Does The Porsche 996 GT2 really want to kill you? Direct Comparison with the 996.2 GT3

- I finally get the chance to drive the infamous Porsche 996 GT2.
It feels like the final stepping stone of my 996 journey.
The first 996 I drove was the 996 Turbo S cab. Then I owned a 996.2 C2 which later I upgraded for a GT3.
Prior to driving this car I was immensely intimated by its nickname, the Widow Maker. But as you'll see in this video, there is more to this car than the name implies.
In this video, I start off by driving the GT3 around Thailand Circuit Track to use it as a benchmark, and then I hop directly onto the GT2 for comparison.
00:00 Intro
00:46 Brief explanation of this video
01:22 Explaining how the GT3 drives
07:30 Pitting the GT3 and walking around
08:40 Getting onto the GT2 and driving analysis
15:11 Gathering my thoughts and conclusion about 996 GT cars
Disclaimer: This is my first time at this track. I am not a professional driver, just a driving enthusiast enjoying cars I like. It was filmed on an extremely hot day (38C) and I had been driving for several hours before making the video. I was very tired and very dehydrated at that point, but I tried to convey my emotions as best as I could while driving these cars. - Авто та транспорт
Finally a decent review that the 996 generation GT3/GT2's deserve. Most reviewers I've seen have no idea how to work with these cars. They get in for 30 minutes on the street and trying to understand the cars while they review it. I own both a 997.2 GT3 and a 996.2 GT3 and to me the 996.2 is my favorite, and not by a small margin. Whoever can get their hands on a stock-ish 996.3 GT3 should buy it. Most out there have been ruined by too many unwanted mods.
What is the reason you prefer the 996.2 over the 997.2?
Btw have you tried the 996.1 gt3?
As a 996.2 GT3 driver I totally agree. This thing is perfect for twisty mountain roads in Switzerland.
And yes modern cars may be faster, but I doubt they can give you nearly as much driving pleasure
you're lucky to own such a great car in such a beautiful country with beautiful roads!
You've just helped me to make up my mind for my next purchase...GT2 it is 🎉
Great comparisons. Most of the other reviews talk about the extent of differences in how they behave so it was interesting to hear that for you it was gt3 + grunt 👍
thanks!
actually I recently learnt that the 996 GT2 out of the box was set up to be quite understeer, because the guys at Stuttgart were scared that people will lose control of the car too easily. But since all the GT cars had fully adjustable suspension, they can be set up to be quite neutral and tail happy like the car I drove in this video.
Excellent review! Thanks a lot, I hope to see more of these types of video's from you.
Love your review. I own a modded 996 turbo with exhaust and tune, manual, with ohlins suspension. It’s soo powerful and planted. Best mods ever done on a car. Still I would love to try a gt3, for the lighter front end etc. But I feel safer driving on streets with 4wd and the pcm on. 😂 my dream garage would see a gt3 next to the turbo.
Thanks!
I've driven the GT3, Turbo S and GT2 on the same day.
And one thing that really separates the GT cars and the Turbo S is the feel of the weight.
The Turbo S even though hugely impressive, feels quite cumbersome in terms of body control. The front end of the Turbo S compared to the GT cars is another story. If you ever have the chance, you must try it!
Think of it like listening to hi-fi sound systems. Once you hear a nice sound system, there is no going back! lol.
Good luck with acquiring your dream garage!
@@FizzyMotors thanks for your feedback! As soon as the weather is better here in Switzerland, I will try a GT3. What about you? What will your next car be? Will you keep the GT3? BTW, yours is beautiful with those options! 😄
not really shopping for another car yet. I really think the 996 GT3 is the perfect car for me. Although I am very curious about the 997 GT3.
@@FizzyMotors I’m also curious of the 997. If you can try one, please make a video. 💪🏼
If I get the chance, will definitely try to share the experience on my channel
Nice comparison man
i have a 996 turbo with kw suspension, soul exhaust, numeric shifter and cables, etc, a lot of time and money spent just to get it to how i want it but always missing that feeling of a track car. I have been seriously thinking converting it to a rwd like the GT2... Your video just firms up my mind to do it man, brilliantly shot and reviewed!!! waiting for more!!!!
Oh boy
Once you drove the GT2 and jump back into the Turbo, the turbo will feel clumsy and over burdened. I say that from experience, please dont take offense.
Thanks for the kind words
@@FizzyMotors Since the price of both GT2 and GT3 rised alot there is always a possibility to modify a turbo to be very close to a GT2. It already shares alot, and with a complete 4wd delete, lighter seats, installation of a lsd, engine mounts, gt2 clutch conversion, improved suspension and anti roll bars I belive it will be pretty "up there" with a good wheel alignment. The 996 turbo also came with vastly diffrent versions of the suspension by the way. The US-version were 20mm higher than the ROW, and then there was a sport suspension package that was 10mm lower than the ROW. I owned a 996 turbo for almost 15 years, and my only regret was not buying that GT2 I looked at that was 15000 euro more expensive 🙄
@@divadtsorf i have driven two 996 turbos
And they feel like a very different car to the GT2. Im sure what youre saying is correct, but itll take a lot of work.
00:51 realized I used the picture for the track.... oops
7:33 two of the best drivers cars in the planet on the left obviously
I really enjoyed your videos on the 996.2 GT3, thanks for uploading. I may have missed it, but is your 996.2 GT3 modded?
thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed them.
About the mods...I may have talked about it in my full review, but maybe not so clearly.
The car has aftermarket: shifter, clutch, and suspension (online DFV).
Unfortunately, I do know what brand of clutch and shifter is used, but I know for sure it is not stock, because I have compared it to another 996.2 GT3 before. I prefer the feel of my car though, so hats off to the previous owner who decided to do the mods.
"The first 996 I drove was the 996 Turbo S cab", hah nice, I currently own a 996 turbo S cab in basalt black. It was imported from japan a year ago.
nice! I still remember driving it for the first time. it was my first ever experience in driving a Porsche. my first experience driving a supercar too.
there's a video of it on my channel if you're interested, but it's not that great...
I own 996.2 GT3CS and I am about to get 996 GT2CS as well. Would you shed some light if that makes sense for you since you directly compared both - or are they too similar (not in terms of power obviously) to keep both ?
I think it depends on how much you like the 996 and what is your use case for both the cars.
For me, I would want to venture into 997 territory. Maybe a 997.2 GT3RS and a 996 GT2 would be the perfect pairing.
The 997 is more refined and grown up than the 996s btw. You’ll lose some rawness but you’ll gain lots of competence
I don't know why you guys already don't have a least half million subscribers and and views per video
UA-cam works in mysterious ways. Please share to your friends if you like the videos. Thanks!
What watch do you have on? Looks nice
Omega Speedmaster Reduced Schumacher edition. They were sold in the 90s in a few colors and variations
bro review the gt4rs please
I will
You were getting angels on every corner is that cause the tyres were cold or just wrong tyres??
Lol
Its a combination of reasons
For the gt3 - new ps4 tires but were slightly over inflated
For the gt2 - the tires are 6 years old
But also because i was provoking oversteer on purpose by being naughty with the throttle pedal and steering angle
If you think your in control in a car like that
Your kidding yourself it will not you !!
you probably never driven one
