What pisses me off is no one talks about ANY of them today.. and poor Esther Mae, it’s like she didn’t exist and she was a damned PIONEER. And talented beyond words. WHY?
JOHNNY got lucky,ESTHER appeared on a talent contest,in His club,[in the 50s]She was aged 13 years old, at the time, and was recruited immediately, which was the first time I'd ever heard Her,so we both got lucky, thanks pal. This led, years later, [early 1963] my findingHer L/P,full of soul, including Her soulful " RELEASE ME" , [more gentle version than this] absolute magic, along with every other track on the L/P, He also had Big Moma Thorton, [original singer for Hound Dog,written for Her]& The Three Tons of Joy,well worth a listen,on youtube.
I read some where that Hound Dog was aimed towards Little Esther? She did not turn up, coinsidentally Big Mama was next door and recorded it within few takes. Little Esther recorded it few months later but her rendition is far from Big Mama,.
on a program, recorded long ago,the two writers of HOUND DOG, which they wrote forBIG MOMMA THORTEN,where one was aware of what had happened, told the other that it was a huge ,hit,[not by BIG MOMMA,]but some new kid, named ELVIS PRESLEY.
Saw this line up of the Johnny Otis Show in 1970 in Pasadena at an open air concert. Harvey Mandel with the Pure Food & Drug Act opened. Incredible all around. Better times, better days.
During Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's performance, Johnny Otis is at the piano, and his son Shuggie Otis, in Afro hairstyle, is behind him playing guitar. When Little Esther Phillips comes out, Johnny Otis left but Shuggie remains.
One of the Greatest Albums of All-Time! Love Eddy Cleanhead Vinson and especially Little Ester Philips!THANK YOU so much for posting! This was groundbreakingly monumental to a 22 year old like me when I first heard it!
@@jnagarya519 Sorry i don't understand... Do you mean that upi have a live LP/CD from Monterey 1970 that includes versions of 'Cleanhead's Blues' and 'Release Me' but are different takes from the one's on the video here? ... i don't have a problem BTW - I'm just curious

The blues, Miss Esther, the blues!

The stuff she does at the end here, from about 7:45 onwards, is just out of this world.
This performance is incredible! Wow. Wow. If you aren't feeling this you are dead. Soulful. Beautiful. Thanks for posting.
I adore Esther Phillips!

Should be Eddie. Sorry.
Absolutely. Esther Phillips singing Cry Me a River Blues on that album might be the best 4 minutes of live music ever recorded.
What a pleasure!, Thank you!
absolutely magnificent
Great great stuff
outstanding
Is there any more footage like this from the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival? I did see the movie PLAY MISTY FOR ME
Takes a sappy, bland top 40 Engelbert Humperdinck hit and makes it monumental!
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Zo goed
If I didn't know any better I would have thought it was Dinah Washington at first guess.
That’s not nice. Esther is her own woman.
Her sound is similar to Dinah Washington.
I have a feeling that you rarely know better...
This isn't the same as the LP, so isn't from Monterey, unless they did two shows.
Or unless they didn't puit it on the LP perhaps?
@@bobjuke4216 I have both the LP and CD. This is not the same concert.
@@bobjuke4216 The LP is actually available on youtube. Compare the two.

I just checked the album - it doesn't seem to have Release Me on it either
When peeps played instruments and awesome music. Now we have nasty perverted rap 💩 crap.
