Becca Irene I don’t love packing cubes. I agree they take so much space. I only use the smaller ones for socks and underwear. That’s it. I rather fold and roll some clothes. I was able to fit my family of three on an 8 day cruise in one suitcase. I felt like I took everything I needed and not missed out on anything.😀😀

here’s the thing for me, I use the cubes to actually compress more in. Zipping the cube up partially, when you think it’s full, and adding more in... you can pack a whole lot more in a bag that way. The ability to “organize” is secondary.

I agree. I mean in terms of "right" or "wrong" there is no answer. In terms of wether you could fit more items by stuffing packing cubes as many commenters have pointed out, the answer seems to be an overwhelming "Yes, you absolutely can fit more items into your suitcase when utilizing the cubes effectively." I had the same qualms about packing cubes as you did, I thought it only made sense that they'd take up more space, but I'm glad I but the bullet & tried them anyway because I travel frequently & they have honestly been a game changer! I just went on a bachelorette trip & all the girls were fawning over how much I was able to bring in with only my small carry on, & it was all because I had utilized the packing cubes to their full potential.

Compression can and has been achieved while packing since the suitcase was invented. You can do it simply by pushing down on the suitcases flap while zipping it up. There is no product in the world that can create more space inside of a suitcase. It is finite, and packing cubes do take up more space than no packing cube.
Now, packing cubes are good for organization as the video mentions. If that is why you are using them, now power to you... But you can not convince me that they somehow create more space within the bag.

Exactly, those cubes don't even fit the suitcase you need to buy the right ones. And its pointless to put everything in cubes for a suitcase, just some of your smaller items. IMO cubes are not really that helpful for a suitcase but better for a duffel or a large backpack where stuff gets jostled around or you can't see inside the bag very well.

I use packing cubes all the time. The trick is to fill them to overflowing and then zip to compress. Also, I still fill the wheel well with misc items items and have separate bags for the shoes. I don’t feel you represented the packing cubes well enough. Maybe your prejudice hampered you packing skills on this one. I’ve gone to Europe for a month and traveled from place to place, and find the cubes very valuable. I even had room to add some bulky purchases to my bag full of packing cubes on the return trip. Let’s hear it for packing cubes! 💕

I just traveled for the first time with cubes. What I really liked about them is that I could divide shirts, pants and underwear, which makes it so much easier when you look for something. I always get my suitcase super messy when I have everything loose in it. So for organized packing these cubes are top and I didn’t feel like they where taking away space.

Without packing cubes my suitcase is a disaster in one day especially if what I need is at the bottom! I just take out the one packing cube, remove my item(s) and put back the packing cube! I can see what you were trying to show in this video - and my only guess is that you were attempting to use/show all of the pieces in the cube set that you purchased. However, part of the beauty of cubes is the compression! You didn’t fill a single cube up - 2 of them were less than half full. My love for cubes is born of my business travel. Most of my trips are 7-10 days long and I transfer locations/hotels up to 4 times per trip 🤦🏻‍♀️. Cubes allow me to pack what I need for each section of my trip allowing me to take out only what I need for that leg and leave the rest neat, organized and ready for the next stay. I get that cubes might not be everyone’s “thing” but to say that they take up more room? When used/packed properly, that is simply not accurate. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @ItsMeBriLee

It takes up more space because they are being used incorrectly. You're basically supposed to overfill the packing cube and then compress it down and zip. Therefore saving space. I'd also recommend getting smaller ones that fit the suitcase better! That should help make them work for you 😊

As someone who travels 6 months out of the year, often up to 6 to 8 weeks at a time, and never checks luggage, with correct use of packing cubes I can fit about 50% more in my carry on case.
    Tips and tricks
Use smaller cubes. I use ebags slim only. They fit the width of my cabin bag perfectly.
Pants, blazers, jackets, large sweaters packed out of cubes. Sweaters I fold so they fill up the space between the ridges for the handle. Trousers rolled and testrised into the bottom of the bag, blazers folded and layed on top.
Actually fill up each cube so that they compress to some degree. I usually pack and close, press down on them and open to add more.
Packing them this way is like just throwing stuff into the suitcase. If your utilising all space in one method but far from it in the other, of course it's not really an equal comparison.
Packing cubes are not magic and there is a learning curve to using them effectively, they also need to be appropriate for you size of case.
The shoe bags are usually not worth it. I use shoe covers or shower caps.
Makes security checks smoother and faster if they need to search your bag, they can point to the cube they want to search.

