I'm Thai. I know something about this. It took a lot not to be colonized. Making Russia a friend, modernizing the country are some of most important things to make Thais survive a very difficult time. Thailand was bigger than it is now. King Rama V had to lose many pieces of land to France and England in order to save what's left. That hurt him tremendously. They say that that's what killed him, grief. I also remember reading a story about French naval ships broke through Thai naval defense in gulf of Thailand and moved up to Chao Phraya River pointing their cannons at Temple of the Emerald Buddha, threating to fire and shut down Gulf of Thailand if Thailand fail to pay them 3 million of French Franc in cash within 48 hours.
The story of Thailand independence really does show how smart Rama V was, he played western countries against each other by learning how they think. Yes, there were some losses along the way, but he showed that he could make the difficult decisions for the greater good, there is no doubt that weighed heavy on him.
The story of the french navel ships is also interesting, I've been working on a video that includes part of how they broke through the rivers defences. you can still visit the island where the navy base was.
It's true story
@@IdeaStudioBKK looking forward to it

Amazing Thailand 🇹🇭
Amazing Thailand indeed
That's why Thailand has the strong cultures
I lived in the Victory Monument in a studio apt my first year or two in Bangkok. One of the happiest times of my life!
✨You can still be a proud nation without waging war and Thailand is proof of that!✨
😋5:11 - I’m getting hungry just watching this.😝
🥺The street food alone is already amazing & spectacular!!😍
🥰THANKS FOR TAKING ME WITH YOUR NICE JOURNEY.😘💕👍
You always have just the right amount of professionalism to your videos. They are never over or under produced. But boy, your vids always make me hungry!
Portugal Also watch all your videos.. I love Thailand
Awesome! Thank you!
@'Retired Working For You'
Chris you have done a lot of homework for telling the history of colonization in south east asia. Kudos!!! The invasion from western countries started since even before Bangkok became the capital city of Thailand around 1650s, Ayudhaya Era. And the colonization really hit hard to Thailand during King Rama 3, 4, 5, 6 , which was around 1780 onwards. These are so many stories, which have been portrayed in many Thai movies and drama series.
I just want to throw in a piece of Thai History. Since the king Rama 3 had stabilized Siam (the name before Thailand) from neighboring countries like Burma, the king Rama 3 had worked hard to establish the relationship and trading with China and western countries, which resulted in a lot of income in gold saved in the palace. There were story telling that someone asked the King Rama 3, why saving so much gold in palace. The King Rama 3 replied "Saving for tough times the future. And we should be worried about western power.".
The King Rama 4 is the younger brother of the king Rama 3, who can speak western language fluently and had prepared his sons by hiring westerners to teach them as much as possible about western countries.
The King Rama 5 (son of King Rama 4) was the first king to travel to Europe and Russia. With the smart diplomatic strategies such as losing some of Siam's territories to save the Thailand today, the king Rama 5 could save thailand, but he was sick and passed away at the age of 57. It was very painful process for Siam or Thailand.
The main story is this. After Siam-France Conflict in 1893, Siam must pay money as fine to France in total of 2.3 milllion Franc within 24 hours. A lot of gold from the palace including the gold saved during King Rama 3 era was used as the payment to France (23 ton gold coins). The gold was used to save Siam or Thailand as the King Rama 3 wished. It is just a tiny bit of history true story always amaze me.
amazing comment. my hope with this channel is that each video STARTS a conversation that others add to. so your useful information added onto this topic is EXACTLY what i'm hoping we get more of here. cheers!
ขอบคุณค่ะสำหรับรายละเอียดที่อ่านแล้วเข้าใจง่าย
One of my favourite spots of Bangkok is at Victory Monument: the Saxophone Pub. Their liveband is excellent 👍
One of the most classic pub in Bkk.
@@13ghee I agree 🙏
I just learned about King Taksin the other day from my Thai landlord. The history here is so interesting. Looking forward to learning more
Awesome!
Yet again, another banger! as expected tho. Victory Monument has a rather rinterestest design history, It has a distinct western design which is a stark contrast to more Thai elements in other monuments in the city. Also lots of interestesting tidbits about the designer and artest who worked on them, I've actually got a video planned about one of them soon.
Appreciate a part of Thailand's history. Good job 👍
Day 7! Short sweet and simple video for today. Great as always Chris
Wow I Love Video Thanks so much Chris Thailand Love you Welcome to Thailand 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍😍
New video and new thumbs up.
Victory monument.. I saw from room 75 floor at Baiyoke Sky Hotel, it was the first thing I went to look around on my first Thailand trip in 2008..
Victory Monument was a big one with all its lanes around it
But I didn't show as much history as you are now telling, it was interesting :)
Good job on the history of Thailand.
I’d just add that during WW II. The Embassy of Thailand in the U.S., never delivered papers declaring war against then U.S. and other countries.
They claimed they had no choice but to let Japan enter there country. So for those reason, receive little punishment.
Thai scholars in the US also participated into secret soldier operation called Seri-Thai to secretly spy on and some attacks on the Japanese. With the PM's knowledge behind the scene, that helped saying Thai was also on the US side. Its two face politics in the sensitive situation for weak country that had been invaded by surprise by Japan.
Lol. From the Thai perspective.
Thai not really want to join Japan we just let them go pass. We declare war because USA bomb us because we let japan go pass.
a thumbs throughout the series and not just we are mentioning a list. its simply because Chris natural review makes Thailand even more special and deserves a visit.
Great video Chris. Love it when I learn something new. Not sure if I will be running over to the freedom victory monument today. It not going anywhere.
Another good video, enjoying the series, thanks. I always wondered why nobody tried to take over Thailand. They used brains instead of brawn!
Thank you for the Thailand history (Victory Monument is on my bucket list). Keep it up on that wonderful journey and I hope that we meet you soon one day
Boat noodles originated from Ayutthaya.
In the past, to be able to eat boat noodles, one had to sit and wait on the river bank.
Hope you include The Chao phraya River for on off the 25

