Results to further develop better products and more consistent methods of cultivating the plant we all love.
You can really go down the rabbit hole with growing techniques & nutrients etc. but if you get to the point that you can make tiny little enhancements to gain yield or quality, you are a pro!!!!
Finally some science. Thank you!
Most arguments i personally have heard about flushing aren´t about yield or higher thc/cbd though. The main argument i have heard are both to start the breakdown process of chlorophyll and draining the leafes of sugar/nutrients for a smoother and tastier smoke experience.
Is there any studies regarding that?
Awesome explanation.
this is awesome! i was just in my tent asking myself if flushing is good or not, thanks!
its very easy to follow you Dr. Bugbee . Thank you very much for your work
Great content. Please consider lowering the volume of the background music. Thank you.
in spinach flushing is done to reduce nitrate content and improve the flavour i was once told by my horticulture professor would be interesting to look into that
Dr. Bruce is the man. I can listen to this man for hours and I have. If I could pick his brain for 30 minutes, it would be invaluable.
Not really, way to scientific, am I flushing or not? All I wanted to know
@@2tearsinabucket521 I thought the same thing when I started watching his videos 3 years ago. When you watch the lectures over and over again it starts to make sense. My cultivation techniques have improved 3 fold and it shows in my plants.
@2tearsinabucket521 dont be ignorant, nothing he says is too scientific for a reasonably intelligent person. To answer your question, don't flush, just feed your plants the appropriate amount of nutrienta
True, i have never flushed !!
Damn your toilet must be overflowing!
@@BJahoda 🤣🤣🤣😂👍
Haaaaa😂
At my job, we have a commercial grow that we flush for one week at week 8-9. I don’t know why really but we not only cut nitrogen in the last weeks but we also use Fade by Athena to further help “flush” out the nitrogen. But completely cutting nitrogen should be enough? My plants at home feel dense but idk about yield on my lower branches
Thanks Bruce
Pro's stopped flushing ten years ago. We never flushed florida outdoor, and it was heavenly good and people would buy it wet still... what would i know eh
That was always my thought as in organics flushing doesn't happen because it's not really possible. I find indoor with synthetics I don't flush but I reduce the feedings over the last few weeks so when I come to the end my run off ppms are around 100 or so. But back to outdoor you can't even do that.
its called scoience
@@jeah_dude Senescence

Flushing is more of a hydro thing. You can flush organic soil unless you are using synthetic fertilizer.
Barely use any Nitrogen in flower anyways.
In organic i top dress week 4-5 for the last time that gives you 3 to 4 weeks for the fertalizer to be used up and plant fades naturally.
Plants will go through senecence with hydro too, but hydro growers typically chop their plants down to soon. And they typically over feed too which isn't beneficial in anyway
So can he define what a “high nutrient level” or “excess nutrients” is when considering to flush or not to flush?
Above 10 ec during stretch is too high, and above 4ec during bulk, but some would say 6ec is the sweet spot for bulk
No
EC value
Hmm?
If you measure plant sap its ec is inline with the nutrient you're giving them, if you give them water there's no ec in the plants vascular system.
Is there anyway to remove any heavy metals absorbed by the plant? Cannabis is reported to be a strong bioaccumulater of these elements.
Love me heavy metal though
Don't add them in the first place...
@@zkilla4611 Hard to do with "organic" growing hahaha. There is more heavy metals in average soil than in high quality hydroponic fertilizers + osmotic water. :DD
Thank you for the fantastic videos! Your work is greatly appreciated! Thank You!!!
What, if the medium is completely organic and has no big amounts of minerals inside?
Thank you Athena, i was in your workshop in Phuket- Thailand,
funny how the cleanse is the same as the drip clean from the old house and garden line up. Now you got the fade with the cleanse, takes the master out of the master grower, but ill compare my ash and taste vs yours any day. 30 years you get to learn a thing or 2 in the sweat and cure, leech and reintroduce for a slow fade.
your clients are drying in 12 , trimming in 2 and curing in 10 days and out the door as top shelf lol this is why we wont give out our old 87 skunks, you guys dont deserve it. You will not get the taste of a properly done, 0 spray, 0 bug 0 fungi environment, uv filtration merv 13 systems everywhere , intakes and recirc. Not quite masters yet are we lol super chronic perfect weed sells for $1800 plus an ounce, good look running a 500 like me without spraying. Your master growers are from 2012 and in van we where taught by masters from holland in 87. Big corps will never have the taste, terp, thc combo of a real master grower with his own genetics dating back to 87. gelatos, skittles ogs are all you guys got, a far cry from super chronic. 10 seeds 10 phenos lol stabilize much anyone, then hunt for a real pheno ? but ya lets pump sulfur and mag in the fade and chilates to grab that nitrogen, that will make us master growers lmfao
@@hektoriuz what are you trying to say?
