twin Peaks drop there. I was so glad when you put your ear to the log :)
My man literally had all PPE covered. Nice
This vid is epic! LOVE IT!!! Any updates available?
Thank you for a very informative how to video.
I grow mushrooms...and just blow the spores from my old deadouts or from shit I find or use a paper towel to spread bits of my prints in the air and or wood. *& they grow* Its crazy!
I always call my mom & tell her "I am a mushroom fairy"
Mushrooms are awesome! Everyone should spread spores.
It can only die or feed you. Those trees will always have rot.
I love your channel. Your content is the best thing on a good evening after "my pick me up" you know "water melon sugar"
Hi guys, excellent video :), Have you had any success yet with the mushrooms? or is it still too early? would love to know as we will be doing some next spring here in the UK on our channel. Thanks again, Jo and Dave x
Ya’ll really are what seems to be the almost perfect couple! I love y’all!,,
may give this a try. i've always wanted to. thanks for sharing
+Hidden Meadow Farm -The Urban Homestead same thinking here. I finally ordered the plugs. Next time you drop an oak order these.
Great video! thank you for making! I want to put some Lions mane mushroom plugs into a Black Walnut stump I have in my yard.
Great video! Are there other things you can use besides wax?
cool! looking forward to the end result video
yes, now i need to water my mushroom logs. never thought i'd have that on my to do list!
About 20 of us in the Garden Club inoculated logs with shiitake spores / canning wax spring 2016 plus planted wine cap spores in our gardens; only 1 out of 20 of us were successful - she had an automatic sprinkler on her garden. I've been meaning to call the company to see where we went wrong in and whether it's too late to make something happen. Very disappointing because we were all excited to get mushrooms!
+Nancy Clayton watering is key. Thx!
they also must be protected from direct sunlight @@gardenfork
here's several tips to try
select the top variety - there are many available.
grow them in the best conditions - some such as oyster muchrooms like cool humid areas and may be put outdoors
(I discovered these and the reasons they work on Gregs Mushroom Grower site )
Smart.... wax is something I would not have thought of!
Did you end up with mushrooms? I haven't seen a follow up yet.
how did these ever turn out? i am interested in trying this version of growing mushrooms!
They will work, the more plug spawn you use, the higher the chance of success is (and the faster your colonization will be). I assume it takes a year to colonize though, wood is pretty dense lol. At home you can make your own (infinite) supply of spawn, use agar, pre-colonized grain, or LC, add it to the dowels, and you are set. If you are looking for a fast resulting choice, you can get a bag of colonized oyster spawn, fruit them at home, then once they are fully flushed out, add the spawn in layers between wood chips and straw.
Clearly they did not work. There is no follow up video or anymore mention of these mushroom spore/inoculated dowls experiment.
Love mushrooms, what a fun idea! How will they manage the winter ? Or do you need to plant new ones ?
it all depends on the type of mushroom. some need several years to grow, so will over winter just fine. thx!
Great video!
I have a lot of leftover golden oysters, a lot are past Their Prime and on their way out .. I brought home a log that had Goldens on it. What can I do with the leftover oysters if anything to help my log grow more.?
This is really cool and very fascinating!
I found some really large mushroom in my backyard last week and googled the images and it came up with an edible mushroom. But, never heard of it before and didn't know if it would be really safe from my backyard.
what kind of mushroom is in your backyard?
You would ask me that. I forgot the name and I deleted the picture I took to search Google images to find the name of it.
With wild mushrooms it's best to have an expert identify it if unsure there are very similar shrooms such as the matsutake which is a sought after gourmet food too easily mistaken for the destroying angel which can kill with one small bite growing side by side for example there are likely mushroom buyers most anywhere which is a safe and free way to check any you may have questions about. @@russtex
is it ok for the dowel to be poking out of the log a bit like 1/4" like you had or is it ideal to have them inset so you can fill a shallow hole with bees wax..
can i use the plug spwan in side a plastic bag with sawdust and grain ?
I appreciate the questions the camera operator was asking. I was like, yeah, I want to know that too.
But also, you handled the dowels barehanded...
