Fun Fact: As of right now, Girafarig has over 90% usage in Gen 9 LC. This shows just how good it was before it was banned. Edit: didn't know it was banned so i fixed the comment
A few months before SV were revealed, I happened to be doing an Emerald run where I used a Girafarig because it turned out to have better stats than I was expecting. And when the trailer revealing Farigiraf came out, I actually felt pretty validated for giving the overlooked palindrome giraffe a chance.
Actually had the same thing, but for Primeape. Thing helped me in the rented mon battle frontier and swept through Norton. Then about a few years later, Annihilape came to be, and I feel validated for loving the angy monke.
I remember playing a rom hack called "inclement emerald" and they gave an enormous buff to Girafarig. They gave it the ability contrary and the move psycho boost. I named her "Redivider" and swept the elite 4 for with her.
It’s likely since opponents in Emerald don’t have too many heavy hitting Pokémon. Plus Girafarig knows Earthquake, Shadow Ball, Psychic, Return and Thunderbolt as TMs in the game.
I kinda like Psychic/Normal as a typing; you lose the resistance to fighting but gain an immunity to ghost. If you look at it from the that point of view you lose 1/3 of your weaknesses.

It's funny to think about how if Girafarig had come out one generation earlier, between Amnesia and STAB Psychic/Hyper Beam, it would have been an absolute monster
I actually edited the Gen 1 Calculator Abra to match Girafarig's stats and Normal STAB, and it doesn't do that much damage at +2. Decent for sure...Tauros is guaranteed to live a +2 Psychic and likely kill it with Body Slam and Hyper Beam. Snorlax is only 34.5 chance to 2kho with +2 Psychic. Chansey can status it and tank a physical move. Egg really sits on it and could do anything from status to blow up on it. Jynx tanks special moves and can sleep it. Zam and Starmie can paralyze it before switching out or paralyze it on the switch despite not touching it back. Agility could be used over a Normal attack to evade this going all in on setup. Idk maybe it could be like a Special tauros, deadly end game force. 85 speed is good but lacks the longevity of Slowbro, Alakazam, Starmie etc.
@@tylerd1297 Thunder at +2 is a 100.6% minimum on Starmie, 99.9% to 2HKO on Jynx, yeah Tauros can beat it out but that's Tauros. Even if Chaney uses status it's not exactly the best option. Not saying it would be top of OU but it would definitely be a threat in the tier. Like a better Slowbro.

Girafarig is highly viable in Gen 4 ZU, where its high speed and mixed offensive stats work well to make it a wallbreaker, cleaner, revenge killer, or sweeper depending on what you need for your team. Power creep and the increase in general bulk because of Eviolite left Girafarig outclassed in Gen 5 ZU by other Pokemon such as Simisear, Grumpig, Pikachu, and Gastly. for the past five years i’ve been listening to your videos on audio while driving to either college, work or across state lines. i always appreciated your audio friendly (even if unintentional) video editing. thank you
I don't understand why being normal/psychic is debilitating compared to being pure psychic. It replaces a ghost weakness with a ghost immunity and only comes with the drawback of not being resistant to fighting. Unless fighting type attacks are much more prominent than ghost attacks that's a trade I would want to take.
Yeah I think that’s the point. Gen 4 got much stronger moves for a lot of types, and fighting can use focus blast and close combat. With items to boost your move power even more, fighting types get stronger. Gen 5 brought even more strong fighting types, and even in the lower tiers they’re still strong attackers. So big G suffers more by being neutral to fighting than it gains from being immune to ghost. We often tend to think about super effective attacks being the strongest ways to deal damage. But neutral attacks can be strong too (especially with girafarig having middling stats). In a casual game you might see the power of neutral attacks if you try out gyarados. Especially when it can use physical water attacks like waterfall or aqua tail, it can do huge damage even against a Pokémon that isn’t weak to water. Or against dragon trainer, dragons usually have high attack and when they’re using strong dragon moves, it will do a lot of damage to any pokemon, even though dragon is neutral against most types
Imagine being otherwise a typical, albeit weak psychic type but dying to things psychic types are supposed to counter essentially. If girafarig was pure psychic it would at least have typical strengths and weaknesses. Also it really shouldn’t switch in on ghosts in the first place due to said middling stats and also doesn’t gaun anything offensively from being normal except maybe a mediocre STAB. It’s why some other type combos are kind of bad like poison normal since it takes away some of the upsides of the type while adding little to no benefit.
@@fishyfishyfishy500akabs8 I think that speaks to the larger problem that no type has suffered more from power creep than Normal because of its lack of resistances. It occurred to me a while back that in Gen 6 they should have made Normal a Fairy resist instead of Steel, to finally give them some semblance of defensive utility now that you need resistances instead of bulk alone to fit on teams.
