Taking in 3 stunning lines, the seat Valley Line, the Durham Coast Line and the Tyne Valley line is this Northerns longest direct route.
With stunning scenery along the way this is a fabulous trip to make.

You deserve a medal, almost 5 hours on a class 156 is not a pleasant way to travel. The journey is very scenic and Northern should really market this journey and put on rolling stock more suitable to the length of the journey.
Hi mate, thanks for watching - appreciated. For the length of time they should put a better rolling stock on but luckily it was a nice day which made the journey all that better.
reminds me of the cheeky sprinter run between norwich and liverpool, its a rough one. though theyre switching to turbostars soon
Used to be worse, used to be ran with Pacers.
Damn sight better than a Pacer!
The first time I travelled on a 156 was Sheffield to Norwich in 1988. It took about 3½ hours. The full journey was Liverpool to Norwich, which is 5h20 at least. They also did the Glasgow to Malaig a few years ago (maybe still do.} Again, over 5 hours. I got the impression in British Rail days that they were intended for long distance regional journeys. Also, I doubt that very many people would do the full trip from Whitby to Carlisle.
Besides, when I travelled on that route on a bank holiday Monday in 2019, it was a very crowded pacer from Whitby to Newcastle. I'd sooner travel on a 156 any day.
Amazing journey. I had no idea this was possible on a single service. Have done both the Whitby to Middlesbrough section and the Newcastle to Carlisle section. To see the entire route was stunning. I particularly enjoyed the footage along the Tyne.
Always look forward to your videos, the wait is worth it!
Only possible on a Sunday when the services join up!
Cracking video lad, thanks. Love Whitby, Newcastle and Hexham, so a great trip to take. Also love the curry train concept, what a scheme! Don’t sweat on the uploads, whenever you get a chance is cool with us. Cheers mate.
Thanks for watching - appreciated. Cheers, the curry train is a good idea, never taken it but i know a few who have, the only advice i'd give is as they use a public train dont go on Newcastle match days, the trains are rammed!? My annual leave renews in January so i'll be planning on a few trips in the new year, but until then i have a couple of things planned.
I remember shortly after the news broke about John Darwin, some genius changed the road sign on the way into Seaton Carew to Seaton Canoe.
Thanks for watching mate - appreciated. That is absolute genius. 😂😂
Yes they did. They also added ‘Twinned with Panama City’!
Another great video! I've done Great Ayton to Whitby and then back to Middlesbrough but never the full way to Carlisle, so thanks for taking us with you!
Thanks for watching - appreciated. It was a long day but well worth the time.
That train used to go all the way to Whitehaven
Ruswarp = Russup; Grosmont = Growmont
Northern do a direct Carlisle to Nottingham on a Sunday. I think that is their longest.
Always a lovely ride along the Esk Valley.
Yes the S in Gosmount is silent so you pronounce it "gromount"
Thanks for watching - appreciated. I assume that's how you pronounce the names. They do, the direct service between Carlisle and Notts is 4hrs 40 mins - this one is 5 minutes longer.
Hi,
You could do Ruswarp [station] to [the statue of Ruswarp, the dog whose pawprint signed the petition to save the Settle-Carlisle railway: see wikipedia], at Garsdale station, with a pitstop for supplies and a walk at Carlisle.
Thanks for an interesting watch thanks which brought back some memories..
Thanks for mate appreciated - happy that you enjoyed it and glad it brought back memories for you.
Some great scenery on that trip. I have done the bit between Newcastle and Carlisle twice on diverted Kings Cross to Aberdeen services. I like the reference to the Canoe Man. Enjoyable video thanks
Cracking video. I think if I made that journey, I think I may brake my journey about half way
Thanks for watching mate - appreciated. It was a long haul, but worth while.
A great video, Thank you for uploading this 😊😊😊
I did a day trip Carlisle to Hartlepool once, using a £10 Northern newspaper offer (they are currently running another of those). That was a long day.
Great video. The longest journey I've travelled on a 156 was from Lancaster to Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast route at nearly 4 hours.
The Northern 156s are adequate but I really think they should have had carpets fitted when they were refurbished.
Enjoyed this and it's made me want to take the esk valley and Durham coast route. I live on the Tyne Valley route so take it often and it's got some great views.
I once did the Leeds to Carlisle via Settle route and that felt like an age so 5 hours is good going on a 156
Thanks for watching - appreciated. The Leeds to Carlisle route is also a beautiful journey to make, we are quite lucky to have access to some amazing trips.
I really enjoyed your video. My Mother came from Co. Durham and often talked of these places. One would think that Northern would use a "158 DMU" on this run.