@@NightlifeReALIty that he knows a lot of bro science.
So this only applies to soil like mediums...
Which all these studies were also made within a DWC area
the evidence is very small since nitrogen accumulation within the plant is a major factor which is not considered. usually you won't see any change in leave tissue by removing nitrogen from your feeding chart for 1 week. there are studies showing the effect of nitrogen on cannabinoids as well as yield, but they run tests with different nitrogen supplies over the whole cultivation period. i would say this study (whoever it id) is to be read very critical.
It seems to me you have have missunderstood something here.
Of course nitrogen accumulation withing the plant are considered. The whole point of flushing are to starve the plant of nutrition from the medium so it use the accumulation within the plant instead.
"by removing nitrogen from your feeding chart for 1 week" The chart clearly showed 1week was significantly less effective then 2weeks, meaning 2weeks are the way to go if you do it. So for you to argue the 1week are kinda pointless.
@@Johan-z4y i guess this idea lead to the wrong conclusions. when you flush to starve a plant, thr plant starts at a certsin point to translocate nitrogen from the sugar leaves to the buds. "fading" thus does not mean that we have a different accumulation of nutrients in the buds. i think "flushing", especially removing nitrogen stimulates secondary metsbolism since the assimilation of nitrogen in the plant is very energy intensive. nitrogen uptake is not very sensitive. if we provide nitrogen the plant takes it quite good, leading to a decrease in brix levels. low brix levels result in bad end product. i wan't critize anybody here, my point i believe we see improvements due to higher energy availability for secondary metabolism rather than the idea that fading equals a more desirable profile of nutrients within buds leading to higher quality. have a nice day mate
I have buds growing slow
What should i do?

Flushing never made sense to me and I love how bro science is finally being killed off
How have you got that flushing is bro science lol? He just says it's required for salt nutrients. He calls a precision flushing. Did we not watch the same vidoe lol? This man just explained to you how over fertilization needs to be flushed what am I missing lol 😅
What he saying is, if you're following the nutrient company's regiment, they will precision Flush the nutrients with the tapering off as you follow the programs. But I know salt growers are using bloom boosters which is why most should still flush man. Correct me if I'm wrong please
@@justins712 I don't know, he pretty much summed it up at 01:00. Seems no need if you don't over feed them, which people shouldn't be doing to begin with
@fringestream990 You are correct, but most new growers overfeed their ladies. They will overlove them most of the time, adding too many bottled nutrients, thinking it's going to help when it doesn't. Do you know how to fix a lockout using salts? You flush it. I think this is why most need to watch to the end of the video to understand what he's saying better. Because he calls it precision flushing actually when we are tapering off nutrients and feeding less toward harvest. It's not that flushing isn't necessary; it's that nutrient programs already do it for you. By following their programs, you are tapering off the nutrients by using less nitrogen in your bloom feed. Just buy using water only towards harvest is a form of flushing. It's diluting the nutrients solution that's in the soil/medium. That's tapering off nutrients/flushing to help ripen the plant flowers towards harvest. You feed still micros and others nutes but less of them overall which is tapering nutes. Which is a form of precision flushing
@fringestream990 You're assuming new growers have any idea what their doing. Most just slap a seed in soil and never understand how it all works. Which will lead to them overfeeding 9/10 times
Good video. Audio needs re balanced the music is louder than Bruce. Annoying.
The background music is super annoying. Flushing is also forced senescence. It will make a 10-week plant finish in 8 or 9 weeks because it is being starved. Ambers and fade and everything - it's just making the plant follow your schedule instead of expressing it's full potential.
That's why he emphasized it's only necessary when excessive ferts are used. If it's not excessive, there's no need. If your plants starve in flush, they weren't storing as much nutes as they could have been, meaning your ferts probably weren't excessive.
@@sinn0304 Except for the act that flushing does nothing for "nutes in the plant". What is there is there, part of the celular structure - you ain't flushing it out. You can rinse out your inert medium for the next run with the plants to help you do it - that's all. It is a production model for commercial growers that dumb-ass home growers tried to replicate. But it's also why commercial weed sucks compared to organic homegrown.
