Love it! I listened to Johnny Otis on KFOX every night and even made it to the live taping of his tv show a few times around '56-'57'. What a treat to see this show 68 years later. Saw him and Shuggie at Cal Poly SLO about '70?
I remember in later years, late sixties or early seventies, his broadcasts. The show featured a short theme song that repeated the phrase " Johnny Otis, Johnny Otis... 🎶...."
Uncle Johnny! My father and he were inseparable from their early 20's.Preston Love's Omaha BBQ album, as well as many singles was produced by Johnny.I went to L.A.and played with him on Alto mid eighties.Shugg was back in the group so it was family for me! .
Remembering Johnny Otis (Ioannis Alexandros Veliotes) today on December 28, the day he was born in 1905, a son of poor Greek immigrants who chose to live his professional and personal life as a member of the African-American community. He wrote, "As a kid I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black." His contribution to modern American music was nonpareil as this awesome video proves without a doubt. RIP Johnny, you will never be forgotten.
Heard the great Lionel Hampton live at the Capital Jazz Festival in London 1980. His big band was mainly composed of former Ellington and Basie former band members. Superb and unforgettable.
Hand Jive was invented in a small club in Soho London and popularised in the youth show "6.5 SPECIAL" on BBC-TV. But it was the brilliant Johnny Otis who added the Bo Diddley rhythm.
Not a false note in this show,…including segue into commercials. Which are homespun but damned effective as well. Top talent all the way around. Oh, to have those old studio tapes!!!
I remember in thff Ed mid late seventies I was a kid young teen into the oldies and Johnny Otis was one of the djs on KRLA. What I really like about him historically was how he championed so many up and coming or undiscovered artist without trying to rip them off. I knew he was a musician too, but I didn’t know he had such a unique style. And Lionel Hampton on vibraphone is just badass. This is absolutely awesome archival footage. And the interference lines on the tv take me back to the good ol/ bad ol days.
Otis, sadly underrated, was totally instrumental (pun so intended) in Left Coast jazz circles and ‘crossed over’ in marketing and musical terms. Totally solid performers at game. Almost Sullivan-level in L.A. scene.
just heard of him unfortunately, had no idea he did that song and was so instrumental in music along with Lionel Hampton. These Ads are a trip and nothing has really changed has it?
Tom Dooley? That's like being on the PA turnpike at speed and throwing your car into park! Talk about L7 square🤮 Stay with me by Mel Williams was a treat, can't go wrong with Lionel Hampton 👍

That shows you how bad politicians have screwed America up the inflation is so high it can't never be paid off and one day it's going to crash hopefully I'll be gone .,.
It was actually very brave in the racist '50s that a local car dealership would support the show. Nat King Cole Show from the same era never found an advertiser at all.
It's funny you say that considering most people including thought Johnny Otis was "black.". He never said that he was Greek. The Nat King Show was a very polished TV show...very classy.
Hi, I'm a french student who's trying to make a podcast about Jackie Shane, do you know where I can find the episode where she is performing Lucille by Little Richard ? Thanks a lot :)
Is it me, or anytime that white people other than Johnny came on, it was a HUGE DOWNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and by the way, how many people had 50 bucks to spend on a car loan then? If many, then it was a much better time. Also, just curious what is at the address of this dealership today? Anyway, this wasn't a kinoscope, it is on video tape which was officially commercialized and available at the end of 1958, President Eisenhower even demonstrated it.

Who else is here because of Snatch and the Poontangs?

Johnny, Hamp, Mel and Marie were all great. Just a shame about the terrible ads spoiling the flow of the show.
Yes, unbelievable crap ads integrated into the program.

It’s folk music in the style of the Kingston Trio.
@@bb1111116 I get that, but it's not just them. That Barris lady and the Eligibles were just boring drek really.
