This made me think of how I would categorize my relationship with my garden and my land. I think over all it is parent and child. A young child for the veg garden- give it what it needs, love, attention, nutrients, direction, and closely monitor for problems to try and decide if I need to intervene or not. For the food forest and orchard areas, more like a teenager. Give it structure, space to evolve, nutrition, protection, but acceptance of what it chooses to become. The wilder, zone 4 and 5 areas are like an adult child- enjoy them, help when needed, but mostly let them do what they like.

Been slowly turning my front yard into a forest type situation with the plants i love, and lots of native flowers that i pick n choose, with this design in mind, never have i ever used any hard pesticides in my gardens even before i started to learn other ways of growing plants, it just never felt right in my heart to be doing that, and to me , it just happens, some years are better than others, for example, we have had a very rainy humid hot summer so far and my evans bali cherry and stanley plum had set fruit but the fruits just rotted , and i just let it be, i don't know if its something i have done or if its weather, i am going with weather. i try very hard to not let my ocd and slight perfectionist side get the best of me when doing all this.

I’ll also add that I belong to a lot of different garden groups- some permaculture and some more traditional and the amount of people that have a leaf or plant with some bug bites on it, or some ants in the garden bed and people freaking out and asking what can they spray to kill the bugs and then coming back later and asking why their plants aren’t getting pollinated and why they don’t have any bees is just mind blowing.

As someone who has taken a PDC course, you are spot on. It genuinely surprised me how many people in my class had a hard time shaking off preconceived notions of what permaculture is and what it offers.
Of those who struggled with it, it seemed like they believed it was some magical cure-all for every issue they had or idea they wanted to pursue. In their designs I'd notice they tended to want to do immediate extreme changes to their soils/land, and would push back on the concepts of working with what is and changes over time. It really made me wonder who they were watching/reading that formed these beliefs in them. They tended also to be the same people with an oddly selfish mindset as well, as in were in it to only help themselves/their family (not caring or thinking about their neighbors or community) and/or saw it as a fast and easy way to make a lot of money... somehow lol
I'm grateful that I was lucky enough to have a good teacher grounded in reality, and can only hope that eventually what she was trying to show them will click at some point. 😅

As I was nodding along I made a connection to parenting. I consider myself an informally trained Maria Montessori nerd, and she talks about setting our ego aside. That it is not us whose in control of creating our children, they have it hidden inside themselves to become who they are. Our job is to sit in awe and observation as we work on ourselves and the environment around the child. "I'm a participant in the garden" just as I'm a participant in my childs life and the community i interact with.

I feel doubtful of the studies you mention about, Angela. I feel that they might be biased by comparison to the wrong thing (which is 1 of most common fallacies associated with research publications and articles).
Humans who manage land wisely of course will be contributivd to biodiversity.. but only compared to humans who aren't, don't you agree , Angela ?