Nowadays normal psychic is definitely an upgrade. Highly doubt Indeedee-F would be NEARLY as good in VGC if she just died to shadow ball. Same thing with Farig.
yes, resisting fight, at least in gen four is UCH more important than inmuneity to ghost. Cureently in gen 9 it isn't cuz of how much viable ghost types there are, but back then, normal types had it rough
As someone who’s always loved Girafarig for a few years now, I was so happy that he would just be in SV, so when his evolution got revealed I was so overjoyed… not only did we get an amazing design (it’s very unique I like that the heads fused instead of just making the tail bigger) , but it’s so cool seeing it and it’s evolution have a presence in competitive
Nice way to not only bring up Girafarig, but also it's new evolution in Farigiraf. Much like its fellow gen 2 fan favorite, Dunsparce, it finally got the evolution people have been asking for. Now the question is: when are we getting the Dunsparce/Dudunsparce video?
I remember that fan game pokemon Insurgence added mega-evolution to gen6 Girafarig. Megaevolving made its tail head huge, it get +30 to defense and sp. defefense and +40 to sp. attack. It also recieved new signiture ability upon mega-evolving which turned all biting moves into special moves with 30% power boost. To make this work game also gave girafarig acces to elemental fang moves as well as STAB Hyper fang (with this ability it would have 117 base power comming of 140 sp. attack). In gen 7 it would then gain Psychic fangs to use with this too.
Girafarig's new place in Little Cup reminds one of how Far'fetched got screwed over from joining. One of the dirtiest things GF ever did to the leek lover.
Just have to say that both Girafarig and its evolution have such cool designs, combining aesthetics (cute + yellow like Amparos) and odd themes (ominous like Parasect).
The first Gen 9 Pokémon and (I think) 3rd episode covering Gen 9?! It seems like yesterday we were JUST getting used to Generation 8. Goes to show how time has passed during this pandemic.
Farigiraf is great, that long neck WOULD provide strong psychic powers due to the spinal cords extending so far, plus the Tim Burton-looking hoodie is adorably freaky! Makes me hope for an Ariados Evo, Spidops can pull some weight despite the 404 BST but Ariados has waited YEARS for something beyond Toxic Thread. Where's our spitting spider?
Spidops and Tarountula are the first spider Pokémon with 8 legs as well! Hoping the same for Ariados, and Ledian as they’re both early Johto bugs that have been shafted.
If you want to live dangerously, in OU Doubles, I find that Nasty Plot Farigiraf under Trick Room is very effective, especially under Psychic Terrain. He's just vulnerable until you get Trick Room up. And if you think that Dark types are safe, you can even give him a Fairy Tera Type with Dazzling Gleam for Dark types, while Hyper Voice after a Nasty Plot boost causes significant damage to opposing Pokemon. The only downside is that Farigarif definitely suffers from Four Move-Slot Syndrome, especially if he's the one setting up Trick Room. And Follow Me support is very important.
have been watching your informative content for years now since college, and have always loved your sense of humour & vocabulary-choices tailored for each video 😆
i'm glad the giraffe has finally had its redemption now that it's banned to NFE. also, i believe beta sprites imply girafarig and wobbuffet were split into 2 pokemon from the same initial design, although i may be misremembering
i once did a psychic only run in Alpha sapphire where i used a Girafarig it was actually pretty great with its bulk and typing allowed any ghost type moves to not be able to hit it. it may not be the best pokemon but its better than you would think to would be, mind you im not a competitive player because competition ruins the fun in the game. i was really happy to see Girafarig get an evolution in gen 9.
cool, now time to ask for How BRAVE was Talonflame ACTUALLY (maybe include fletchinder too seeing as that broke out of NFE and got put in actual tiers)
I really don't get why he keeps saying that getting rid of the normal type would've made it better. Secondary stab, immunity to ghost and neutralizing normal's weakness to fighting are all pretty good traits.
Bulky psychic types love switching into fighting moves, and ghost moves weren't very common in past generations so you're sacrificing the matchup against most fighting pokemon just to beat Gengar. It's different now because ghost is more common than fighting.

Let's go. The GOAT. Garfirag won worlds
Funny how Girafarig did something amazing and noteworthy for competitive in both it’s first and most recent generation
Girafarig being in little cup is like a having a professional basketball player face off against a team of little kids brand new to the game.
Seriously man, I love the Patrons. They're almost always picking mons like this, which I genuinely relish.
It's a shame that dududunsparce doesn't exist (or can't because of the 12 character limit)
Yes making a video about it is a nice way to bring it up.
You wouldn’t pick that mega over like. Lucario or Khanga
I love how it wasnt quickbanned in little cup like dunsparce was. Speaks volumes lol
Farigiraf might be one my new favorite pokemon ever. The fact that they flipped its name and then made the tail it’s second neck is hilarious.
Farigiraf just became a world champion!
A new false swipe vid is just the thing I needed today.
The remake of this video in a few years is gonna be wild.
Girafarig is my favorite pokemon. I'm so happy to see it getting love in Gen 9.
Always happy to see more Gen 2 Pokemon covered
I would love to see a How Good was Aegislash Actually? It’s such a cool Pokémon and it has the power to back up the awesome design
I can’t believe it still hasn’t been done, I could’ve sworn it was
How good was "Gholdengo Beta Version"
@@xy394 The thing went to Ubers in Gen 6 and 7
I remember using Girafarig as my main Psychic type in HGSS. It's just so funny to watch Morty become helpless against this Giraffe. xD
Girafarig's new place in Little Cup reminds one of how Far'fetched got screwed over from joining. One of the dirtiest things GF ever did to the leek lover.
