@@Rs3mocha Correct! the game is actually rather easy to find the easiest path through when it comes to the combat. However, the difficulty and challenge comes from optimizing it. For no real reason I decided to see a FFXIII speedrun knowing that even with a gestion plan or skipable cutscenes, a game as lineal as this should need at least 10 hours to be beaten, especcially because how dodging in those corridors is impossible and being underleveled makes it almost imposible go go on in many ways, but seeing a sub 5 hours, let alone the 4:29 was surprising. I think FF13 is so underated and overly hated. Even the sequel and lighting returns were pretty good to me. Seeing how it was "speedran" over time was great.
Labyrinth of Time, FF13-2. There's a full list of the music used in order linked in the description, though without timestamps it might take a bit of effort to find any particular one. :P
What about the Xbox One/Series X version of the game? You don't need to disc swap with those, and from what I've read they generally perform better than the PC version, especially on Series X. On a side-note, I love the idea that Barthandolous has put together all these grand schemes to force the heroes to get stronger, and they're just like "nah, we're strong enough thanks" XD
I'm not terribly familiar with the newer Xbox ports, but from what I've been told they are faster than the other console versions, but slower than PC, though probably with more consistent performance. I didn't mention them here because it's even more of a wasteland than 360. We have a combined leaderboard for them, but it currently houses only a single 10 hour run. Guess there's just not much overlap between Xbox owners and people wanting to speedrun 13. Honestly it's surprising even that PS3 has remained as competitive as it has. Overall the vast majority of runners have been on PC for years now, so it would have probably died off after I first got the record if not for Serena showing up and happening to prefer PS3.
As someone who absolutely hated, and I mean hated, the FF13 story. I have nonetheless managed to replay the game several times because as you say, the combat system after you figured it out is actually quite fun. It's truly unfortunate most of the game is linear, because if it had an open world system like FF12, I might've put it as one of my favorite FF games, instead of one of the worst. So it is interesting to see many people are really invested in speedruns have similar feelings about the combat.
Honestly, XIII isn't my favorite FF. But watchong this and looking at it from a speedrunning perspective, it's actually quite enjoyable watching it this way 😁
Oh my god, I can't believe it. A speedrunner who actually pronounces GameFAQs correctly! I didn't think such a thing existed! I can't even begin to tell you how good it feels to not have to hear "gameFACKKKKS".
My only experience with the PC port of FFXIII was recently as I no longer have my PS3 to play my original copy of the game. I would have never imagined the PC version was how this game was run for a while. The modern experience of trying to get that game to run is appalling on Steam. I couldn't even make it through chapter 1. Really want to replay it so hoping they do a remaster or something on PS5.
Honestly I would love to see you cover other FFs when it comes to speedrunning. Heard FF2 on Nes was completely to abuse with glitches galore back in the day. That or seeing you cover FF8 or Tactics.
First of all, I'm glad you enjoyed the video so much that you'd want more. That being said, it's very unlikely that I will make more videos. The reason this video exists is simply that I wanted it to exist, and no one else seemed likely to make it anytime soon. I'm really happy with the result. It took me about 4 months to make, not including editing, which I didn't do myself as I have no experience or interest in it. I don't really enjoy the production process, so think I could only invest this amount of energy once, for the game that I'm most passionate about. As a recommendation, DoctorSwellman makes fantastic videos about RPG speedruns, so he'll certainly make more about FF games in the future (when I announced this project, he called dibs on 13-2, for one). His video about Crystal Chronicles was a big inspiration for me while making this.
Great video, have a question tough. The Xbox 360 is the slower version on it's original hardware, but if you played the 360 version on Serie S or X wouldn't it theorically be faster than the PS3 version ?
Correct, it is the fastest version barring PC. A leaderboard for it exists, but there are barely any runs on it, so I didn't think it worth mentioning.
No, I'm not planning to. DoctorSwellman has expressed some interest in covering it though, so definitely check out his channel if you're not already familiar. He does incredible work.
People may not like ff13 but I think I played it at the right time. I was playing a bunch open world games and it was getting bland and I gave ff13 a try and was happy that it was linear. It's not not my top favorites but ff13-3 is and therefore it kinda squeezes in cuz it's part of the trilogy
hum, is it allowed for speedruns to run the PS3 version from an SSD? i currently have my PS3 slim with an SSD and my copy of FXIII ripped to the SSD to not use the disc.
That's not actually a question that has come up before. Just using an SSD normally doesn't seem to matter for FF13, since it reads everything from disc anyway, but I imagine actually installing it on there would provide an advantage. However, since this can't be done through legitimate means, I imagine it would have to be banned.
@@mrzwanzig460Welp, i think that taking into account that more and more discs will disappear, get damaged etc, playing a "legally" ripped copy should be allowed for speedrunning, noting that it should be your own legally obtained copy of the game. As I said I own my game legally, since the disc is clearly used, only "illegal" stuff i did is install an hybrid firmware on my PS3 Slim, and using one of the tools included on the firmware i copied the data on my disk to the internal SSD of the console to avoid using the disk and possibly damaging it, as far as i know that data is pure and untouched.
I've never understood the hate for this game, "linear" sure if you just stare at the map you'll get that feeling I guess. The environments are beautiful and dynamic enough to not feel boring personally and combat is always a joy, it sure feels like "auto battle" at the start but its entirely necessary to give you a grip on the combat slowly ramping it up each chapter. Internet loves to be a hivemind ig
im someone who absolutely adores this game but to be fair theres not really a whole lot to do in each area and thats where i think the whole "linear" thing stems from, for instance other entries were fairly linear as well but its rarely ever brought up as a criticism because they still had npcs, sidequests, shops etc. to fill out the worlds, as for the gameplay i completely agree, its my favorite combat system in the series for a reason
Technically, Z3R0 beat him about two months ago, and then beat his own WR twice by small amounts since. It's kind of crazy actually how there's already been 6 new PC WRs since I made the video, and they're both still trying to get it to 4:24 now. Meanwhile, the PS3 WR is still sitting exactly where it was, because Z3R0 has not touched it in years, and Kaya hasn't managed to improve it with the odd attempt here and there. I'll have to do it myself if they don't soon...
