    996 is a break through of 911 series with a brand new concept without the absence of 911 DNA (revolutionary evolving). It was born with braveness, forward looking, innovation and carrying the mission of saving Porsche. It takes all successors to another level. Don't understand why some people are so mean with it. However, thanks to their tons of negative comments imposed to 996 and people with a budget (like myself) can have a chance to experience 911 more easily.

    Great review of an exceptionally rare 996 variant. Love the looks of this car and it seems funny to think that once upon a time 450 plus horsepower was just huge! IMO so much more interesting than todays over weight and overpowered super cars.

    I just love these cars. Perfect size and one of the best looking rear ends. Its funny how people comment on the 996 GT2 headlights, but the GT1 had almost the same. Brilliant review on a car I reckon will be an entry 200k buy in looking ahead.

    I remember doing a track day at Bedford Autodrome in my 996GT3 about 15 years ago with an assortment of 996/997GT3/GT3 RS's and one guy in a 996GT2. Most of the GT3's had been set up for track work, some had expensive non OEM dampers and were driven by guys who could really drive. The fella in the stock GT2 was confident his car was quicker but ended up spinning across some grass and crashed into the fence outside the pit lane destroying a stop /go light in the process. He got lucky as his car looked largely undamaged apart from a few stone chips on the rear of the car. I think they're great cars but the factory suspension settings weren't the best. Also don't sound great stock so need an aftermarket exhaust.

    The only thing that makes the 996 GT2 fall apart for me (and this is my dumb logic) is that the 996 Turbo is the last AWD turbo 911 you can RWD swap, the 997 has more complicated electronics that don't allow you to do that from the limited research I'd done. With that in mind, you can make a 996 GT2 out of a turbo for a lot less than what the entry price for a GT2 is, if you'd wanna. As a collectors item, can't fault it. Surely definitely underrated...and man is the GT2 the absolute coolest. One of the best looking 911s ever.
    Doesn't sound bad for a turbo car either, nice rasp to it!

    • @seshelbow336
      @seshelbow336 9 місяців тому

      Another advantage of going the converted Turbo route is you maintain the PSM. Now I know it’s macho to say you don’t want any electronic aides, but if you’re ever in a position where you need to get somewhere in a rush and it’s raining, the PSM could save your pride and joy. An Awd standard Turbo will try to send the back end out at surprisingly low throttle inputs on very slight bends. And when it’s dry and you want to be a hero you can turn PSM off, and it will act just like a non PSM car until it all goes wrong, but once you are going sideways, as soon as you tap the brakes, the PSM will kick in regardless and save you from yourself. As a long time hater of the 996 headlights I now think the 996 GT2 is possibly the prettiest water cooled Porsche of all time.

    One thing people unknowingly state is a GT2 engine (or X50 package 996TT) is essentially the same with larger turbos. Not entirely true. GT2’s & X50 package cars came with K24 (instead of K16) turbochargers, larger intercoolers, different ECU tuning AND (biggest difference) a different oil pump with additional scavenge stage (same as GT3)….

    • @antonyweisstock7167

      ...and 996 turbo S!....which also has the standard ceramic brakes like the gt2 (and the x50)...and I can scare the shoes off of my 2 kids riding in the back seat :)

    • @antonyweisstock7167
      @antonyweisstock7167 2 роки тому +1

      Oh...and the awd system makes up for a lot of non-pro driver errors that otherwise be made, scaring the shoes off of those aforementioned who will push these machines...

    • @seshelbow336
      @seshelbow336 9 місяців тому

      @@antonyweisstock7167to be fair the awd system may aswell be RWD in slippery conditions. It’s the PSM that makes the Turbo so foolproof……unlike an EVO or Subaru that drive like a FWD with more grip, 996 T drives like a RWD car with a tiny bit of extra front end trying to pull you straight.

    Looking to get a 996 quite soon, upgrading from a low mileage powerflex bushed 986. I've driven two 4wd 996's.( 4 and 4s) and was not impressed. Didn't seem to have the sharp boxster handling and steering feedback. . Does a 2wd 996 feel different to a 4wd on normal dry roads. It could have just been both needed new bushes.

    I built a GT2 from a 2002 911 Turbo with UMW/turbos/Tune 650hp 6sp along with Porsche factory GT3 suspension / steel brakes, GT2 clutch eliminating the accumulator, great build for me but I still dislike the headlights...interior was updated with black Nappa leather Recaros and SpineyBeck leather weave that Singer uses. I'll will keep my air cooled Pcars, sorry guys but the 996 style is the Ferrari Dino for Porsche. The 997 was the fix to the 996. Great work again Lee.

    The ceramic Brakes are not the best option, they where the first and had diffrent problems, one of them was brake outs, so llittel bits broke away, it wasen´t that big of a security problem but to get new ones u had too pay I think 15.000euro and steel brakes whit wreally good pads have the same perfomance, for a very much lower cost.