A couple of days before this video released, the little cup community voted to ban girafarig in a remarkably one sided suspect test vote
Girafarig looks hilarious towering over everything in Littlecup.
I love ur vids man, always watch em on release and j tend to rewatch some from time to time. Keep up the good work man!
May not be a top tier threat but it’s very solid for a story gameplay, extremely wide movepool and good stats make it a solid party member
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
This has always been my favorite pokemon what an interesting concept for a pokemon!
Just have to say that both Girafarig and its evolution have such cool designs, combining aesthetics (cute + yellow like Amparos) and odd themes (ominous like Parasect).
I am super happy to see that you included VGC doubles content! Amazing work man!
Fun Fact - in Nuzlockes Girafarig is considered a great mon due to its decent all round stats, solid typing and good level up movepool.
I always loved running around with my sweet giraffe in HGSS, it was never popular but dang was it useful and adorable. One of my favorites ❤
The first Gen 9 Pokémon and (I think) 3rd episode covering Gen 9?! It seems like yesterday we were JUST getting used to Generation 8. Goes to show how time has passed during this pandemic.
Finally my favorite Pokémon can get his chance to shine
Yes another girafarig fan
About time girafarig gained a chance to shine
It just feels right when an older gen mon gets an evo.
Cannot wait for the legend of Dudunsparce. Already done a Dunsparce video so it will take a really long time but yeah.
Prankster pokemon when they hear that Firafarif came out with the perfect counter ability: Oh god no...
The remake for how great was primeape and annihilape will be worth the wait as well how great were bisharp and kingambit
Wow talk about a comeback. Graifraiig was taking l's for decades and now it's op as a little cup mom
have been watching your informative content for years now since college, and have always loved your sense of humour & vocabulary-choices tailored for each video 😆
i'm glad the giraffe has finally had its redemption now that it's banned to NFE. also, i believe beta sprites imply girafarig and wobbuffet were split into 2 pokemon from the same initial design, although i may be misremembering
GOAT WORLD CHAMPION
i once did a psychic only run in Alpha sapphire where i used a Girafarig it was actually pretty great with its bulk and typing allowed any ghost type moves to not be able to hit it. it may not be the best pokemon but its better than you would think to would be, mind you im not a competitive player because competition ruins the fun in the game. i was really happy to see Girafarig get an evolution in gen 9.
Girafarig needed the evolution not only to be a better evolution line but to the Ruler of Little Cup (Even beating Gastly)
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
Glad it finally got some love in gen 9
I guess this technically means we have a gen 9 Pokemon vid despite having covered only 3 gen 6, 2 gen 7 and none from gen 8.
cool, now time to ask for How BRAVE was Talonflame ACTUALLY (maybe include fletchinder too seeing as that broke out of NFE and got put in actual tiers)
I love when I use Emo Giraffes to battle against a bunch of keys
I really don't get why he keeps saying that getting rid of the normal type would've made it better. Secondary stab, immunity to ghost and neutralizing normal's weakness to fighting are all pretty good traits.
Bulky psychic types love switching into fighting moves, and ghost moves weren't very common in past generations so you're sacrificing the matchup against most fighting pokemon just to beat Gengar. It's different now because ghost is more common than fighting.
Im currently doing a normal type only run in crystal and I'm quite upset that girafarig isn't in the game.
We need that dunsparce remake. I’m not the only one thinking it
It's a good thing it didn't get a mega, because otherwise it wouldn't have gotten a regular evolution.
I have been waiting for this ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t believe we’re seeing Gen 9 VGC already oh my lord
Girafarig is actually like a top 3 pokemon for in-game hgss runs due to its insane move pool type and decent stats for pve
Ever noticed how different girafarig looks in its gen 4 sprite
They were afraid making it psychic+dark would be too powerful … robbed me and my childhood of greatness 😂
Well we have Malamar now
Oh yeah sure. Gimme some of that 4x weakness to bug, I gotta get me some of that
Look at the tweet. It would have been normal and dark, not psychic and dark
@@diegoxavier9107 so x4 weak to fighting.
@@SomeGuy-cf2lp as weak as bug moves were gen 2? YES 😐 lol 😂 super effective psychic moves still… dark has better sp def .. think mark THINK 🤣 I’m not letting fury cutter stack
Farigiraf has the perfect kit to fall to untiered once DLC is available
I was literally watching the Orlando regionals as this went up. Of course, this takes priorities.
Girafarig has only ever been entirely irrelevant or literally banned and I love that for it
I think it's telling of how good Girafarig is in LC that it got freaking BANNED. Which is very funny to me.
Kellen saying "Goodness Gracious" is giving me energy I didn't think I would receive today
Love farigiraf. In vgc series 2 in showdown, I once switched farigiraf into 2 priority attacks and blocked both at once. I love how useful it's become
Oh hey look, it's the best Trick Room setter in the game.
