Clue to Clueless millenials - DUNE was written in 1965 and has been a FRANCHISE for decades just not an easily mainstream accessible one but now after LOTR & Game of Thrones hopefully people are not that infantile & ADHD unable to understand the higher concepts the scifi tale it's telling besides the basic tropes Star Wars etc has copied spread for the masses like John the Baptist.
@@klyanadkmorr Supplemental clue to millennials: not all fans of the Dune series are tiresome snobs. Many of us are just happy you all are finally being exposed to this amazing and influential work and hope you will read the books too.
The Baron activated his shield before leaning in to hear the Duke speak. The shield gave him some protection from the poison.
But the thing about shields, is that they have to allow oxygen molecules to pass through, otherwise the shield wearer would be smothered. So for that reason, slow movements and air can penetrate the shield, whereas swift moving projectiles are deflected.
Hence, how the Baron was in part protected from the Dr. Yueh’s poison tooth.
Also, as a side note, lasguns (lasers) if they strike a shield will cause a nuclear detonation. Hence why, the Harkonens and the Imperial Sardaukar troops couldn’t launch their attack, until the doctor sabotaged the shield shielding Arrekean (Arrakis’ capital city).
Shield technology is so powerful that almost all fighting is hand to hand, and guns, missiles, and lasguns are only used if a shield is disabled. (Remember-The slow blade penetrates the shield, the swift blade is deflected).
The Fremen however, use guns, along with knives and blades, because out in the deep desert, shields cannot be activated, lest they bring a worm.
Paul’s foresight into the future is flawed. In that there isn’t just one future, in any given present moment, there are many possible futures, and your choices, and others’ choices change the future. So Paul can see all possible futures, but it isn’t always clear which future will come to be.
Also, the visions can be symbolic. In Paul’s vision Chani stabbed him dead. But that could be symbolic of the old Paul needing to die, for the Kwisatz Haderach to rise.
Also, in a way Jamis taught him what he needed to survive, by dying in the duel. Paul learned the way of the desert, and Jamis’ death ushered him into in Fremen society. Do you recall what Dr. Kynes said, “I am accepted in Sietch and Village.”
@@richlisola1 The in story problem is once Paul takes the water of life he somehow goes beyond viewing possible futures but making what he expects happen out of the those possibilities happen he forces all to follow his vision prophecy ie the Kwisatz Haderach, then in Dune Messiah after he loses his eyesight he literally locks all of local time space into HIS vision of a preset future which his son LetoII has to stop and breed humanity into free beings in God Emperor of Dune.
"I understand everything, and nothing." A perfect description of experiencing Dune to its depths.

Jessica’s not trying to control her son. She’s trying to protect him. Her weakness has always been that she’s a mother before she’s a member of that lady-witch group. Lol.
And it doesn’t make it so clear in the film but she didn’t have a son as a plot, she was to breed with the duke for the female bloodline as instructed…but because she actually fell deeply in love with him, she bore him a son instead to please him-going against the other women’s wishes. It was an act of love between her and the duke, not trying to create a god.
Exactly because Jessica put the love of her man before the sisterhood, this plot kicks off.

But Jessica is still a Bene Gesserit, and the whole point of the Kwisatz Hederach is that he will be a tool controlled by the Bene Gesserit.

And yes, it was their plot like you say.
However, as soon as she decided to have a son just to please the Duke, she went outside the plan / path.
Paul is something which they did not plan and did not predict.
And we will all see where it leads.
The Bene Gesserit no doubt are still hoping and trying to remain in control of whatever is about to happen. But....are they? We will see.

Which is why he had that vision in the Ornithopter in the sand storm, where Jamis was teaching him about the rhythm and vibration of the universe which helped him out in the present moment to just go with the flow of the storm, so in THAT vision he had with him was from a future where he didn’t have to fight and kill Jamis and was eventually trained by him, even from the very beginning his visions from possible futures all show that he would ultimately meet and join the Fremen, it’s truly his destiny.
@@YaBoyRockLee plus if I understand correctly the vision he saw where he dies, it causes the rise of holy war he sees in his vision he does not want this holy war. So it make sense he doesn't let himself be killed here.
Paul see's the future, and possible futures. He can choose the best of outcomes.
i see it as him seeing a few quick time events over. not the full walkthrough, just few QTE´s that are coming.
"Goodbye, young human" is a reference to Paul having passed the test of the Gom Jabbar. In showing control of his impulses, the Reverend Mother sees him as a human instead of as an animal.