Excellent video! Most people do shorter parts of the route so I guess there’s little incentive to upgrade the rolling stock much. That said, if the seats were better and they offered catering then they might get more long distance passengers!
Thanks for watching - appreciated. Agree with that.
I admire your patience - I'd be screaming to get off!!! You managed to make the Durham Coast Line seem reasonably attractive! Personally when I've ridden that line, I've found my will to live fading rapidly after Hartlepool! Wasn't helped by the fact that the train didn't do more than 15mph all the way from East Boldon into Newcastle!
Great video. The seats look like ironing boards. I love train travel, have a railcard etc. But, it's too far for me as my backside would be numb! ( operation for cancer). I love pendolino fc seats etc. But, 5 hours on rock hard seats with no catering! No.The 156 are for short passenger journeys surely
I just like or love them 153's, 156's and 158's. And in Holland it is seen as old trains. But the new stuff is just not nice anymore. So keep them on line over there. 😊
Seaton Carew is part of Hartlepool but credit to sitting on a 156 for 5 hours, I struggle with the hour up to Newcastle!
Great video btw
Considering the vast majority of people will be using this train for less than half of its route, the 156 is somewhat tolerable.
There's a similar issue with the service from Liverpool to Norwich, which runs 158s.
Also I was shocked how much faster driving is.
beatiful route done it often for whitby goth weekend to newcastle however my little jk is now it takes as long on that route as it does to get to london from newcastle
This is where Northern should be using something equivalent to class 185 for this type of journey.
What about the Sunday only Carlisle to Nottingham? As the crow flies Carlisle to Nottingham is certainly substantially further but then the Esk Valley line twists a bit.
Thanks for watching - appreciated. It may be longer distance wise, I'm not sure but time wise Whitby to Carlisle is 5 minutes longer. I think the Sunday service arrives in Nottingham at around 8pm so logistically it was a bit harder to plan, especially as i didn't want an overnight stay.
My house is in this video 👍
How did you book this journey? I'd like to try Carlisle to Whitby and back but I can't find this service on the National Rail web site.
Sunderland is actually a City.
Thanks for watching - appreciated. I know it is but I was being polite.
In what way?
Newcastle to Carlisle is bad enough. So slow an sleepy lol. Well done though 😂
On the Northern Timetable I looked at, it only shows this service as going as far as Newcastle. Does it continue using a different timetable?
Thanks for watching mate - appreciated. No, it’s the same timetable. It’s the 12.49 service, it runs Sundays only. There’s also a later train around 16.00hrs.
@1:16 820 km per hour ??? that would mean the 212km ride to Carlisle would only take 15 minutes, without any stops.
Only joking, another great video.
I've been to Whitby a few times from Newcastle and I am really amazed how slow it is, although it is quite a scenic route
I know people who could cycle and beat that time
I have at some time ridden all of this route but not in one go like this. I should point out that the Industry that Gave Middlesbrough that nickname has all but gone.
Thanks for watching - appreciated.

Thanks for watching - appreciated. I'll call it the Tees Newport Bridge.
is this journey only direct on Sundays only.
Thanks for watching - appreciated. Yes i think so, i had a look at the timetable and all through the week are changes.
And I thought Sheffield to Lincoln was the longest Northern journey, at least the pacers are gone…
Thanks for watching - appreciated
A lot of those trains are through trains from Leeds (i.e. Leeds - Sheffield - Lincoln). I did that journey a few months ago.
Oh, and if you're missing the Pacers, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway has preserved a couple.
5 hours pah! thats for babys try the direct route rom Aberdeen to Panzance Britians longest direct Train about 13 hours
Thanks for watching mate, appreciated. I hear you mate, I hear you. That trip is on my radar, but surely 13hrs on a dreaded voyager is more comfortable than 5hrs on a 156!? I suppose time will tell!? 😂😂 but thanks for the comment.
Is this on same train
Thanks for watching mate - appreciated. Yeah, it sure was - direct from Whitby to Carlisle. It only runs on a Sunday.
@@TheGeordieTravels must go on trip with u, but do something different
you could of spent 4 1/2 on a ryanair instead and been in lanzarote
All that way on a Sprinter? Things like that should be banned under the Geneva Convention. I guess it could have been worse: I'd hate to have had to endure it on a Pacer.
You wont be very popular in Sunderland for referring to it as a town..
Thanks for watching mate - appreciated. Given the name of my channel I’m not very popular there anyway. Just a bit of local rivalry 😂😂
14:29 that awful flag on top of it.
