Bruce Bugbee Series - Adding Microbes

  • The latest episode in the Dr. Bruce Bugbee series discusses the limited effectiveness of adding beneficial microbes to enhance plant growth, highlighting that while some instances exist where microbes can help, their overall impact is often overshadowed by environmental factors. Dr. Bugbee emphasizes that environmental adjustments, such as pH modification, are more effective for promoting plant growth compared to microbial inoculation.

    About Dr. Bruce Bugbee:
Dr. Bruce Bugbee is an American scientist with a prestigious educational and research background with degrees from the University of Minnesota (Bachelor of Science), University of California, Davis (Master of Science), and Penn State University (Ph.D.). His work includes research into space farming with NASA to help develop regenerative life support systems. He and his students developed a dwarf variety of wheat that has been used in several studies on the Space Station, and he is currently working with NASA to study the use of fiber optics for growing plants in space.
After 34-years Dr, Bugbee is still located at Utah State University, where he is the Director of the Crop Physiology Laboratory. Athena is proud to be partnering with him in our pursuit of commitment; to never stop innovating. Innovation distinguishes a leader from a follower. Partnering with Dr. Bruce Bugbee at Utah State University allows Athena access to a team of research analysts running trials for various studies. Results to further develop better products and more consistent methods of cultivating the plant we all love.

In salt based hydroponics microbes aren't added to make nutrients available. Rather they are added to fight off pathogens like Pythium and Fusarium. I would like to hear Dr. Bugbee's opinion on that use case.

He already gave you the answer. Inert media + synthetic fertilizer you don't need microbes, generally speaking. Rockwoll is inert, you don't need, but of you talk about DWC is different. In DWC the media is the water and that is not as inert media at all.

@@pedronascimento837 that is not correct at all. All salt based hydroponics is considered "inert" media, whether it is rockwool, water or air. It is as opposed to soil. And the question applies to all of them.

@@MikeParentLeap They aren't and this is from personal experience. A proper nutrient mix between 1000-1100 ppm is all you need is all you need. You're more likely to create an imbalance and burn your plants. I've grown baby arms with no bloom boosters or microbes in rockwool. In my opinion, Greengene's formula of a 4-2 ratio of Jack's and 2.5 ml/gal of silica armor is all you need for flower from beginning until end. No flush. I wouldn't use silica if you don't thoroughly clean your lines out between grows, as it will build up biofilm. The Athena formula is just as good, but they are a little expensive for my budget. Everything is ROI in this game. I'm speaking from 25 years of experience. I've used recharge, mammoth P, Tribus, TPS Billions, great white, all with unsulfured molasses. If there was a difference, I couldn't tell. Like I said ROI, microbes are super expensive with no noticeable change.

i add them twice in the cycle, 8 bacteria and 8 fungi. i also manipulate the ph when i do this. Rootzone explosion and fast bud formation, with phosphorus negatively charged at negative 3. i also do a week 5 organic boost plus organic growth stimulators for some biomass and cell expansion with 4 bacteria and 4 fungi strains as i begin my fade early. This is where i also disagree with adding sugars , but they must be complex to enlarge the stems and caps. I love manipulating the size of the caps :) with some stress and ph manipulation during week 6. week 7 is where i love athena bloom then finish with chelates sulfur uptake and mag to supercharge the manipulated fade.mid week 8 is a leech down to 50 ppm and dryback at 40%, then its purified water for 7to 10 days. He is missing key points to soil biology, microbes are there even if you don't apply. Breakdown of any matter happens cause either oxidation or consumed by something. When you have a bag of so called sterile media and apply a species to host that material that has correlation to nutrient uptake for several plant species, I'd see it as beneficial. Also the plant naturaly builds a connection with anything that has energy like a power supply. This is why when you hold voltmeter when barefoot you get reading the life happening in soil is putting off that much energy metabalizing whatever. So the benefit I see is healthier more vibrant plants along with variable stresses that improve flowers quality. Soil will always win but in comercial the one with more control stands out so coco will be more efficient and that's why our food is trash now to.