When Paul killed Jamis - he killed Paul Atreides in order to be reborn as the Kwisatz Haderach. That is the gift and lesson that Jamis gave him.
And to follow up - Paul's visions were potential outcomes - the vision where Jamis taught him the way of the Freman wasn't wrong - it just didn't happen as expected. Jamis enabled him to join the Fremen with that trial by combat, teaching him the Fremen way. Same ending - different road to get there. That is why Paul couldn't just "see" or "change" the future - at this stage his visions are just beginning, it's like learning how to walk or how to ride a bike. He is wobbly and is only seeing potential futures.

His visions are also not face value, Chani stabbed him and he knew “somehow a knife is important”. in the fight his former self died… but not literally. Jamis taught him the ways of the desert … kill or be killed, you have to fight to survive, the only thing worth anything is the water in your flesh, be practical-it’s easier to kill strangers than it is to teach them how to survive. The lessons he taught Paul in those few seconds were priceless.
Anyone else notice that the way Paul killed Jamis was similar to killing a bull? He dodge him and struck him as he passed by.
That was a very good catch. I've seen this about three times or so, but you're right that is how you kill a bull.

I didn't notice that, nice catch :) 1 thing i noticed tho was in Paul's later visions is that the lens flare looks like the golden path :)
It was forshadowed in his training with Gurney back on Caladan.
Jessica trained Paul in The Weirding Way, rapid movements that seem impossible. That's why he was suddenly behind Jamis and killed him from behind.
"I am not impressed by this heat." You would be if you understood this was in Celsius. This is in Celsius - 90°C is 197°F. And Arrakis can go as high as 140°C, or 284°F. You would fry.
Oh, you thought Dr. Yueh wanted to save his wife's life. A lot of reactors seem to have also made that mistake. Dr. Yueh said earlier that the Baron took his wife "apart like a doll". She's been tortured, but kept alive as leverage over the doctor. Him asking to have the wife "delivered from her agony" was a deliberate choice of words. There are no accidents with the dialogue. Dr. Yueh already knew he was as good as dead, all he wanted was for his wife to no longer suffer.
lol I remember watching the movie, when they said 140 degrees I thought "Oh, nice of them to say it in Fahrenheit for us" because it sounded totally believable, 140 F would still kill you fast

@Guy Smith I can't recall from the books, but it is probably Fahrenheit. At around 120-125 F° the proteins in our bodies begin to denature, 140F° would kill more than quick enough for Frank Herbert's liking.
When Paul said "I recognize your footsteps old man" He was speaking to both Gurney and the Worm. The sand worms are known as Shai-Hulud meaning "The old man of the Desert"
Gurney is dope, he hates House Harkonnen more than anyone else, with reason. Don't doubt him.

Anybody who casually references proxy wars when initially hearing about the Harkonin and Atreides war over Dune, and anyone who sees 'Fremen' and sees also 'Free Man' (as in freed slave), and anyone who sees sand and spice and thinks 'oil', but who also can find the humor and drama, religious overtones and imperialist overtones, is someone you really really want to watch and read Dune with. Thanks for the best and sharpest viewing I've seen of the movie. I learned some things from you that I hadn't even considered before.

The thing about Dr. Yoeh is that he understood completely what he was doing & what was going to happen. He was put in an impossible situation. He knew he would never get his wife back & the Baron would betray him. BUT! He knew that he had to do something. If it wasn't him, it was someone else. And it's not talked about in the movie but he cares deeply for Jessica & they're good friends. He knew that nothing would stop the Baron & took upon himself to do the best he could with what he was given. He wanted to kill the Baron if possible & he wanted to help save Jessica & Paul if he could. It wasn't simply a selfish thing, even though it felt that way.
Great reaction. One note from the book. Dr Yoeh's character has a lot more depth. He knows that he's going to be killed. He knows that she's going to be killed. "They take her apart like a doll." At the point of his betrayal all he wanted was exactly what he got, the end of her suffering and torture. That's why he gave the Duke the pill; one last act of revenge from the grave.