Wouldn’t there be risk for contamination?? Thanks
"Gravity is not too strong here" hahaha that's great
I was laughing on that too... Nice one
Just copped some lions mane mushroom plug spawns😎
More vids on mushrooms! I tried growing some from spore prints and the mycellium grew mold!
best to start off with these plugs. i tried putting some old oyster mushrooms under the bark of dead trees. did not work.
best bet is to add hydrogen peroxide with water to your spray bottle... mushroom mycelium naturally produce peroxidase compounds to kill off mould spores so it doesn't harm healthy mycelium.
@Squigly Boom. spores need to hydrate properly before they grow. if you're using tap water then you'll have no luck as the chlorine needs to evaporate over the period of 12-24 hours. or you could boil it and then let it cool.
Welcome to mycology ! Mold is our worst enemy trust me
Best to have a dedicated sterile area to do everything
Beeswax has antifungal properties how does this work did you produce?
How often do you water your logs and how much water do you give it
Can i use antique protect beeswax? I know it's meant for protecting antique furniture
thanks for sharing this! What its the best log to grow Shiitakes in?
Hard wood oak
How did they turn out?
Thanks for this!
go get some logs!
double boilers are good for wax, basically just take two pots with one larger than the other and put the wax in the smaller one and put the smaller one in the bigger one with some water.
“Mushroom mycelium, I think that’s what this is” and I’m out lol
Hello! This was a great video, however I can't seem to find the followup!! How did these logs do? I am looking to do this myself with some lion's mane. Thanks!
my logs haven't bloomed yet, i'll make a vid when it happens. thx!
GardenFork wow, a year passed, figured it would have happened already. Interesting
Where's the follow-up video? I couldn't find it! Great video
Love your vdo 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Could this be done on 24" oak firewood??
Hi where do you buy
Is it actually necessary to scrape the logs clean? I haven't seen this process recommended on any of the sites that sell mushroom dowels or spawn.
I am still learning myself but some recommend removing any lichen or existing fungus. I would stick with the experts at Fungi Perfecti. Good luck!
Can you use maple logs?
Do the logs have to be fresh? ie: not dead trees that were recently cut. I missed the part about sealing in wax when I had tried this...thanks for the video
fresh logs don't have any other spores or organisms usually. this give the mushroom spawn a better chance of succeeding. older logs already have lots of organisms that have moved in. thx!
Thanks! Can't wait to see your result!
"One day my log will have something to say about this." 😄
This is Great ! Will make a video .
yes let me know when!
Any updates did it work?
Is birch best for chanterelle mushrooms or a harder wood? I want to grow some
Birch is good, oak is great also
What was that shadow near end
can you also grow using this type of spawn plug in a straw substrate? or does it HAVE to be in a log???
You could just Put the dowels in some sterilised straw, but i guess there are better ways of doing it, for example with grain spawn
I wish you guys were my neighbors
that would be cool, wouldn't it? eric.
I live in q back unit apartment and want to try this with the stump out back
Does it matter how big the log is (diameter, length)? Can I do smaller branches (ie 1/2” diameter)? I wonder if the bigger logs have more sapwood (food) for the fungus so thicker logs produce longer (get mushrooms for years and years vs just a year or two).
Also, saw another vid where someone shocks the inoculated log with cold ice spring water overnight, which makes the fungus think it’s spring and tricks it into sprouting mushrooms in a few days
The directions that came with the plugs said 4-6” diameter. And yes, shocking them seems to work. Thx!
You should use fresh logs that are allowed to sit for two weeks after cutting!
Do woodland critters eat mushrooms?
Is there an update video?
I live in VT, in zone 4. I’d like to grow lions mane. When is the best time to do this project?
Check with the the Fungi Perfecti guys. They are experts.
Thank you GarndenFork
SnakeRiverFishing thank you SRF
I have some logs in my garage that are probably a year old. If they are dry and arent decaying and dont have any signs of being invaded by a potentially threatening organism would you say its safe to try to use them?
It’s a lot of work putting spore plugs into a log, I would use fresh cut logs. Competing organism could very well already be in your garage logs. Thx!
