COOL CLIP AND BLACK AND WHITE VIDEO GIVES IT CREEDENCE JOHNNY OTIS GREAT VOCALS SHUGGIE ON RHYTHM AND OF COURSE ROY B WITH THE ENDLESS SEA OF LICKS AND TRICKS THANKS FOR THIS THROWBACK GEM 💎
Wow, thanks for this. I haven't listened to Roy Buchanan in over 20 years. I've forgotten how great he was. And of course Shuggie, who unfortunately because of his lack of productivity in recording industry almost completely left my memories. But how sweet is and was in those days. I never knew this even happened.
Yeah I was about 7 or 8 years old and living in Long Beach when I saw him on TV and really flipped for his blues! He was a great player along with his brother Shuggie, but at that time in the mid 50's, he was not as popular as Lawrence Welk so Johnnie Otis was pre-empted and gone from TV. Otis was my blues introduction and I'm still a big fan thanks to his music!
Shuggie jammed with every Blues guitar legend from the age of 7 yrs old or some incredible age long before we raved about Jonny Lang or Joe Bonamassa. At 12 he was playing alongside T Bone Walker, Freddie King,BB, so as great as Roy Buchanan was it was big deal for Shuggie.. His style belied his very tender age. Listen out for the slow 12 bar solo "Shuggies Chittlin' Blues" on Preston Loves CD "Omaha Bar-B-Q".( Mindblowin' guitar work for a 13 yr old)
Shuggie Otis recorded the original version of STRAWBERRY LETTER 23. George Johnson of the Johnson Brothers was dating one of Otis' cousins when he found it on Otis' 1972 album FREEDOM OF FLIGHT. In 1977, with production by Quincy Jones, The Johnsons Brother remade it with a more dance oriented sound and it topped the Pop and R&B charts!
@Jazzguts I've been a Shuggie Otis fan since 1970...first heard a track called "Shuggies Chittlin Blues" in that year and couldn't believe it was a teen doing it. One of the finest Blues guitar solos ever. Shuggie is a killer guitarist & comes from a talented family.
thank you SO much for posting this! my "uncle" Ralph Grinter introduced me to Johnny back around the time of a double-album, seeing him and Shuggie WITH Roy, is freakin' amazing.
@Jazzguts I understand your position and you make a good point. The problem with making an assessment based on what we see on youtube or even the 1971 PBS documentary on Roy. I was fortunate enough to have access to the outtakes for the 1971 PBS & the 1977 Austin City Limits gigs. Less than 10% of the material made the transition to production. Consistent with the music business Roy had no control over content. Ahhh the music business...At least it's predictable!
This is from a PBS special about Buchanan in the early '70's, putting him in a variety of musical settings to show him off. Johnny Otis, Mundell Lowe, and others were just happy to participate and, perhaps, gain some exposure from it.
In spite of rampant racism Johnny Otis was a chargin' rock n roller I grew up with! Changed my musical taste to R & B permanently! Big thanks to J.O! Rip brother!
@@digiworxdigitalmediaproduc5034 He was able to pass as black, as did (and still do) many Greeks. Science has already proven a genetic link between the two peoples.
It looks to me like Roy was just sitting in for a couple of numbers, so Shuggie was laying back. The star of this set up was Johnny Otis. He must have invited Roy to sit in. It looks like he was saying goodbye to him at the end there. I saw Shuggie in Ottawa, Canada in the early 1970's with T-Bone Walker. He struck me as a quiet guy at the time. I doubt if he gave a rat's fanny about trading licks with Roy. Even T-Bone was trying to egg him on. Maybe it was dope. Shuggie was very very relaxed.
I knew Johnny and Shuggie used to hang out at their studio with my, then husband Lawrence Dickens aka Slim, as a matter of fact Johnnie married us in his studio 1975. Those were good times. RIP Johnnie. Shuggie' s wife was Mercy at that time she was really nice I liked her.
@vampyros1 this is from a tv special on roy, so it's only natural that he be featured. Besides, he does let shuggie get in a quick bit at 1'30''. And, at the time shuggie was not even remotely in roy's class, so it makes sense that shuggie hung back on rhythm.
God, Shuggie is my hero. I'd love to talk to him about the making of ['74] "Inspiration Information". It's like a mix of two of my favorite things in the world - Sly Stone and The High Llamas!
Wow!! That Is Some Really Amazing & Awesome Blues Singing And Playing Playing Performance By Johnny Otis, His Son, Shuggie Otis, Roy Buchanan & The Band!! A Huge Big Thumbs Up!! Blues On!! - Big Will / The Super Blues Universe
Who’s the kid playing bass? My friend and I used to watch the Johnny Otis show every week. Otis Redding was on it. Also Mighty Mouth Evans and the Three Tons of Joy were regulars. Good stuff.
OK, I thought it was just me,but reading the other posts....... Roy B is a total Gig Hog! Yes, he was one of the best guitarists on the planet, but give me a break! Let Shuggie take one damn solo!
Roy was asked to play by Johnny & when his solo was done Johnny wanted him to play more ,what was Roy supposed to do . Don't you think they did more than one song ? I'm sure Shuggie got to play & it has nothing to do with Roy being a hog , he was asked to play ... If memory serves this was from a documentary on Roy not Shuggie.
@speck444 I agree with you; you think he'd have had the decency to let Shuggie knock a few licks down, but big Roy was just too damned great to let anyone else play. And yes, I am being sarcastic. Geez...
@Sealy57 I would have giving Shuggie a nice solo break and see what fire he would have brought in,so I could take a solo round inspired and all, that's musician ship brother giving another a chance, I'll tell you Shuggie is a damn good Blues man I've heard that guy fire up the highest building but he's a modest guy thats why I love him,Vic.
@1954tele All I'm saying here is that Shuggy is playing the role off Side man accompanying Roy while he could have played an equal solist role if Roy had a more social-jamming attitude, and for PBS,the only ones in charge are the guys with big bucks, which a musician doesn't have even if his name is Roy Buchanon, with all respect,Vic.
To ALL the armchair internet musicians hating on Roy Buchanan, I suggest you open your eyes & ears..NOTICE Johnny tells Roy to keep on playing? Oh and he was invited you TOOLS, this was taken from a PBS Special ABOUT ROY BUCHANAN..
Not true. This was part of a PBS special that was done on Roy and they simply asked numerous players/bands that Roy had formerly played with to go through some numbers to showcase Roy's talent. I'm sure if it had been a Shuggie Otis special, Roy would've been happy to play backup just as he did. I'm a fan of Shuggie Otis, but he couldn't hold a candle to Roy in this setting, and if he'd had the inclination to step up for a "head cuttin" no one was holding him back..