That said, knowing Piter De Vries (the Harkonen's mentat), it is a very plausible theory.
The only issue is that the Baron implied she was dead ("so, join her"), and he most often speak the truth, after a fashion.

The Bene Gesserit are working toward breeding a "Man" with their powers, who also can go beyond and "see" into the future. Jessica had a son instead of a daughter, as she was ordered. Paul was born one generation too soon. His "god-like" visions are glimpses into ALL the possible paths of the future. The real Dune story is that Paul has to choose which path is the "best". The problem being that his "god-like" powers do not extend to helping him make those choices.. He has to make these choices as a "Human". And as we all know, "Humans", unlike "gods", can make mistakes. The Dune story is told in 6 massive books. This movie was the story up to the halfway point of the 1st. book. The rest of the books cover thousands of years of Human history. Let's just say that we as the Human Race will need those years. Hopefully the whole story will get filmed. Can't "The one" not be female? I haven't read the books but I had the understanding the the one had to br Male, and no one was correcting them on the sister being a rival thing

@@tyngouamo7067 Males don't survive the ritualistic ordeal they must go through to come into their full powers. That's a major reason why the Bene Gesserit are all females. But through a centuries-long secret breeding program, the Bene try to create a male who can survive the ordeal and guide the future of the human race. But they didn't intend that male to be Paul. I haven't given away anything that wasn't in the movie, but blink and you'd miss it.

Few little things explained in the books but not in the movie so much...
1: Jessica's power of the Voice has to be specifically pitched to a hearer, so she really has to hear them first before she can make a move on them, and then on only one at a time.
2: You seemed to be fine with it but just to clarify, fast moving objects cannot penetrate a shield so people have given up on guns for melee weapons. Lasers when they hit shields cause an explosion not unlike a small nuke so people don't use them unless they detect a target is unshielded. (Ducan loses his Orni's shields just before the Harkonnens open up with that laser on him.) The shield the Baron fired up slowed the air down enough for him to mostly escape it when the Duke breathed poison.
3: Dune's oddly low-tech universe when it comes to computers is because humanity developed computers too far in the past, which allowed a tyranny of humans to control other humans with computers. Details are sketchy. Some fans maintain it was a Battlestar Galactica type machine revolution, but I think it was more manipulation and total control of populations using a surveillance state, brainwashing, deep-fake and other techniques which eventually caused a galactic uprising. Either way all but the most rudimentary calculating machines are banned. Instead 'human computers' who operate on intelligence boosting drugs called Mentats aid house leaders by making lightning fast calculations and logical deductions. Thurfir Hawat is one of these.
4: I think you figured it out but Duke Leto basically assumed that the Baron could only afford a modest usual invasion force, and that it would take him time to amass the wealth and bribes to the Spacing Guild to make it happen. Interstellar travel is VERY expensive, and he figured he'd have time to iron out the equipment issues and get his Fremen alliance to take on the Baron when he came. Unfortunately he underestimated how MUCH the Baron hated him and how much he was willing to spend, and didn't factor in the Emperor risking lending his own troops.

Actually, it wasn't humans that enslaved other humans with computers. It was basically Artificial Intelligence; in the book series they often reference the "thinking machines". It's literally in their bible, the rule against making machines in the likeness of a human mind. That's why they use some technology, but nothing that would be close to a super advanced computer. That's why Mentats are trained to be human computers.
The prequel books discuss the battle between robots and humans; how humanity had to revolt, destroy, and ban the thinking machines in order to be free. This is also where Harkonnen and Atreides houses became enemies.
The sequels in the series introduce the Ixians and how they were constantly toeing the line between creating machines and thinking machines
@@lebana 90% of Dune fans don't consider the Prequels and the Sequel books to be canon as they completely contradict the original six books by Frank Herbert.
@@j-robthetrapgod500 true, but it doesn't negate the fact that it is "thinking machines" that are banned, not humans with machines and certainly not humans with surveillance-type machines as OP stated.
@@j-robthetrapgod500 yes agree. Also, the prequels make the Jihad like a Terminator-like war. It was more of a philosophical Jihad. Humans had gotten stagnant by relying too heavily on technology. They purged thinking machines to stop the mental enslavement of humanity, not necessarily literal enslavement.
About spitting into the container:
They are making coffee (spice coffee to be precise).
I think that in movie they decided to show them spitting into the container to show that making coffee is an important ritual for the Fremen. Sacred hallucinogen stuff 😀