I dont understand how people keep bashing this game for its linearity yet ff7 remake gets prays left and right when its indeed even worse on that aspect. And i am talking as someone who loves BOTH .
Nah ff7 remake is no where near as linear as ff13. The fact ff7 remake has towns and npcs you can communicate with and take time away from the story is enough to prove that. It’s still a linear story experience, as is the case for any non-open world game. But that’s nothing new. Ff13 gets the reputation because it really is just walking forward for 99% of the game. Gran Pulse offers exploration, but even then it’s pretty dead exploration considering there is no towns or side quests aside from going to kill monsters everywhere. But I do believe ff13s aspects can be a good thing. Sometimes you don’t want one of those open world games with too much to do.
I always found it weird how FF13 got so much hate for its linearity and lack of minigames n stuff to do. But FF7R was praised endlessly. I am a massive FF7 fan and I think FF13 and FF15 are better games than FF7R.
I LOVE everything about the 13 trilogy. It is the last true Final Fantasy in my book. I’ll keep playing mainline final fantasies as they come out but 13 is the last that made me feel the way FINAL FANTASY can make a fan that has played every ff game feel, and that’s impossible to explain. I wish ff13 got even a fraction of the absurd level of letting it slide on flaws that ff16 is currently experiencing.
ff2 slander within the first minute, i can not believe the kind of things people think they can just get away with unpunished soon as im done having my friend softly hit me over the head for 15 hours straight you better watch it
Haha, if it helps, when I wrote this script, I hadn't actually played the game. Honestly kind of poor form. It's the one line I somewhat regret writing, because now that I have played it, it's not my bottom pick from the mainline games, so "disaster of game design" was overly harsh. Then again, I've been speedrunning FF2 PR in preparation for this year's FF series relay race, and as a speedgame it is REAL bad. :D
@@mrzwanzig460 lol that's fine, i just finished going through all the mainlines for the first time and i have a soft spot for II because of what it tried (sometimes successfully) to do, and for how much shit it gets for some reason i vibed way more with II than both of the games after it
Apparently external links are an "advanced feature", which UA-cam hasn't seen fit to bestow upon my channel, so you'll have to make do with copy pasting the URLs. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Part of the reason FF fans didn't like FF13 is because you can't just endlessly grind (due to the crystarium limits) and complain that autobattle does everything (which while true, it probably plays better than they would manually as the game actually requires skill otherwise, ask any of them how many 5 stars they got lol)
Most of the complaints for the game are borderline nitpicking,My only major complaint is the main villain's story wasn't communicated well in game. Also Final Fantasy at it's core is experimental,I prefer XIII over X
Funny you should say that. While she'll never be optimal as part of the main party, in the last month or two there has actually been a new strat development of using her specifically for the Bulwarker fight in chapter 12! Odin is really good. 😄
You're not entirely wrong. Orphan 2 specifically is vulnerable to Death, though only when staggered. But your chances of landing it are still quite bad, and even if you would land it first try every time, it isn't worth it because you would have to lead with Vanille, which is MUCH worse for the previous two fights, not to mention the sacrifices you'd have to make in the Crystarium to afford it.
UPDATE 08-07-2023: Kaya got a 4:28:42 on PC. With two (very short) deaths. So I guess he CAN keep getting away with it.

It was the most ambitious title on the platform, and square project ever.
I wish ff13 got even a fraction of the absurd level of letting it slide on flaws that ff16 is currently experiencing.
this is fucking brilliant!!! i am learning so much about this game. love game mechanics so much
God, i love this dumb game so much ❤
ff2 slander within the first minute, i can not believe the kind of things people think they can just get away with unpunished
soon as im done having my friend softly hit me over the head for 15 hours straight you better watch it
Haha, if it helps, when I wrote this script, I hadn't actually played the game.
@@mrzwanzig460 lol that's fine, i just finished going through all the mainlines for the first time and i have a soft spot for II because of what it tried (sometimes successfully) to do, and for how much shit it gets
for some reason i vibed way more with II than both of the games after it
Uhhh btw none of your links work in the description
Apparently external links are an "advanced feature", which UA-cam hasn't seen fit to bestow upon my channel, so you'll have to make do with copy pasting the URLs. Apologies for the inconvenience.
@@mrzwanzig460 gotcha YT moment lol
FYI the refresh also works if you use a full ATB bar after using the refreshed one. Can be less than 12 seconds
FIFTYFOUR!
AND A TRAP!
Same
I agree that thirteen doesn’t deserve all the hate BUT ff 10 is my favorite story line of all time
I’m playing this game
On my Xbox
It sucks you cannot play this on a ps5 or ps4
waiting for the day Lightning is used for endgame haha jk 😢
Funny you should say that. While she'll never be optimal as part of the main party, in the last month or two there has actually been a new strat development of using her specifically for the Bulwarker fight in chapter 12! Odin is really good. 😄
moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooore
is no one trying to just kill orphan with death . I believe he is killable in that way but if not mb ill shut up.
You're not entirely wrong. Orphan 2 specifically is vulnerable to Death, though only when staggered. But your chances of landing it are still quite bad, and even if you would land it first try every time, it isn't worth it because you would have to lead with Vanille, which is MUCH worse for the previous two fights, not to mention the sacrifices you'd have to make in the Crystarium to afford it.
this game is so hard
41:02 "gifted him the PC he needed" ... wat ?
