Playing at the very back was pretty common early in the early access. Gradually dropped off since it’s not very good. The was a big resurgence when the tower upgrades came out with everyone trying variations of this strategy, or the asymmetric version of it since you only need to up one tower. I think the strongest this ever was involved melter with crawler production/emp and fire storms to try and make your opponent slowly walk through an entire board of flames and deal with infinite crawlers. Melters were nerfed a few times and it vanished pretty quickly.
i played againts this not long ago and going melting points with range and succ hard counters this plus it really suffers againts flanks because you can build up a big force with large chaff
Maybe he played the 4 man ffa, often someone scum camps behind their tower and will build up a huge force, often if played correct it will put them in the lead and they can beacon their stuff to the side and ignore their own shit, seems similar but not ideal when breaking big towers get easier per round

Interesting stuff! Wild strategy but I agree with your sentiment, that there might be something there - in the right circumstances.
I've done this as a weekside play. Put some storms behind weakside and level it, get a surprising amount of value out of it
p.s. you can mobile beacon to pull more units behind tower, and that way you can do and undo this strategy as required

Yeah the old fortress buildup behind the tower. That's my favorite in FFA! No where to run in 1v1 though.