Dune takes place long after a terrible Machine Uprising called 'The Butlerian Jihad' that nearly destroyed the species. As a result, humanity has banned all forms of AI and any computer advanced enough to produce AI. As such specialized human beings have assumed the roles of these computers; Mentats such as Thufir of the Atredies and Piter of the Horkonnens being like living databases/calculators, whereas the Navigators of the Spacing Guild use massive spice doses to take the role of FTL Navigation computers.
Ok no joke, I have seen a lot of reactions of Dune, but what ya'll were saying has to be some of the most insightful commentary I have yet heard from people not already familiar with the franchise. (assuming you didn't watch or read it ahead of time and were just acting it out) "Proxy war?" ridiculously nice job! And great reaction.

Like the Navigators of the Spacing Guild see the paths for interstellar travel.
You need to keep in mind "The One" has two meanings here.
First is the superbeing of the Bene Gesserit. It's not a prophecy or a religious belief, it's simply something they had decided mankind needs and took upon themselves to create through selective breeding. It might be Paul or he might be an incomplete version or the whole plan was unrealistic from the start. I'm not going to tell and I'm not going to tell if we get an answer ;)
The other is the messiah of the Fremen beliefs which was basically a sham. It's said pretty explicitly that Bene Gesserit planted certain superstitions on various planets so that their lot could take advantage of it if needed. The prophecies were fabricated on purpose to be easily fulfilled by anyone with Bene Gesserit training. Paul was perfectly aware of it and while not thrilled he played along. And it paid off - neither Kynes nor Stilgar would have acted as they did if they hadn't thought that maybe Paul might be it.
An important fact about Bene Gesserit: they were not magic, it was all extreme level of control over their bodies, suggestion, hypnosis, and insane level of perceptiveness. So yeah, it was perfectly possible for Paul to figure out the exact right way to wear a stillsuit just because he saw some footage.

@Eric Bang I think both Paul and Leto II were Kwisatz Haderachs, they both had the same abilities.
10:40 - Leto is progressive compared to the other Great Houses... but at the same time, he clearly sees the military value of the Fremen too and wishes to use them for his own purposes (and salvation from this move against him by the Emperor).
the book came out in the 60s and inspired lots of scifi like star wars.
My interpretation of the dreams is that they're more metaphorical than seeing various outcomes and choosing a particular paths. (Although that's certainly a valid way to look at them as well.) In the case of Jamis, he absolutely taught Paul critical lessons of his new reality: He's no longer a boy, his old life is dead, he must be ruthless and willing to kill if he is to survive, and that this will still carry consequences of its own. Not a friend or mentor as we would consider, but very much in line with a crucial passage in the book just beyond where this film stopped. I thought it was a really, really cool way to illustrate the fluid and confusing nature of Paul's prescience. He can see things and definitely influence outcomes, but not always. It's very, very much a burden, and he's only just started to scratch the surface.
It's more about possible futures. My guess is the future where Paul was mentored by Jamis is the future where Chani killed him. Where the only future where Paul didn't die was the future were Jamis did his signature knife swap from one hand to the other. Paul would move to the side and slip the blade into a kidney.
Establishing he as a fierce warrior, but unaware of their customs.
pretty much, Paul died when he killed that man. The girl gave him the knife he used to kill the man, something he never done before and that was like a stab into his past so that he could move into the future of a strong leader.
Always fun to see non-book readers enjoy the new movie. It was so good.