@Sealy57 It proves how modest and restrained Shuggie is especially as a young kid...not many kids would allow a guy to take all the space. I love Roy's playing but sometimes he overplayed.
He became known for his choice to live his professional and personal life as a member of the African-American community.[5][6][7] He wrote, "As a kid I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black."[8]
Just a couple of more thoughts on that. I was real close to the band that night. (Sitting onstage with them because I managed to bring some beer into the unlicensed venue for them.) Shuggie wasn't giving it his all that night and T-Bone was annoyed. Very likely thought that Shuggie was embarrassing him in front of the university crowd (mostly white). There was heavy racist crap happening in the US at the time. Maybe Shuggie didn't think whites were worth his time. T-Bone pointedly disagreed.
I didn't realize that Johnny Otis was Shuggie Otis's father. (Just found out from another video clip.) That throws the racial tension theory out. I'm back to lack of beer or over abundance of dope.
@Jazzguts ; They say ignorence is bliss. Try to get your head around the concept of PBS. Roy neither owned PBS nor did he control content.... . listen to shuggies solo albums and compare them to anything Roy ever did- there is no comparison- how old was shuggie when he recorded those albums? I never understood why so many people emulate Roy- he had teqnique but that was about it- the only roy album I find somewhat listenable is begginings and most of the roy fans hate that one
A pity Buchanan is only going for his own Ego and not leaving a bit of space for our great guitarist Shuggie a tragic thing that occurred at many Jam sessions, just a lack of musical and social solidarity, cause I know what Shuggie is capable of delivering,Vic.
@1954tele Remains a lack of social feeling here, I mean it's only about mister Roy,while Shuggie plays the role of sideman on this session, a darn pity,I explained this egocentric behavior earlier,no need repeating again. And for the Music Industry it sucks and it will always keep on sucking,Vic.
Another lesson in the fact the loud, sharp, piercing, over playing is NOT a pleasant thing. Shuggie Otis and his appropriate blues style and great tone would have out shined Roy Buchanan on any given day given the chance to get a word in. Sadly, sometimes the most talented are the most quiet. Great footage, thanks for sharing this with us.
I'm pretty sure that after that set Johnny gave Shuggie a good talkin' to about standing his ground and never ever letting himself get "Bogart'd" like that again!

He grew up in a black neighborhood and identified as black although both his parents were Greek immigrants.

I think Shuggie was 💯 % happy as a sideman.
