Karbala is a city in central Iraq, roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Baghdad. Karbala is the capital of the Karbala Governorate and has a population of approximately 700,000 people.
The city, well known as the site of the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, as well as the shrines of Imam Husain and Maulana Abbas, is regarded a holy city for Shi'ite Muslims, along with Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. Tens of millions of Shi'ite Muslims visit the site twice a year, making it a pilgrimage destination on par with Mecca.
Millions of Shi'ites commemorate Imam Husain ibn Ali's martyrdom every year. Up to 8 million pilgrims visit the city to mark Ashura (the tenth day of Muharram), the anniversary of Imam Husain's martyrdom, but the biggest event is the Arbaaín (the 40th day following 'Ashura,' where up to 30 million visit the tombs. The majority of pilgrims walk from all around Iraq and more than 56 nations.
Karbala, like Najaf, is a popular tourist destination for Shia Muslims and the city's tourism business. Maulana Abbas A.S Mosque and Imam Husain Shrine are two religious tourism destinations.