Girl pronounced 'Lisan al'Gaib' perfectly on the first attempt. That's a keeper.
Regarding the temperature not being that hot, I'm pretty sure in space future has done away with the imperial system. 120 degrees CELSIUS, as in 20 degrees hotter than when water turns into steam.
ALSO, one thing that's really lost from the book are the Doctor's motivations. He knew that he was going to be killed by the Baron, and he knew his wife was already dead. However, there are fates much worse than death. His goal in the book was twofold: the first was to confirm that his wife really was dead, as she was a Bene Gesserit and taught him how to spot lies. The second was to get revenge on the Baron by killing him, as he would never be able to get into his presence without delivering the Duke.
The Gom Jabbar is also a test Benne Gesserit go through. That's why his mother was so terrified waiting outside the room. She knew what was about to happen to her son and that he might not live through it. 😬

You guys are the first people I know to pick up on spice and Arrakis as a metaphor for oil and the Middle East. The Fremen even speak something like Arabic if I remember correctly.

@@YaBoyRockLee I mean, obviously a lot of more cultured or socially/historically literate people are gonna get it it, but in my personal sphere and here on UA-cam it seems to go over everyone’s head. I think the viewership for movies like this is increasingly hostile towards reading any sort of meaning or message into their entertainment. There’s a lot of attitudes along the lines of ”it’s not that deep, it’s just a movie, bro” out there, and if the message is blatant enough that they can pick up on it they will be turned off and complain about “wokeism” or something.

@@davidn5269 To be honest, I think most other reviewers / reactors also got it (because the opening narration / audio book info-dump is pretty on-the-nose, let's be honest) but didn't dare say it out loud for fear of alienating their audiences, who don't appreciate inconvenient truths in their entertainment, as you said. The ad money must flow.
And unlike, say, Lord of the Rings, where Tolkien actively denied that the books were an allegory for World Wars I and II, Frank Herbert *explicitly intended* the oil / colonialism connection.
The mouse kangaroo that paul sees is actually the creature he later names himself after; Muad'Dib
If you ever watch the original Dune film from the 80s just know this film is ends at the halfway point of the original film. George Lucas has said he took some of his inspiration for Star Wars from the Dune book.
You can see Frank Herbert's Dune novel influences in Star Wars like Tatooine, the Sarlacc pit, etc.
Some? More like a shitload.
Galactic empire. Evil emperor. The Chosen One. Future visions of destruction. Desert planet. Two moons/Two suns. Native sand people. Main character named after an Apostle. Secret order with supernatural powers who control society from the shadows. Spice. Spice smugglers. Hatred towards robots. Imperial death troopers.
Also, I'm convinced George Lucas named Indiana Jones based on Duncan Idaho.
Paul can see all outcomes of different futures. In another outcome, his mother didn’t make the journey with him and he befriended Jamis because the tribe was willing to have only him accompany them. But to add more depth to his visions of Jamis, Jamis in some ways was a teacher to Paul. He taught him the ways of the desert by forcing him to kill him

Quick note: the soldiers in white armor (the ones from the planet with the throat-singing and the blood sacrifices) are not Harkonnen (Baron's faction), but Sardaukar: the Imperium's elite army. They were employed by the Baron to reinforce his army.
The Sardaukar are also supposed to be the fiercest commandos in the universe. But as you can see the Atreides and Fremen can mop these fools up quickly. Had they had time to create a real alliance the Emperor would not have been able to check them in battle.
In one of the later books they do talk about finding a possible alien species. In one solar system they find a third planet from the sun which seem to have life at one time. But now is all used up and burnt out. But on it's single large moon, they did find the remains of a small space craft.
It turns out to be ruins built by Leto II in the "ancient past" with No Room technology on the planet Crompton.
I love that you called it on the bull head being the one that killed the old Duke. In the book, Duke Leto makes a point of hanging it in the dining hall and having a portrait of his father on the opposite wall, both on Caladan and Arrakis. The horns were sprayed with a “fixative” after it was killed, so the old duke’s blood is still on there. Jessica is not a fan of the custom.