I appreciate that you gave your viewpoint in the video. It sparks good discussion😊 If you are up for it, maybe do another video comparing rolling clothes and using packing cubes except this time fill each packing cube to capacity instead of putting only 4-5 things in each and calling it full. That is not a true comparison of the 2 methods and I think that is why there have been so many comments regarding your opinion in this video.
I travel a lot for work and have gone with and without packing cubes and compression packing cubes. I have always rolled my clothes. I have found that I get more into my suitcase with the compression packing cubes with space to spare than rolling my clothes alone and traditional packing cubes. I fill the cubes up completely then zip them down. I have also used regular packing cubes like yours and they do take up more space because they do not compress down. When you use them like you did in this video, you are right, it did take up more space. But I agree with a few of the other commenters, if you had packed each cube to capacity, you would have used ~2 packing cubes and had a lot of room leftover in your suitcase. You are right, it is a preference. I know for me, compression packing cubes give me the most efficient use of space in my suitcase.

It makes living out of a suitcase much easier. It's like having drawers. Sure less fits, but at the same time you dont have to put everything into them. I'd rather bring less things with me. My cubes have to come!

I haven’t seen anyone comment this, so I’ll add to the discussion. Packing cubes are good for when you’re looking for a specific item in your suitcase after you’ve arrived at your destination. Because the items in your suitcase shift and don’t stay as neat as you packed it. Also when you’re looking for that item, you’ll sometimes have to take out whatever is on top to get to it, creating a mess. With packing cubes, you can put specific clothes in each cube and probably labeling it.
So when you’re looking for it, you can go to its designated cube and not make a mess or a big one.

I have made 18 trips to Europe ranging from 1 week to 5 weeks using packing cubes every time. Plus many trips in the US and some trips on touring Harley motorcycles. Here are my tips:
    1) Use compression cubes to squeeze out air. 2) Fill cubes full or leave space for purchases on the way or bring extra cubes. 3) Use the right size cubes: Generally I Use 1 large and 2 mediums with 2 small a for extra purchases. 4) I mostly fold my clothes flat because they compress better that way and use several dryer sheets in each cube to separate dirty clothes on the bottom from clean clothes on the top. 5) Shoes in bags in the front pockets. 6) I carry a separate backpack (most flights allow 2 items) with my meds, toiletries and electronics. Sometimes if a plane is full they let you keep 1 item which will be your backpack and make you curb check at the plane your suitcase. Also) I have a travel coat with many pockets inside and out that can carry a paperback book, wipes, Kleenex and flashlight. I also wear a scarf with zippered pockets like Shouldit that carries my phone, lip gloss, ear buds and meds. I wear a neck wallet or waist band wallet with passport, tickets, cards and cash. May sound like a lot but this system works well and leaves an open hand when strolling suitcase. And I use the dryer sheets if we need to go to the laundry. I use travel underwear and light weight clothing that I dry overnite on a travel clothesline. I hope you find these tips helpful. I think traveling well is an Art and I continue to enjoy developing my art of traveling. Safe and happy travels.

I also suggest you watch some minimalist travel and pack videos like Pack Hacker, or even others who can show you how much you can get into a packing cube/compression cube. Yes the point is to stay organized, I did what you did in this video the first time and didn’t see the need. However watching other videos for the past few weeks I know what I did wrong.

Hi Becca and fellow Becca-ites, firstly thanks Becca for trying on a different idea on for size, good for you.
Just so you know (1) I'm pro-Cubes with a week or longer trip which has multiple locations, and the (2) the largest thing cube needs to be ditched.
Let me explain, on a tour when you are packing up multiple times, the Rollers amongst us needed to either get up early each time we move (sigh) to gather up all their gear, roll and compact. Meanwhile if I want a tshirt or pair of jeans before dinner, I pull out that cube, lift out what I want, pop the others back in the cube, zip up and toss in the direction of my suitcase, the cubes stay pretty much intact. Over dinner, I get complimented on how I don't look mushed up and crinkly. After breakfast, just before we roll out, I drop my cubes in my suitcase, and off I go. So my medium sized cube is my clothing, oddly enough it's the perfect size for a folded tshirt or a pair of jeans folded into thirds. Sometimes I have two medium sized cubes. The smallest cube gets my miscellaneous stuff, and my toiletry bag is also a cube similar in size to the medium sized one. Oddly enough my cubes fit neatly into my suitcase, nice coincidence.
Some of you may not have heard of this third group, i.e. in addition to the Rollers, the Cubers - there is also the Ziplockers, i.e they roll their gear, put it into a ziplock bag, sit on it, and zip it whilst the bag is ultra-compacted. Hardcore, I know. A Ziplocking mate used to need a full HOUR to pack each time we moved, but she got a fascinating amount of stuff in that suitcase.
Thanks for the tip Becca on the carry-on bottles, I've found the GoTubbs in Australia but are having trouble finding the GoGear Silicone Travel Tubes without paying a hysterical amount in postage. Anyhoo - keep it up hon, we're taking on your advice.

