So for a special transitional food unit, would say a pop up selling drinks be within that realm? Pop up as in, a canopy, probably a generator Appliances, a banner, ya know. Something simple

most states will still permit you as a mobile food vendor and may require date specific permitting for a certain time very similar to food trucks

Any guidance on a food "tent". I would have a trailer with access to storage, fresh water, etc but all food would be grilled on site or prepared in home kitchen. Just thouggt this would be a great way to start to build up to a truck purchase.

Starting a food tent can be a fantastic way to test your culinary business idea and build up to a full food truck purchase in Michigan. It allows you to gain valuable experience, understand your target market, and fine-tune your menu and operations before making a larger investment. Here are some guidance and tips to help you get started:
Market Research: Begin by researching the local food scene in Michigan and identify potential locations where you can set up your food tent. Look for events, festivals, farmer's markets, and other gatherings where you can attract a good flow of customers.
Legal Requirements: Before you start operating, familiarize yourself with the specific permits, licenses, and regulations required to run a food tent in Michigan. This may include health department permits, food handling certifications, and business licenses. Check with your local health department and small business association for guidance.
Menu Selection: Design a simple and appealing menu that suits the type of events you plan to attend. Since you'll have limited space and resources compared to a food truck, focus on a few signature dishes that you can execute well and efficiently.
Sourcing Ingredients: Since you'll be preparing food on-site, it's essential to have reliable suppliers for fresh ingredients. Consider partnering with local farmers or suppliers to source fresh and seasonal produce.
Food Safety and Hygiene: Maintain high standards of food safety and hygiene in both your home kitchen (where the food is prepared) and the food tent. Keep raw and cooked foods separate, regularly sanitize surfaces, and follow best practices for safe food handling.
Equipment and Setup: Invest in good quality grilling equipment that is easy to transport and set up. Think about the layout of your food tent to ensure a smooth workflow for food preparation and serving. Create an eye-catching and inviting setup to attract customers.
Branding and Marketing: Come up with a catchy and memorable brand name for your food tent. Design a logo and use consistent branding on your tent, menu, and any marketing materials. Utilize social media platforms and local event listings to promote your food tent and upcoming locations.
Pricing Strategy: Determine your pricing strategy by considering the cost of ingredients, equipment, and overhead expenses. Also, research the pricing of similar food vendors in your area to stay competitive.
Customer Feedback: Encourage customers to provide feedback on your dishes and service. Feedback will be invaluable as you refine your menu and offerings.
Be Adaptable: Operating a food tent can be challenging, but flexibility is key. Be prepared to adjust your menu or offerings based on customer preferences and event feedback.
Learn from Experience: Treat this as a learning experience and be open to learning from any challenges you encounter. The insights gained from running a food tent will be invaluable when you decide to upgrade to a food truck.
Remember that building a successful food business takes time and effort. By starting with a food tent, you can mitigate some of the risks and gain practical knowledge, setting yourself up for a smoother transition to a food truck when the time is right. Good luck with your venture!

I have a question, I have a food truck, I want to put it on land permanently, what permits and licenses do I need?
    for instance,
Do I need a commissary license?
parking permit, even though I own the land?
Driver's license? even though the food truck doesn't move?

Hello you will need to reach out to your helath departmnet and potentially the business devlepoment office in your city or county, the land may fall under zoning laws even on your own property meaning they would be looking at it to be zoned commercial and or residential. these 2 gov offices will be the first place to start. YOU MAY need to be associated with a commecial kitchen in your county.

Do I need an L.L.C. before applying for these other licenses? I'm excited and anxious to start my food truck. I want to hit the ground running so I'm thrilled when I find great sources like this!

    • @foodtruckfreeks
      @foodtruckfreeks  2 роки тому

yes it is always best to have LLC or C or S corp prior to . Many states licenses are applied fo after the city or county though may require a "commercial kitchen " as a base of operation and if so than normally the comemcial kitchen will be the "business address" as you cant use a PO box or home sicne the business does not take place there.

"This can be done without a commissary though correct? With an STFU license or whatever" < The answer to this needs to be clarified. @Food Truck Freeks reply says that there must be a commissary but it is my understanding that a commissary is not a necessity when operating as a licensed STFU! See: www.michigan.gov/mdard/licensing/food/service

hello when it comes to michigan they require a commercial kitchen to be base of operation and must return food trucks to that location very 24 hrs.

@@foodtruckfreeks unless you have the STFU License, which nullifies the necessities of a commissary kitchen 😁

@@ProfitJesus i’m curious how that would work if you wanted to use your food truck/cart repeatedly every weekend and if they would let you use it consecutively like that🤔 but I guess if you turned in the paperwork every Monday stating what event (area) you were doing that weekend it should be legit right ?
I’m thinking this would be the only way to do it without a commissary kitchen whether or not you would be able to do it every weekend 🤷‍♂️ at least you would be able to do events throughout the year without having one