I'm a megafan of the books, and I was really worried that viewers who haven't read the first one would be completely lost and not get the movie, because the books are incredibly deep and subtle, but the writer(s) did such a good job boiling down the backstory and plot, and Denis Villeneuve did such a great job telling it visually, that it doesn't seem to be a problem. This is Dune.
If you want to immerse yourselves more in the world, there's a ton of amazing stuff in just the first part of the first book covered by the movie that's never even alluded to here. It's awesome.
Yeah, and Jessica trying to talk him out of it resulted in one of the (in my opinion) funniest lines of the book:
"The choice is between your digestion and my ancestral dignity, my dear. It will hang in the dining hall.
With the Fremen if you kill someone in a dual you have to take on their role and responsibilities, their wife/husband is yours and you are responsible for their children. When Paul killed Jamis he became him. Now Paul is a Fremen warrior with a wife and a couple kids.
I was kinda disappointed that Paul did not cry after killing Jamis.. (in the book) its a very important moment for the Fremen. Maybe.... just maybe they will show Paul cry for Jamis in part 2 if they introduce Jamis' wife and children to Paul. Anyway.. (in the book) Paul cries holding Jamis hand as he dies.. The Fremen see Paul crying and they take it as another omen to him being the messiah because he sheds water for someone he doesnt know. Water is priceless and outside of Shai-Hulud, it is the only other thing worshiped by the Fremen. It is sacred..

@@Atrydka its been a few years since i read the book.. i could have sworn he cries right after stabbing Jamis and Paul holds Jamis' hand while he dies and Paul cries the whole time. But what ever.. i hope they show the scene of hime crying whenever it happens.. its an important moment for the Fremen.
Edit: (went back and read that part of the chapter) ah ok! You're right! They are at the funeral of Jamis when Paul speaks about what Jamis taught him. As he's doing this he starts to cry. And then the Fremen are i awe as he sheds water for the dead..
@@TrenchToast in the book he actually feels euphoric after the fight, he doesn't mourn Jamis, cause he didn't know him (I like that change in the movie, he really is a friend of Jamis because of the visions), and Jessica even has to ask him “Well, how does it feel to be a killer?” to make him understand the weight of taking someones life. Yes, he cries during the ceremony, but I feel like it has more to do with remembering what he lost (the innocence, old life and friends - he thinks about Gurney when he takes Jamis' baliset and cries) than Jamis himself.
@@Atrydka i guess untill you take life yourself you wouldnt know what it would feel like or how you would react.. yes... he could have cried because of remembering people.. but i believe he is crying because he's never kill someone before.. he's 15 years old... we can debate about this till we are blue in the face.. my ultimate point is that i hope in the next movie they show Paul CRY in front of the Fremen. As stated before... its a major event to the Fremen people of accepting Paul into the tribe..
7:00 - As a hardcore book reader, I was worried you weren't following the story...up until this point when you hear the narration explaining "interstellar travel is impossible without spice, making it the most precious commodity in the universe"....and then you shouted "Oh, it's oil! They're invading the indigenous people's lands to take space oil! It's a metaphor for imperialism!"....I was just nodding and grinning throughout all that: " _Now_ they're catching on...."
I hope this director eventually adapts all of the Dune books. There's so much crazy things that happen in the later books and I want to know how he would give them form in a visual sense.

@@chadmarx7718 that's unfortunate because I dont think you can understand the full story of paul without seeing the longterm outcomes of his choices. The God Emperor is much more interesting of a character than paul, in my opinion.
My guess is that they will roll Dune Messiah into this as a three part series, and if it is successful we will get Children of Dune and God Emperor as the next movie series. Then Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse will be covered in the proposed tv series called The Sisterhood on Amazon Prime. I also hope we get the Games that they hope to introduce. I loved Dune 2000 and used to play it on my PC and on Sega back in the day. There is also supposed to be comics and illustrated works, hopefully.

The Dune Saga is pretty epic, it could be a great movie saga. This movie corresponds to the 1st half of Book 1.
Written in the 50's, it was a big inspiration for the next scifi works I'd say. I saw the voice control and sand worms in Star Wars for example.