GardenFork Understood 👍 I would hate for all that work to go for nothing
Any progress yet? I'm the only one in my house who eats mushrooms. Still think it be nice to have a mushroom garden. Can you do a little identifier and maybe a run down of tastes of mushrooms for some dishes you do? I'd appreciate that. Like I said I'm the only one eating them so I don't want to buy an expensive mushroom and have it taste like the button mushrooms I buy for half the price. Just be cool if you could help me out or have a link to explain the world of flavors that they provide.
mushroom flavors are very subtle. the oyster mushrooms that i grow and forage taste similar to button mushrooms, but i am not a culinary expert! you might be better off with the store bought ones. thx!
Can you wax the ends after you cut the logs or do you have to wait a couple weeks ?
It depends on who you ask, but I say do it when you have the time. Thx!
GardenFork okay thanks
Sorry to seem finicky, but I think you got the word spore mixed up with spawn. A spore is the seed like thing that comes out of the fruiting body (mushroom), mushroom spawn is the inoculated material that has the mycelium.
Extra 'thumb up' for the pooch 🐶
I'm guessing none of these logs produced mushrooms? Did you water them with tap water? What do you think went wrong?
Watch as he bangs them into the logs. He knocks off all the mycelium.
Too smart!
It's been a little more than three months since you posted this video. How did it turn out?
some of the plugs pushed up and out of the logs, but most have stayed in. the wax seems to have worn off a bit. there is a hint of fungus growing around the plugs, but no flush of mushrooms yet. From what I've learned since this initial log project is it takes longer than one thinks, even with oyster mushrooms. I hope to have mushrooms next spring. thx!
BTW, i also learned its important to water the logs each week. who knew?
Live and learn, right? Thanks for the update.
What ever happened with this? Just check through the channel looking for an update and didn't see one! Got some mushroom spawn plugs for Christmas and want to go give this a shot.
Why do you have to put them on a pallet? I don't have any trees and I live down south so its hot and dry for a lot of the year. My idea was to just lay the logs on top of the dirt between 2 rows of vegetables. Laying them on the soil will keep the logs moist and seems like it would help the mycelium spread faster by letting the log start to decompose. Thoughts anyone?
Hi Cory, Mbe check with the Fungi Perfecti website on your plan. I believe keeping them in shade is very important. Not sure about pallets in the South though. Thx!
Dimana kami bisa mendapatkan penyumbatnya?
That log will look totally different once the mushrooms start to grow. Onelonleyfarmer would know a lot about mushrooms. You could also probably use hay.
i am reading about using woodchips as well. i have a free source of those. thx!
Mushroom cultavists dont want you to know this...but you CAN buy fresh mushrooms from your grocery store & make a spore print (LOOK IT UP...ITS EASY)) Just wipe a little off on a paper towel & put it as many locations as you can. Leaves. Live wood, rot, WIND. It DOESN'T MATTER.
It will grow. Maybe not right there..just look around.
Ulk, I don't think I can eat mushrooms again?
why would you be wire brushing that log? You want as much moisture as you can get.
So, as you do not have a follow up video I am assuming this did not work out for you?
Could it be better to use more rotten wood ?
+John Doe no because the wood has already been infiltrated with other competing organisms thx!
I have always wanted to grow mushroom, but I can't tell one tree from another, so I would never know which mushrooms to put into what log
if you buy the mushroom spore listed in the text below the video, you will know what kind you are putting into the log. thx!
Thank you
I’m assuming it didn’t go well because there’s been no updates for years lol
Fungi!!!
link to follow-up
What happend next? Where is video?
Many recognize Black and Decker as the first creator of the cordless drill in 1961 😧
Why no follow up?
Why not to cover with plastic?
You shouldn't use bees wax to seal mushroom logs but cause mice like to eat it and will pick your logs clean.
Its a curious thing inoculating wood with inoculated wood lol
Didnt work yes?
I'm trying to get golden oyster plugs
I bought mine in an online store
On Instagram ¿
healerchris 02………}
If you live in a place that gets cold winter You do not want to use bees wax
Paraffin wax is much cheaper and will work just as good.
Good to know Mark, thx for that!
First of all don't scratch the log at all, it causes opening for wild spores
Anyone ever done this on a live tree?