I visited the Victory Monument during the 2006 Military Coup at night when it is all lit up with lights very cool!
You ate the coconut during the recent $5 dollar challenge video :)
Just followed your great directions to the noodle soup place. I owe you big time Chris as the food was awesome. Had the small bowl of beef and the small bowl of Tom Yum. I'll be coming here again and again.
lovely!
Thailand, historically known as Siam and officially the Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand is a middle power in global affairs and a founding member of ASEAN, and ranks very high in the Human Development Index. It has the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 22nd-largest in the world by PPP. Thailand is classified as a newly industrialized economy, with manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism as leading sectors. (wikipedia)

Good on the Kiwis to make the list! I think we all know that us Yanks are going to land that #1 spot. Also, that tom yam looked magnificent. Even though I'm currently loving my time in Langkawi, I absolutely cannot wait to return to Thailand.
Thailand 🇹🇭 is my second home country. I love it their culture, people’s and of curse one of beautiful cities and yummy 🤤 Thai local food 🍲..

We just landed back in Tdot. Had an amazing time in Bangkok and great to see you and Haelee again 🇨🇦😁
Chris, you have the whole package here. Fascinating content, a cheeky presentation style, absolutely next level production, and a reference to Mel Lastman. I'm strapped in and committed to watching all 25 episodes! Heading to Samui soon, but then back to Bangkok, and I'll be more informed and ready for exploration when I get there.
Thanks for comin' along for the ride man! Enjoy Samuiland. I love that Island