You're not forcing senescence, I use to think the same think but it's just malnutrition. Chlorophyll only as a 2 day half life, if your cutting N there's really no need. I do run High EC the entire time until I switch to fade so I only do a 1-2 fert restriction.
@@rustynails5462 The idea is that nutrients are not only needed "statically" but have dynamic roles in certain processes within the plant. Thus, taking them away will reduce them within the plant insofar as that they are metabolized in certain functions. As an example, nitrogen is bromen down by glutamate synthase and similar enzymes into compounds such as precursors. and actual amino acids, such as Arginine or Glutamate. So when you flush, the processes keep on going and thus "Reduce" nitrogen within the plant, considering it is used for the synthesis of different compounds.
@@BudOnTheLeaves you don't get it - "until I switch to fade" is senescence. Growers planning when a plant finishes does make it finish. It just isn't when the plants would be ripe on their own. It is FORCED by the grower by their feeding schedule.
You don't get that in living soil where the grower isn't controlling the intraveinous feeding of chelated minerals. Plants flower 1-2 weeks longer on average. Because the plants want to grow and plump and fade on their own schedule. And generally plants from the same pack of seeds finish at different times.
Feed right and you won't have to flush for days from what I've seen.
Three quarters of a year ago he still claimed that the best thing you can do is to give nutrients until the end of the growing cycle, so that the plant can use them and grow , bigger ?!. I'll just say now ..
¡✨️Quality before quantity✨️!
No need to flush when using living soil. Plants will do it on their own when left to the microbiology and the plants intelligence.
Absolutely most of my plants start changing colors around week 5 or 6 and by week 8 or 9 the plant is red, blue, purple etc... the plant knows what to do. Can't speak for synthetics tho
@@smurfigeeCoco synthetics. Just feed water last 3-7 days. No need to actually flush. As long as you stick with your normal runoff
It doesn't work that way. Plants don't take whatever they want. You can overfeed in organics. Never saw toxicity in plants in the wild? hahaha
T.A. FinalPart + T.A. FlashClean offers what he is talking about.
It's interesting because nitrogen increases chlorophyll. And high chlorophyll leaf metabolism is associated with THC production.
I would guess late in bloom the plants are already so chlorophyll filled, so the stress boost from nutrition/nitrogen starvation outweights the chlorophyll production.
If my guess are correct. What i would be interested to know are if you can use smaller/shorter nutrition/nitrogen starvation and stress bursts mid bloom to boost yield.
I would argue that the plant spikes in cannabinoid production, only because it is forced to metabolize stored chlorophyll. With only a 50% chance of achieving an increase. Would be interesting to see if a large increase in nitrogen at late bloom has cannabinoid correlations. On Flushing plants are sponges, capillary action with red food dye can turn a plant red. So flushing does affect plant tissue.
Common sense really, just don't bombard your plants with high rates of nitrogen, use a soluble inorganic fertiliser high in nitrogen for vegetative then fade for a couple of weeks when flowering starts then hit with a soluble inorganic fertiliser low in nitrogen (flowering fertiliser) and then fade out to the final month, I've found that plants hate too much fertiliser and it also helps to randomly not fertilise for week here and there hence flushing is a total waste of time all in all less is more so to speak.
I hand water Coco coir with water everyday fertilizer once a week
Fertilizer every feeding. Except last week. Just water and Cal-mag of course.
But that’s only 2 studies. But I agree the evidence is there to do more research
From my experience, if you use the correct amount/type of fertilizer throughout the grow, a flush is not worth the effort and risk.
I guess i can,i got two tents full of yellow and purple plnts
I'm thinking that this study didn't include burning the buds to see if the nutrient concentration causes popping and/or black ash. But, on the plant health side this is great to know. Thanks Bruce.
Popping ash? How many micro seeds do you smoke? And why?
@@MrEiht 😂 Smoking seed doesn't bother me cause ya gotta do what ya gotta do. But, I was referring to the fact flushing was intended for a smoother smoke originally. And, ya it was to remove a build up of nutrients in the flower according to Broscientists. Sensi or not.
@roahe no. I was asking what causes you ash to pop. Because that is what you wrote. So when you reply to "What causes your ash to pop?" with: "Flushing makes smoother smoke!" we won't get far.
@@MrEiht I'm sorry for the confusion ?