Paul's comment about "I recognize your foot steps old man" while saving the crew of the havester is referring to the approaching sand worm which if you notice is much larger that the other worm seen later on in the film. This is a very old fully mature worm that he recognises from the future. It's also said earlier on during his training but on this occasion he is talking about the worm.

"I recognize your footsteps Old Man" was Pauls mind capturing multiple things at once: Gurneys footsteps in the sand which couldnt be heard nor seen over the chaos around him and the Nickname they give to the sandworms of "Old Man" which was on its way,
1:02:49 - You got it, he already gained that knowledge. Paul is seeing naked time, multiple branching possible futures. Some stand out more than others, perhaps those that are more probable. He sees a possible future where he joins the Fremen and he and Jamis become friends. Jamis taught him life lessons from the future that he uses to survive the storm. But ultimately, he goes down a path where he kills Jamis.

It's so much like how the Stark's were forced to take over and then immediately get betrayed and slaughtered in the beginning of Game of Thrones.
There's definitely that, as well as the houses, Ned Stark's death and the three-eyed raven. GoT takes a lot of inspiration from Dune. The rest of Paul's journey is also basically that from Daenerys.
I have seen a lot of reactions but this was a fun ride, you catching little details and understanding almost everything was impressive

The Baron activated his shield before leaning in to hear the Duke speak. The shield gave him some protection from the poison.
But the thing about shields, is it has to allow oxygen molecules to pass through, otherwise the shield wearer would be smothered. So for that reason, slow movements and air can penetrate the shield, whereas swift moving projectiles are deflected.
Hence, how the Baron was in part protected from the Dr. Yueh’s poison tooth.
Also, as a side note, lasguns (lasers) if they strike a shield will cause a nuclear detonation. Hence why, the Harkonens and the Imperial Sardaukar troops couldn’t launch their attack, until the doctor sabotaged the shield shielding the Arrekean (Arrakis’ capital city).
Shield technology is so powerful that almost all fighting is hand to hand, and guns, missiles, and lasguns are only used if a shield is disabled.
The Fremen however, use guns, along with knives and blades, because out in the deep desert shields cannot be activated, lest they bring a worm.

In a vision at the start of the movie, James tells Paul "I will teach you the ways of the desert". His death does that, showing him that the desert is a brutal, unforgiving place if you’re not ready for it. Like the Baron said earlier, "The desert takes the weak."

In a stroke of irony, Jamis did teach Paul the ways of the desert by challenging him. And you're right, during that fight, Paul Atreides dies figuratively and is reborn as the Kwisatz Haderach. His powers are growing.

the spice grants long life, to the tune of hundreds to thousands of years, it grants the ability to see into the future and make insanely complex calculations among other abilities becoming possible.

in the movie they dont explain what drum sand is, but it is basically a sand that produce loud drum-like sounds when stepped on
“i recognize your footsteps old man” you guys were reading a little too deep. it was simply a call back to the training scene. gurney told paul not to stand with his back to the door, he responded that he’d recognized his footsteps and had known who was coming. while they fought, paul straightens up at one point and calls him an old man. in the spice harvester scene, it’s gurney that runs back to get him so paul mutters that phrase to himself in recognition of who’s coming for him.

i know this is a little late, but where the girls would be more controlled as a benejseret, its not why paul was freaking out. male benejeserets have the ability to see though all past bloodlines as compared to the females only being able to see through female bloodlines. also, paul has access to new powers never seen to the benejeseret such as seeing into the future(with some interpretation) and a bunch of other crazy powerful spoiler stuff. imagine forseeing the death of everyone you ever knew and the person responsible is the only person you have left.

I know I'm SUPER late to the party, BUT. Dr. Yueh's, wife, Wanna, was taken by the Harkonnens and tortured non-stop. That's how they overcame his Suk training, they promised Yueh they would stop if he gave them the Duke. Yueh knew very well The Baron would kill Wanna as soon as he had no need of her anymore, but that was enough for Yueh, because it meant that Wanna would no longer be in pain. He knew exactly what he was doing, and took (what he thought would be) his ultimate revenge.