As a Thai..😂😂 it’s hard to not gonna be colonized and we proud of our ancestors ability thank you fr present it
Very impressive. This is likely a huge reason as to why Thailand is such a unique country!
Yeah - go the kiwis! Love your channel, been watching from the very early days
I never learned that in my History class back in the days......sounds much more interesting than SA his history.....555, and I saw the my hotel in the video...Baiyoke Sky, been there many times on previous holidays.
Pure porky delight… I like that. Great history lesson in this video P.… Phew! that’s seven in a row. Onto the next one
ขอบคุณคริส ที่คุณค้นคว้าประวัติศาสตร์ประเทศไทยด้วย
it's my pleasure. i love Thailand and love learning more about it.
I want to add one thing. About Thailand joining Japan in WW 2. Siam was fighting the French and its navy was almost cripple. Then the British and French became allies that was one of the reasons that Siam joined Japan.
เจอคลิปนี้ตอนตี1.22 หิวก๋วยเตี๋ยวเลย😂😂😂
Awesome video and on point!
Sorry Kiwis the AUSSIES knocked you out of Cup this morning🌶️🌶️🌶️
Licking my lips at the top 25!
Thanks team 🇭🇲🇹🇭🍻🌶️🇹🇭🇭🇲
I must say this is very funny. Everybody in Bangkok would think about "Boat Noodle" when we hear the word "Victory Monument" ... not the history.. 🤣
I'll be saving every video in this series and they will be my guide on my next trip to Bangkok. The content has been amazing so far Chris, keep up the brilliant work!
today's video is the start of a real nice run.....but i should warn you.....#18 is a bit r rated!
@@RetiredWorkingForYou 🤣
Yay, Im a Kiwi. Moving to Bangkok in December
shout out all Kiwis on this one!!!
What I appreciate about this is that you actually gave recognition to the works that Thailand put in to not be colonized. Forward thinking King. Clever diplomatic maneuvers. Smart uses of various trade deals and treaties. All were the efforts put in by Thailand to make it difficult to colonized. Other "history" channel pretty much gave all the credits to the Europeans for deciding not to colonized Thailand. Like somehow it was the benevolence of the European Nations to spare Thailand.
Knowledgia 2.9M views video. KhAnubis 966K views video. They're both completely disregard Thailand's shrewd diplomacy. They concluded that it was all Europeans doing that Thailand was spared.
Also, like it or not, Thai monarchy played a massive roles in it. At the time, Thais were pretty much hold a unified cultural identity, thanks to the King. Colonization is difficult on people that unify so strongly under one identity. The main tactic of colonization is to divide and conquer, separate the people into various political groups and turn those groups against their own nation.
If you actually look into history of all the colonized nations, they ALL have this in common. A lot of infighting between groups in favor of the European empire VS nationalist. Colonization is impossible without strong local support.
I did the boat noodle thing at victory monument, but when I got to a restaurant my limited ability to speak thai failed me, so I missed out on the small bowls. Was only when I was walking back I remembered I had a thai english translator on my phone DOH!!! well maybe another go on my next visit.
Hahaha. I've been there before! Know what ya man...
Another great video Chris. Thailand is still the last country that the UK declared war against, in January 1942
Never being colonized is a true testament to the people and culture of Thailand!
i agree Rick
Thank you so much for your u tube l.m Thai who give u subscribe sir
Ohhh Chris you shoud have used a couple of more min with them Kiwis 😅 remember what country they shot "One Ring to Rule them All " 🤪 lol
oh yes.....i missed that one!
Yummy Yummy Noodles 😋
What a twist for hype of Thai Boat Noodle ! Yes ,it's always make foreigner frown for the Victory Monument but never for Thais. It's easiest place to have first experience on boat noodle but definitely not the best place. Not bad anyway.
I thought it had been, by farangs 555
👍👍👍
Mr Mel Lastman past away last year. But that phrase will live on for ever! Nobody
Nice info, still hard to know why you are filming yourself so much. BKK itself should be interesting for a tourist.
We have seen that great empires like Burma and China are easily colonized. So there's no reason to fight. Thus began to develop diplomatic relations with England, France and Russia and began a modern civilization for the country. (There is an excuse that we are a backward country)
In those days, the Kingdom of Siam was only Bangkok and other areas , they were colonies of Siam before being unified as a single country as Thailand. (fear of being occupied another colonies by Europe)
P.S. Sorry for my broken English.
Noodle in Wat Ma Kok is The best.