I love packing cubs! However, I agree. I feel as though I can fit MORE in a carry on when my clothes are not in cubes and are evenly spread out. With that being said, I love cubes when I’m traveling with something bigger than a carry on. It is a lot easier to find items and take in and out.
Also based on all the comments, I need to check out compression bags.

If you ever do actually get the chance to travel for a month and hop around to different destinations - I would challenge you to use packing cubes! I did exactly that this summer and they 100% helped me to stay more organized. My biggest pet peeve when packing is having a lightweight top (as an example) shoved all the way at the bottom of my suitcase and having to take out layers to clothing on top to access it. Whereas with a packing cube, said top could be right at the top of my suitcase. And also, sometimes having that addition space isn’t necessarily a good thing because one may assume that because they’re able to fit more, then they will, and that could result in an overweight carryon. But, as you said, everyone has their preferences and there is no right or wrong way! Happy travels!

    • @Magic_beans_
      @Magic_beans_ 11 місяців тому

I agree, that struck me as odd. If anything organization becomes _more_ important as the trip gets longer and more complicated. Whether you prefer to unpack and repack or to live out of the suitcase, you’re doing more of that with each stop. It gets really easy for things to get left behind or shuffled around to who-knows-which pocket.

Instead of cubes I used two nylon bags similar to the kind that we stuff sleeping bags into, one for dirty laundry and one for all my underwear and socks. I understand the point of view of those who love the cubes and I celebrate how different methods work for each one of us. Your suggestions worked best for me. Thanks so much

I'm still on the fence.. just packed with compression cubes for an 8 day trip on a resort. My suitcase is so packed that I can't put any other small items. So now, I have a suitcase and a backpack for all my other items such as my tolietry bag, surface pro, camera and accessories, wipes, hand sanitizer, jewelry, meds, earplugs, purse, first aid kit... I mean literally none of this can go in my carryon suitcase with 3 packing cubes already filling the entire space. 🤦 I may have to not use the cubes and try and free up some space to stash some of these little items.. luckily I was able to put flat sandals, a hat, and my makeup case along the side of the luggage but that's it!!! I feel like I wasted alot of money trying to pack "more organized".

You have inspired me to try packing both ways next time! I have a set of cubes and one flat thingy that you store folded shirts on, from the Container Store. I love them because they organize things so well and I feel like I can fit more in my suitcase, but I haven't taken the side by side challenge. Now I just need a trip to go on! :) I do stuff my cubes way more than you are doing in this video. But, I notice that the wells on the bottom of my suitcase where the handle tracks go (similar to yours) are unused when I use the cubes. Maybe I'll try a combo approach with rolling a few items to use up the wells at the bottom and putting the rest in cubes. I also find it's nice to have the suitcase not completely full on the trip out, so you can add a few items that you get on the trip.

Those packing cubes are very thick, they should be ultra thin like the eagle creek compression ones and you barely filled them. Also, , if you have to get an item out of the ones without packing cubes you are lifting out numerous pieces of clothing to get at what you need rather than going in the right packing cube. Also, if you open up your backpack carry on and everything isnt in packing cubes it gets a jumbled mess. Disagree

The compression straps are on the top half of the suitcase, as opposed to the bottom, and without packing cubes my clothes would have tumbled out of my suitcase every time I opened it. I also thought that they helped me to be more organized. Still, to each their own.

Becca your packing cubes are larger with lots of room left. When using smaller sized ones there’s less space wasted in within the cubes so it takes up less space. I use to roll my clothes like you, but I like the cubes more by I could throw them into the hotel drawer and not have to “repack” my luggage and it kept it clean from the drawers.

I respect your opinions & glad that you've come to realize that packing cubes are helpful especially with respect to organization. Whether I'm on a 1 month trip or a weekend trip, I always use packing cubes for the following reasons:
    1. improves organization & efficiency. You can use different sizes & different colors to help organize & easily identify your contents which saves time searching for items & that saves time at your travel destinations for better things like sightseeing.
    2. I use a variety of packing cube styles & colors to help improve organization & save space. For example, I like ultra light compression cubes which can reduce the amount of space your items would normally take. I also use two sided, compression cubes to separate clean from dirty clothing or for grouping various garments.