@@roahe no worries, blaze a big one and enlighten and un-confuse yourself :)
Great point about the slightly stronger but very low THC.
Ive just grown a CBD hemp plant in the UK (rainbowberry)
but it smells alot stronger than the 0.3% thc, plant the seed came from.
Is it possible to increase the THC production in industrial hemp with just nutrients ?
And if so what ???
THC doesn't smell. You can't estimate the levels of cannabinoids via smell.
You're smelling terpenes. These do not differ from CBD to THC strains and do not correlate with potency. There are many different terps and many have medicinal value.
To answer your question, yes and no (in your case). You won't be able to get a CBD plant to produce fullon THC, but you should be able to raise it within the limits of the strain. You won't get high from it though.
You cannot smell THC. You're smelling the terpenes
Smells and flavors comes from terpenes not THC bro
@@benfarm420 third time's the charm i guess
When the trichomes turn Amber you are losing THC... 😉 Harvest early.
THC is probably the worst metric in the cannabis industry.
All the Bugbee video are very interesting but the music are too loud and very not necessary and i don,t think Mr Bugbee give the university cours whit music,,it,s like somebody talk at the same time of him,,very annoying
Music is annoying. We can open another tab and play music if we wanted too while listening!
I think it has more to do with salt content in plant material. When flushed properly weed becomes almost flammable.
Well....i guess this study will have to be redone.....when they can trial out high thc plants....it really doesnt make sense to flush plants that will be made into rope....
30 years ago the farmers in a very specific place in Sicily "flushed" each plant with a bottle of whiskey. Which turned their weed into DEVILS weed, and they charged a bit more. Whiskey or not, you WOULD want to have that.
Kills the plant, nearly killed a apple tree with alsohol.
@@marcus268 well no. Next flushing time I bought a bottle whiskey and put it in my 120L hydroponic tank. Not much happened, it lowered the EC a bit. But no dead.
@@MrEiht Because that is very diluted. 40% from 1 l becomes less then a percent in 120l. Try dropping a bottle directly on a soilbed, different effect.
@FrankTaeger2021 yes, no? I did not "instantly" kill them, just adding something new, fresh, different. As you can imagine, it had zero effect. But directly whiskey-ing them might do something obvious...like death the next day :)

How plants work is great information but I dont care about theory. Athena has a license to grow. We need to know about THC because thats the bottom line at the dispensary. I dont care why wholesalers pay this much 18% and they pay this much for 28% we also test for terps ok we need to know what works not the theory of what works. I just a watched a video of 48 hours of dark or 48s light before harvest I dont care about theory. Which one works? You have to test it and have results just theory is just bro. I have alot of bros. Theres a theory you only need PAR light because thats all that affects photosynthesis an entire industry designs and builds lights for PAR light and ignores the other spectrums and the entire industry is wrong. Theyve been wrong for a long time and I can prove it. I used Athena fade to reduce nitrogen and it apparently works and gave a nice finish. Again I dont care about theory when I want the answer. I love theory but I dont care about it. I appreciate it says Dr by your name but you should know not to give advice like that and you keep steering me into ambiguous information. Ive already considered what I should I do and why. Ive even considered the theory. Theories end up being wrong all the time even when they make the most sense. If you havent taken and got it tested and its repeatable you dont know and that is all Ive heard from you, in 5 videos all Ive heard is what you dont know and that is a fact. Im sure you know your shit but you spread it too. Those are bullshit cultivars that nobody is ever gonna grow and its jackshit information for us its some evidence and thats fine if I was in school I am not in school Im in sink or swim live or die. We all are. Grow some real weed flush it and have it tested by that asshole up the street then we'll know.
ayyy
I know a guy who grows huge beautiful plants with miracle grow...it tast like pure shit ...ill keep using pure water the last week...😅
If God ever see this,he will be hella proud
When a human tell ,ok guys i have undersrand it , then shiva laught😂😂😂😂😂 coz he keep under his right feet the ignorance ......
Medicinal plants should be grown in a rich living soil to get the most out of them. i.e. terpenes! These toxic chemicals should never be used on our precious plants and soil. Grow better plants, better for the earth, better for us, and it cost nothing. Ain't about yields it's about terps.
please consider removing the background music as it does not have any meeaningful value
Since the earth is flat you shouldn't flush your plants. Everyone in chat grows fire top shelf.🦆💨
Flushing is a hoax, real growers know this. It all comes down to strain & pheno.
